Any message board is like this, really. (or in the process of becoming like this) I go to message
boards that pertain to my industry and if you spend a bit of time you can sort out the moaning
from the 'oh, hey, that's a good idea'.

The fact remains there is no evidence that Disney is doing anything based upon what is said here.
It would be awesome if their social media were something other than canned sanitized stuff,
and we could actually engage. A true presence would probably engender more respect and less
name-calling.

Do you have inside info that Disney social media employees come here, and dismiss this all
as 'doom and gloomers', or is that just supposition on your part?
Social Media most definitely monitors here - someone found the job posting for the position once...

OK, then, hi social media!

Here's my beef about non-interaction. I will pick a random question that is asked on the boards, and then give three possible responses:

What happens:
Q: Can someone tell me why the interior of the Dinosaur ride at DAK is so dark?
A: nothing

What might happen if they engaged today:
Q: Can someone tell me why the interior of the Dinosaur ride at DAK is so dark?
A: Thank you for asking a great question about Disney Parks©®™ Animal Kingdom©®™ ! We always
strive to give our guests a Magical©®™ experience. We are sorry that you feel that way about
the attraction. Surveys show that this attraction ranks highly as part of our Disney Parks©®™
Animal Kingdom©®™ experience! We hope that you can enjoy your day at Disney Parks©®™ Animal Kingdom©®™ !

What I really wish would happen:
Q: Can someone tell me why the interior of the Dinosaur ride at DAK is so dark?
A: Thanks for your question. The experience of Dinosaur is intended to be dark and mysterious,
and the lighting reflects that. There are some lighting effects which are currently not working,
such as the meteor shower, and we have them slated for maintenance. We have chosen to keep
the attraction working in the meantime. The reality of our staffing and budgeting means that this
may take a while, but we do appreciate the fact that you care enough to bring this to our attention.
Watch for a full refurb of Dinosaur in the coming year--and we think you'll like what we do!

Well, I don't know if they 'really mean' that. The net result of no interaction or that canned schtick is to make people feel that way, though. There's nothing wrong with them wanting to make money--or maximize profit. Brand and consumer engagement is a great way to do both. Building a Magical©®™ phony wall between you and your biggest fans doesn't help. What it comes down to for me is that the people on the boards are .00001% of their consumer base, and don't amount to a hill of beans.

That's a little harsh and it gives us all an erroneous opinion of our net worth. In order to be thought of like that we would have to matter. We do not, so expelling all that energy when your group is waiting on the first tee, would require someone that cares. I don't believe that is true anymore. What is done is done as a business move only and only to retain the status quo, but in the long run we are not in the thought process of their very important lives.

If Disney social media types monitor this board (and I have no doubt that they do) I'm sure they're not wading through this monstrosity of a thread!

Part of the problem is the extreme negativity. It's hard for the company to take people seriously when they come across as just plain negative. There are many posters on here that have valid complaints and give a fair assessment of the situation whose view point should be taken seriously by the company. Their posts are often buried amongst posts calling people whores, critiques of guests weight and dress or accusing anyone who says anything remotely positive as being a plant for the company. That kind of stuff, while sometimes entertaining, hurts the possibility that someone working for Disney will take the valid complaints seriously. In other words we get dismissed as being doom and gloomers.

I would say anyone who focuses on the language rather than the message is doing a disservice to his or her company (and that goes for any company).

I know we are talking about Disney, but this goes on in many, many businesses.

With all due respect...this is a Disney website....right? It very well does happen in other companies but we are talking about it happening within Disney. On that thought...I may start HostessMagic.com or AppleMagic.com or IBMMagic.com.

I agree that a message board is not the ideal format for the type of feedback the company would want to collect. Most people on message boards are annonymous and would be way less likely to say some of the things that they say if it was pinned to their names professionally or personally. Maybe the Al Lutz thing worked for DLR partially because it was primarily a blog from someone who was the unofficial spokesman for the fan community and an identified person. This site isn't intended to be that and IMHO shouldn't be. The WDW based blogs sites are mostly lacking any strong criticism. They are just fan sites.

I am not an insider and I have no idea if people from Disney monitor this site or not. People who are insiders say that the site is monitored. IMHO the tone (from some posters) is likely to cause someone who works for the company to discount a lot of what is said. Put yourself in their position. Part of your job is to monitor a bunch of online sites and take a flovor of what the fan community is feeling. You would probably throw out the outliers (extreme positive and extreme negative) and focus on the middle. Like I said, I think there are a lot of good critical observations made here that could and should be viewed by the company but sometimes they get burried in pages of over the top comments.

Agreed, but it is human nature to do this. Many a good message is lost based on some unfortunate, poorly chosen words.

Think about somone who covers politics and is considered to be a right wing conservative who is overly critical of every move Obama makes and is known for making "over the top" comments. If that person lists out some valid and fair criticisms on some policy or political issue a lot of people will immediately discount the statements because of who made them and the tone they used.

A good analyst can sift through the words to find the message and heed it's warning. And I do believe that TDO's social media department discounts all but the "Best Cupcake in The World" type threads and deduces that all is well inside the Disney Bubble.
I actually HOPE that Disney continues on their current path of arrogance and complacency. Everybody loves a good train wreck!

Yes and no. People tend to watch people who they already agree with - it doesn't matter how rational or "over the top" a commentator is, they are almost always preaching to the converted.

But, bringing this back on topic, I think it's a mistake to assume TDO ignores this thread or won't take it seriously because Spirit uses the word "."

The Orlando Sentinel published a very depressing article yesterday about future WDW growth slowing...

http://orlandosentinel.com/#section/-1/article/p2p-77598606/

It quotes Iger of saying Disney loves high speed rail... in China!!! Iger sounds like a complete idiot in this article. If you ever have children like him, I'll disown you! (from Back to the Future)

Well, this doesn't sound like projections that would bring about a Star Wars land, DHS redo, and Avatar - in addition to the rumored projects for Disneyland. If anything, something like this would encourage Disney to continue their "wait and see" philosophy before giving anything the greenlight.
