We're 2 days out from our 10 night stay and our 15 year old daughter just came home from basketball practice with a sprained ankle.

Hardball size swelling on the rightside of her right foot.

A day in the life.......

been there done that...my daughter is a competitive cheerleader and has had so many sprained ankles from all the tumbling i can't even count. she had a grade 2-3 sprain of her right atf ligaments about a week before our christmas trip in 2008. she wore her brace, took her ibuprofen, and elevated/iced as needed. we did a wheelchair for her to use as needed just because of all the long time on our feet, she wouldn't have needed it for just at home kind of stuff and didn't want to drag the crutches through the park. it brought me back to the days of pushing a stroller lol...just a tad bit heavier.

Wheelchair rental! She'll get exercise for her arms, and be off her feet. Also, you could probably get her one of those gel wrap packs for her to put around it. She should be fine as long as she doesn't put too much weight on it.

I dif recommend the wheelchair as well. Though I just wanted to say that's a bummer. I am always so paranoid that something is going to happen right before the trip...I feel like I walk around in a bubble until I get there. No matter what I hope you guys have a great trip and that a sprained ankle will not hinder the good time.

I tore 3 ligaments in my left ankle the day we were leaving for a 7 night cruise. Didn't realize how badly I had hurt it and there wasn't much I could do about it at that point. Lots of swelling and pain. Ended up at DR after we got back. Used a brace that slipped over my foot and went up my leg just a tad. It tied so I was able to tighten/loosen it as needed. Make sure she takes tylenol and ice it during the day! You may have to allow some time to come back to room to elevate and ice it............. I hope all goes well and you all have an awesome trip!

Wow, I'm so sorry to hear about your daughter! I hope everything works out well.

Maybe consider renting her a wheelchair for the first few days of the trip. I'm sure you will all make the best of it and have a great time. Enjoy, and let us know how you make out when you get back!

I once tore my ACL/MCL a week or so before our trip, I was pretty mad/upset since I love to be at the parks as much as possible. I was able to walk on it but halfway through the trip was in too much pain and used a wheelchair one day and ECV another because I felt bad making people push me around.

sorry to hear of the sprained ankle to your daughter. You have been given some great advise by people on this site. I think there is only one last issue that needs to be looked at, your daughter. Let her decide to go with crutches or a wheel chair or maybe even a cane depending on the severity of the sprain. My sone would have opted for crutches with no issues. Now my daughter on the other hand would have went with the wheel chair first. All I can suggest is to let her make the final decision. Lastly what ever she chooses I wish that every one goes and has fun and many laughs as possible. Enjoy your vacation.

we just found the wc easier than the crutches because she could transfer on/off rides without having to figure out what to do with them plus as they get tired you don't want them leaning on crutches/putting their armpits heavily long term onto the top of the crutches as it can cause it's own set of problems. it was also easier getting through the crowd with the chair rather than crutches plus with the wc she just parked it with the strollers then took the wc entrance as the trip got into the later days and it was bothering her more. just know that your trip isn't ruined just altered a bit. other than the water park stuff there shouldn't really be anything your daughter can't do.

My sister got a sprain during one of our trips. She was only 8 then but we still went with the wheelchair option. Crutches KILL your arms after about 3 hours.

Thanks for the positive replies....

The Doc gave a script for an inflatable cast. Seems to fit very well. She is getting around much better than day 1.

We will get a wheelchair as needed but plan on standing in lines with all the healthy folks.

Oh that is terrible but everyone on here has given great suggestions so you are definitely prepared! I did 7 days with a torn ACL last year..all I can say is 650 mg Aleve or heavy dose of Naproxen :) Didn't fix my problem...I still hobbled...BUT it definitely helped with the pain! Hopefully your daughter will be ok so have a wonderful time!
