First question, then: What are crowds like in early August?

Crowded!

Summer is very crowded, and you can definitely feel that in DL because it's small.

My best advice that I tell everyone: Always get there when the park opens. DL is empty for the first 2-3 hours. This is usually the only time I go in the summer because I am able to walk on everything. I also load up on fast passes that I use later on in the day (I leave in the afternoon when the crowds come, then come back at night and use the fast passes). Fast pass is your friend.
