I love IOA theming.

I am not a fan of either DHS or US to be honest. I do love the look of ToT though :)

Fiesta Texas has some cool natural views, it's not huge on man made theming though.

Nothing comes close to MK to us, although AK is very well done. Like I said, IOA is outstanding IMO. I love eating at Burger Digs on the balcony, great view!

I am big on theming :)

Six Flags:

Now, don't get me wrong. I DO enjoy Six Flags parks because I am also a coaster enthusiast. But you can NOT compare Universal to a Six Flags park just because Universal has visible coaster track.

I agree. We paid under $60 for our annual pass to Six Flags, not sure how mud one is to Uni but we just paid $460 for our to WDW a couple of months ago. So almost 8 times as much as Six Flags cost, it would foolish of someone to think hey can get the same experience for 1/8th the cost in a theme/amusement park.

I love Disney (even if I do complain), but there are many great parks (and other things!)out there and they needed to be appreciated for what they are. Busch Gardens Williamsburg was amazing, and I daresay we had as much fun there as a Disney park. There were even some things about it I liked better. Holiday World may not be in Disney's league, but it's well kept, has great rides, friendly and helpful employees, and free soft drinks to boot. Hershey Park is also wonderful - plus, chocolate!

Don't spend your life comparing every experience to Disney World and learn to enjoy things for what they are. Sure, Old Faithful may not be as exciting as a ride on Splash Mountain, but being able to see it is an experience I will always treasure.

I bet there are bunch of local parks that are just great spread across the country. Not to mention it is almost as much about the time and memories at the park as the park itself. Houston had Astroworld for decades, not much of a park in the grand scheme of things but man do I have some sweet memories of it when I was a kid. To me it was a world class park because of those.

Maybe when I hit the lotto I will do a nationwide tour of parks :)

My youth group did a trip to Houston when I was a teenager, and we spent a day at Astroworld. My family couldn't afford trips to Disney World (or much of anywhere) when I was growing up so that trip was a really special treat for me. I was really sad to hear that it had closed down.

I think there are many great parks throughout the country, and they all have meaning to a lot of people. There is a little park called Beech Bend Park about an hour north of us that we try to visit once a year. Yes, most of the rides are off the shelf, but they also have some really cool old carnival rides, a nice little water park, and even a petting zoo (and free soda!). One of their rides used to be owned by Michael Jackson at Neverland, and MJ fans show up to ride it. These little parks will never compete with Disney World, but they have their own unique history and story that should be appreciated. And to some families - this is their Disney World because they will never be able to afford a trip there.

Personally think Universal are n par with Disney. Busch gardens treat their guests like crapola.

and yeah, they do spoil you. Other parks, especially in England just let their standards drop so low ad don't [ay attention to detail. We have a theme park called Drayton manor in the UK and their is an attraction where one of the cave walls has withered away and their is newspaper spilling out of it... They had stuffed a hollow wall with old newspaper and the boats had bird poo in that they hand't cleaned in a while.

I used to be spoiled by Disney, in fact: by WDW, for other theme parks. Even DL and DLP felt a poor man's choice once.

But WDW has moved downwards, and everybody else has moved up. UNI has gotten Disney's game down to perfection. Everything looks well maintained, staff is friendly. Sea World went from a collection of tanks and exhibits to a gorgeous looking park. Everywhere museums and restaurants and malls are moving in Disney's direction.

While sadly Disney, the company that wrote the very book, with WDW as it's crowning achievement, has itself made a massive downward shift because it feels it can better exploit itself that way.

There's a coaster in Six Flags Great Adventure called Bizarro, which is "themed" in that it has a few set pieces and sound that only works half the time. Then there's Skull Mountain which is exactly like Space Mountain except without the space and a queue that is full of advertisements. Both obviously poor attempts at mimicking Disney.

I will say that, from a theme standpoint, Hershey Park in PA isn't terrible. The customer service obviously isn't on par with Disney, and the rides aren't necessarily chocolate themed, but it's a heck of a lot better than Six Flags.
Bizarro was better when it was Medusa...
I used to be a ride operator for Skull Mountain it wasn't the biggest coaster but memories... :inlove:
I wouldn't say it is like Space Mountain at all except it is in the Dark. It used to have strobe effects and a giant skull inside.

I agree on this. The Disney standard for theme parks has a bar set so high, I think other theme park companies (outside of Universal) are like "we'll never be able to do that in our parks, so why try". So as a result the parks may have some fun rides, but they lack the great theming of the Disney ones, so it does feel like a bit of a let-down. Too, when you're at Disney, you feel like you're detached from the world around you. At other theme parks, you simply feel like you're walking around a theme park but are still part of the world around you. I can't help but applaud Islands of Adventure for their theming.....as they ALMOST provide me that same feel as Disney. Local Cedar Point parks here in NC (Carowinds) has so much wrong with it that I generally feel somewhat disappointed as soon as I enter the gates.

God bless the "Ignore" button.
after going to WDW over the years, it's odd going to other theme parks & seeing the difference on how guests are treated.
we've been to six flags here in NJ & kings dominion in VA. it's a big difference than disney.
universal seems to only come in 2nd to disney. guess nobody does it better then disney.

My DH and I stayed at The Borgata in Atlantic City last week for our anniversary. After waiting in line for 45 minutes to check in and dealing consistently throughout our stay with staff who were indifferent (and some who were incompetent), I commented to him that it definitely was not Disney level service.

I have been to Hershey, Six Flags in NJ and NY, Busch Gardens in VA and FL, Great Wolf Lodge in PA, and Kings Dominion in VA. I always find their attempts at theming weak and even a little annoying. They all offer great rides, many more exciting than Disney's E-ticket attractions. When I want an amazing coaster or ride, I can go there. When I want the complete package- great service, theming, family togetherness, Disney wins hands down.

Busch Gardens Williamsburg is so pretty though! I love the theming there.
