But if a ship is supposed to go to the West Coast it needs to fit through the Panama Canal. The Magic won't fit after her refurb. So I am doubtful about what will be done to the Wonder...

I strongly doubt they are messing with the hull width, which is all that matters with the Canal.

Yep. I didn't see it until late 2007, but I really liked DCA before all of the more recent additions, too. Even before the massive makeover, I thought it was in the same league as DHS and DAK.

Sometimes I actually wonder if DCA 2.0 would have been as successful as it is now without DCA 1.0 preceding it... i.e. there was a good chance locals would react poorly to whatever they built in the parking lot, because it "wasn't Disneyland". If they opened the 2012 version of DCA back in 2001, would it get 10 million people per year? Or would there still be an adjustment period with people foaming at the mouth because of the differences from Disneyland proper? I think the way things worked out for Disney here borders on "New Coke" level of good fortune. DCA was like the loser girl in a prom movie... she just needed to take off the glasses and get a pretty new dress to become prom queen. DCA was a pretty decent park looking at it objectively, but it needed to be made "cool".

We'll never know, but you raise an interesting point that I've thought about for years ... Since I first got hard-hat tours of the park in 2000. Locals wanted something grand. Westcot would have been that and Port Disney would have too. But nothing was going to replicate Disney. People associate so many things (fans mostly good, others maybe not so good) with a castle park. That's why, sadly, TDO has been able to do almost nothing to the MK for 15 years and still the people come. It's why despite the sheer magnificence of TDS, after waiting nine years to see it, I spent an entire day at TDL first. Disney parks start with castle parks.

Maybe I'm not making the best sense right now since I'm craving a Kouzzina breakfast for some reason (anyone watching CBS a few minutes ago likely knows why).

But regardless of what might have been, I can see clearly in hindsight what I saw back in 2001 'This is it? This is all of it?'... Right then, I knew Disney was in for rough waters, but I honestly didn't think they'd have it as bad as they got it. Not saying they didn't deserve it, either.

I get the feeling that if Golden Dreams was an AA show like American Adventure it would still be around. (Not complaining...I'm plenty happy with a dark ride there)

This will be controversial,I'm sure. But I'd rather watch Golden Dreams than take a plastic ride under the sea with Ariel and her cheap Garner-Holt pseudo AAs. Just one Spirit's opinion.

I miss you Califia ... Even if my WordPerfect says you are Claudia.

So when is the Lou Mongello crac... err... pixie dust tape coming out?

Wouldn't matter. Like Marion Berry, he'd get re-elected.

What annoys me about him and the mom-panel at Disney is this...and I hope I word this well...a series of assumptions...

Assumption 1 - Disney is about family fun

Assumption 2 - Planning a Disney Trip is Complicated

Assumption 3 - Disney creates systems and practices that MAKE planning a Disney vacation complicated

Assumption 4 - Disney thinks these systems and practices "enhance" the guest experience, but realize that they have created a complex system that may turn away new prospects/customers.

Assumption 5 - Disney realizes that it's getting to be too much work for the cost for many families, and decides to fight back with online media campaigns.

Assumption 6 - Disney hires a large group of individuals (mostly women) to represent "average moms"...when they are far from "average moms" to tout the "wonders" of a Disney vacation...falling back on the same marketing tactics that late night TV marketers choose.

Assumption 7 - Realizing that many people are turning to the internet for advice on how to plan their overly complex Disney trips, Disney decides to fight back, and appoints a "mom panel" of bloggers who will answer every question you may have about Disney, all while not directly answering many questions at all. Rather, using vague Disney terms and not providing any real information at all (ever searched the mom's panel blog for an answer like "when does Remy show up?"...yeah, good luck...

Assumption 8 - Disney realized that this isn't working, but it's carrying enough supposed web traffic (probably mostly drummed up with SEO scams running on proxys out of India) that they keep the project going, with little improvement.

Assumption 9 - Disney decides to be "funny" and try and create memes, like the goat and the "Ice Cream Break" video, but it just comes off as forced marketing, and is dismissed by the net in general as crappy marketing. However, things like "Paperman" go viral, and Disney ignores this, and even clamps down on sharing this video by sicking their big dog legal on websites.

Assumption 10 - Disney keeps pumping money into people like Lou, hoping he will connect with the middle income Blue Collar NE market that was, for a long time, a regular FL vacation goer...but the market has changed, and Disney hasn't. They changed their media, but not their presentation, or their product (very much).

I have yet to experience The Little Mermaid (whatever those rides are called, it's like ten words long) on either coast so I will hold my tongue. I just like the idea that WDI is still building dark rides. Not convinced that an omnimover was the best choice for a fairy tale dark ride, but again, haven't seen it in person. Wish the AAs weren't outsourced, though... (but the Ursula one looks amazing on film)

Adding to my last post...

Here's a question for you who might be interested in a Disney Cruise...

Does this make you want to go at all? (make sure you volume is low for this vid)

As someone who actually, I dunno...pays for these trips...this makes me want to go see the Grand Tetons or take the kid on a trip to Vancouver...not a Disney Cruise...

The only meme that came out of it (and it was limited) was "I scream rape" (listen to it long enough...)

I currently have 2 booked for the next 12 months, about to book a 3rd, plus 2 "placeholders" that I'm floating. I think I might be resembling this woman you read about. In my defense, tho, 1 is the girls cruise with all the ladies/pals from here, 1 is the Panama Canal with my family (bucket list!), and the 3rd that we're eyeballin' is 99% do-over since I was sick as all hell for the majority of the Fantasy cruise we just took. The placeholders just score me some amount of savings when I'm ready to pull the trigger. I can justify anything if I think about it enough. :D Ready to start a sub-chapter in your book???

It's very easy to become addicted, like I said. I think you've been on one more DCL voyage in three years than I have been since they've existed. And you've done the new ships, which I haven't yet.

I'd say moderation is good, especially since you haven't been to the international resorts or even, DLR, right?

But what's that you say about the Panama Canal? You know, that could be my 2014 Spirited Faux Top One Percent Spring Holiday!:)

While I never got to see Golden Dreams, I was not a fan of Little Mermaid. It just felt so cheesy and cheap, and don't even get me started about the ending....What happened to classic Disney storytelling? There was no story told at all....Anyways, I said in my somewhat recent DLR trip report that I actually loved DCA 2.0 and it is absolutely one of my favorite Disney parks. Knowing what was part of DCA 1.0, I think I would have enjoyed that park also.

I find the Pixie Dust to have a less-greasy feel than the DVC sales. Somethin' a little too slick involved in those sales. What does it mean that I trust in dust more than I do "buying" DVC?

Such a heavy question to ponder at 2:20 a.m. ... Good thing I don't work (usually) mornings.
I'll have go think about this and ask the boys in the lab to run a DNA test ...wait, I think that came from binging on CSI: MIami over the weekend.

Why wouldn't the Magic fit? Are they widening the ship? Guess I should go look up the canal expansion project to look at completion dates. I know that project has been underway for some time now. ;)

I don't know if they are making the ship wider. I haven't seen that. But the Canal is getting larger and will accommodate say ... Dreamier ships in the not too distant future.

I strongly doubt they'd fudge with the structural integrity of the hull for existing ships...but, I did catch your "hint"...

Just a great summation of Disney and social media here in the middle of the night. Anyone want to send this over to the Parks Bloggers (even if I have the feeling they'll be reading anyway)?

You nailed it.
