Splash Mountain Docked

Take this seriously!

Roger Rabbit's Cartoon Spin was closed for over a year after a little boy fell out and died due to inadequate restraints, which to me means moronic parent sitting next to this kid who was failing to discourage this little one from standing in his seat.

The "Benny The Cab" cars on this ride were apparently re-done with improved restraints and, for some reason, it took them a looooooong time to re-do the ride. Didn't help that Disney was being sued up the sphincter by the family of the deseased with rabid lawyers chomping at the bit to get a huge pay-day out of the conglomorate.

Not that Disney isn't partially at fault, but how much is too much? Yes, Splash Mountain offers no seatbelt. Question is, how hard is it to actually install a seatbelt? Shouldn't take long.

The problem is, can they ever figure out a way to ensure that someone won't deliberately slip out of said seatbelt just to be a jerk? I know rides like Star Tours have a system that won't let the ride operate unless all seatbelts are fastened. I would assume that it's next to impossible without a total big $$ rehab to install a similar system on a somewhat free floating ride like Splash Mountain.

And mark my words, Pirates of the Caribbean, It's A Small World, and Living With The Land are next! 'Cause, after all, if I wanted to take a dive from those boats, who's gonna stop me?

The reason Disney is considering putting OTSR's (Over the shoulder restraints, as found on looping rollercoasters) on Disneyland's Splash Mountain is because of an incident that occured on Knott's Berry Farm's Perilous Plunge. PP has a nearly vertical drop, and a large woman stood up or something and was thrown from the ride. I believe she was killed. It was her fault, but of course Knott's was blamed. PP has been shut down and they might be forced to put OTSRs on it. Since Splash Mountain is so close to Perilous Plunge, they are considering doing this as well. IMO, the only thing it would really need is seatbelts.

No they won't. I'd still ride. But for heaven's sake, do the darned re-hab in less than a year. I went on Roger Rabbit Cartoon Spin at X-mas, having been on it before, and I couldn't detect much of a change to the ride vehicles--nothing that would require over a year of shut-down attraction.

One option mentioned was side-by-side seating with lap bars, similar to the Splash Mountain safety system at Tokyo Disney.

Modifing the logs to have people sit side-by-side would require that the whole ride be modified to fit the new logs. The current railings, drops and lift hills were made for the single-file seating, and widing the logs would require modifing basically the entire track for the ride. That would also probably include the floating sections, depending on how wide those sections are.

Should Disney decide to add safety systems, then they would most likely install single-file seats with individual lap bars (basically the same style used in Space Mountain at WDW). Seat belts require the guests to actually be coordinated (it's amazing how many park guests have no clue how to put on a seat belt for rides such as Test Track, Body Wars and Star Tours). Having lap bars would speed up the whole loading process, and the bars would be locked down during the entire ride and make it virtually impossible for anybody to escape. I know the seat belts are also locked on the rides, but the moisture from the ride and constant stress put on by the visitor would require constant maintenance to the seat belts. It's cheaper and easier to just use lap bars.

Holy smokes! I didn't even think about the wetness factor and how they'd need to constantly replace mildewy stretched-out seatbelts, or, worse yet, mildewy over the shoulder harnesses. Yuck!

But lap bars? I can't quite figure out how they could install them in the logs and keep guests comfortable.

This is sad. I've ridden on so many darned flume rides over the years and never felt compelled to stand up, let alone jump out before the ride is over. If Disney goes for this kind of rehab after having Splash Mountain in their parks for well over a decade without restrains, then what kind of precedent is this going to set?

I see this opening doors for liability and safety lawsuits for every amusement park in America. Once again, I say "Yuck!"

Stupid lawyers! How is this really doing anyone any good? Most of the bad accidents that happen in parks are a result of patrons being completely dumb! Very rarely do we ever hear of a malfunction or ride operator error that causes harm or death. It's always some stupid jerk who stands up when they shouldn't or who decides to jump out of a ride. Or in this case, if I recall the Knotts story correctly, it actually happened on one of their coasters--Ghostrider, I think--with some way too fat individual who shouldn't have been on the ride in the first place. And it was the restraint that helped kill her. But hey, if a park enforces a policy that says you can't ride because you're too fat, then they get a whole other civil suit happening.

Sorry, but my logic says that in all those cases, it's entirely the dumb-bell rider's fault and not the parks or their parent corporations.

End of rant.

This kind of madness has got to stop. Seatbelts on Splash Mountain? Let's see we already have a height restriction and I think that anyone that can pass that should know enough to hang on tight and not do anything to fall out of the log. The skyride is gone, rumors that it was for kids dropping things. Pirates that cannot pillage as in days gone by. What's next? An exorcism for the Haunted Mansion? The Mike Fink Drydocked Boats? Get rid of these lawyers and their "injured for life" clients and let us have some fun. :hammer:

Which just takes me to my point: people are dumb.

They are, it's amazing. In fact, you could have all kinds of restrictions that would prevent the guest from moving inside that log, and somebody would just find a way to mess up. Nothing is idiot-proof because there are a lot of them out there, and they're pretty creative.

I don't even wanna imagine what's next. The one at Pirates was just insane... That takes the word "hipocrite" (sp?) to a whole other level. And what about Snow White's Scary adventure being too scary? The name says it's scary. If you know kids are going to be afraid, DON'T PUSH THEM IN THERE!!!
Geez!!

I say instead of lap bars or seatbelts any type of OTSR they just post a sign

STUPID PEOPLE BE WARNED
If you feel compelled to get out of the log at any point during the ride for some stupid person reason that we can't think of because we are in fact non stupid, it is not our fault if your stupide hide dies thank you and have a Magical stay here at Walt Disney World

:zipit: :zipit: :zipit: :zipit: :zipit: man this is so hard to read.. Yes I can see where safety needs to be in place which with the new air gates etc. BUT on the other hand COME ON COMMON SENSE PEOPLE!!!! Even if your a tourist from another country, and you can not speak nor understand a bit of english wouldnt you think hmmmm log ride fast moving drop at a large steep incline HMM I BETTER NOT SCREW AROUND!!!

But alas our modern world lacks just that COMMON SENSE instead people do dumb things :hammer: and feel ok since I am an idiot I should get money for my mistake

which in turn affects all of us who have common sense. Do I think some type of lapbelt system should be in place? Yes. Should OTSR be installed? NO. OSTR would hamper in an emergency. SM does not go fast enough or do any loops etc to warrant OSTR. Lets say for as an example OSTR are installed we have a guest who is having some type of health problem (which was listed on the warning sign etc, but they still rode the ride) if CM's go to help this guest there is to much time burned up getting the OSTR up, and off the guest, to where the guest can be removed from the log. Now lapbelt's could be installed like the ones used on startours, TT, ToT, etc. New logs could be fitted for this new safety addition but I could not fathom WDW closing down one of its largest attractions for almost a year to retro fit these new safety devices.

Bottom lines is until the gene pool that is this modern world gets a good filter, and or some cholrine shock treatments we are going to have idiots that do dumb things.

Now please dont take me saying idiots, as a reference to any of the tragedies that have happened at WDW that involve children. I see it as they are still young, and what ever happened was an accident but for grown adults I really cant say much they know better. I mean did they just land on this earth???

Just my 2 cents

I also hate that any children have been injured or worse at WDW or any park in general, but that also can be blamed on stupidity, their parent's. As a father of a 7 year old I understand that when he and I got to a park, it is MY resposibility to keep him from doing something that will get him hurt. Thus, it is up to us parents to keep our kids from becoming like these people who do something stupid or who are too stupid to keep their kids safe. (end of rant) Thank you for listening.
