I am a bit surprised by that, but shouldn't be. ... I know your info is generally great, but I want to ask around on that as I thought they had a ways to go.

But I do know they want this baby open ASAP ... and it will likely be huge while Disney markets it's modest Fantasyland project (are Memaid's SQ issues solved yet?) and these absurd small-time events like the one at the Canada pavilion or the older foamheads coming back. (As an aside, take a look at what DL is doing in January and February for its part of LTM and ask if TDO has outright contempt for fans and guests in general)

Oh, and SW has its COLD new attraction coming too.

It's OK, the Disney fanbois will talk about the two-minute kiddie coaster that's arriving in 14 months. (imagine my Dr. Evil smiley here!)
Oh, they do still have a ways to go on the ride in general. Interior themeing is just getting underway, but they doing the ops walk through this evening and if all goes well with that, they are suppose to start with the ride vehicle programing tomorrow. They are aiming for a Memorial Day Grand Opening. With softs as early as early May.

I got DVC points used a while ago (back when you could buy used points and get the same privileges as "new buyers"). However, we go to the parks less and less. I believe this DVC behavior has been alluded to several times in this thread. I think the cheap PAPs have the potential to backfire. I purchased them, but really will there be lots of great new stuff for us to see or improved maintenance? Will Christmas lights be put out this year? Will netting be removed so I can admire the Tree of Life? Will a dragon fly around the FLE during a time I'm at MK? I don't know......It seems like they'll be data mining from a customer base that gets a little smaller every year.

Please explain to me how that is a fact. It may be your opinion, but DAK, while it could use a lot of help, is the park in WDW that is in the best shape right now

The fact is simply from the people who have shared their opinions about the park over the years. Do you deny it is a park that you see people simply not appreciate? Do you deny there are people who write it off as simply like 'a zoo'? It has nothing to do with it being 'in the best shape' etc. It's the best park of it's type in the world - that doesn't mean it's going to appeal to everyone. A simple reality that has played out for the last decade plus.

It's amazing how so many people have been quick to jump on my posts as attacking DAK instead of actually looking at what was said. It's as if.. everyone has completely forgotten the last nearly 15 years of Disney community and somehow everyone magically has lined up to adore DAK unilaterally.. with no dissent at all.

How dare you?! Disney is king... No one beats them! And you have the nerve to call yourself a Disney fan. Mickey Mouse forever!(meanwhile, construction continues at Universal...) -__________-

When I finally get to Florida to visit WDW, I will come back to California and patiently wait for you and @Cosmic Commando to move to the Golden State. I'll hold my breath while I'm at it to speed up the process.:D

You have no idea how much I want to move back to SoCal ... this year we had no fall here in paradise and 2013 has largely been days of 80-plus without much sun, but with lots of humidity. ... And please don't hold your breath, I have enough pressure on me as is!:)

I have found that the people who like DAK, REALLY REALLY like DAK. And MOST others find it to be completely laking as a theme park and a mediocre at best zoo. I live in a swamp and I don't have to pay $85 to go enjoy animals in it. I took the kids for a day out around the area. And for less that $25 in gas I showed them Gators, Blue Heron, River Turtles, Osprey, Peregrine Falcon, the cutest baby Armadillo, Sand Hill Cranes, Dolphin, Star Fish, Loggerhead Sea Turtles and Manatee. And icing on the cake was an Atlas Rocket launch and a really big cruise ship. Not a bad day out.

I can just about guarantee (but, admittedly, with no way of proving it) that one of these two statements is true:

1) You don't know your own consumer behavior as well as you think you do.

2) Other consumers - most other consumers - don't behave in the same way you do.
In this case, I know my own consumer behavior well. That is how I have gone close to 20 consecutive trips without every buying a single thing in any gift shop Disney has. I don't go there to buy stuff, I go for the park experience. Yes, I will buy water, Mickey Bars, Dole Whip Floats and lunch at a counter service place, but other then that...not interested. Note: Even the 19th visit when I bought a couple of T-shirts for my Grandchildren, it was out of guilt and not Disney induced guilt either.

That would mean that #2 applies to me. That is why I am not concerned about that part of the NextGen plan book. How it affects my in park time, etc. still remains to be seen, so I'll reserve judgement until then.

Well the weather's been just lovely here, but I understand the tough job of being the Spirit on these wonderful boards.

DAK sorta harkens back to the old Vacation Kingdom of the World days, which is likely one reason why I love it so much and would rather be there than at the Tired Kingdom. But many of today's guests simply do not have the time and/or money to stand and watch the tigers for 30-40 minutes like I sometimes do. They don't have time to soak the beauty of the atmosphere in because they're paying $8,000 for 10 days and they have to RIDE ALL THE FREAKING RIDES AS MANY TIMES AS POSSIBLE!!!!

I certainly agree about the change in style in resort vs amusement parks.. but I don't get as far as you do with that for DAK just because DAK is dominated in volume by 'things you look at' vs 'things you ride'.

I yearn for the days when WDW was a true resort and the entertainment outside the theme park was just as much the draw as the park was. But the 'speed' of life today seems to have grabbed vacation life now too. I mean - how many simple lake resorts do you hear about anymore?

Heck even look on these forums - people are begging for new theme park attractions... not things outside the parks to come and enjoy in WDW. The resort concept seems dead. Now it's about simply moving people between their base to serve their biological needs of sleep/eat/poop and the theme park gates.

But back to the DAK comment - I still stand by the comment that it's a park that alienates a lot of people. Disney has done a poor job of differentiating it and selling to it's strengths I think. Being tied to the hip to the other parks probably drags it down too in the type of people it can attract. It's a fabulous park - that hasn't really rang true with everyone (even in Disney's demographic) unfortunately. It's like the bad taste some people had of Futureworld... but worse for them.

Try living in the frozen wasteland also known as Minn-e-snow-tah freezing your tukus off when the temps don't get above zero all day. Our high today was -5°. Why do I live here???

Have I told you lately that I LOVE you!

Do you know how often I get that? Yet, alas I am alone tonight ... and sooo ho... lonely!:D

That is the best news that I have heard all week! While I would love to see Disney do something with the rotting abomination that used to be River Country, a new DVC is the last thing that I would want to see built there.

Agreed.

Here's an idea... If they want to add DVC to the Fort, why don't they add timeshare campsites? It is a campground after all, and I know plenty of people who would line up and pay a premium to have a campsite on the lake. Just think of all of those million+ dollar Prevosts out there that are just waiting for that special slab of concrete that they can call their very own (at least for a week or two out of the year). I know that DVC campsites wouldn't command the premium prices that DVC suites would, but the initial investment to add a couple of DVC campground loops would also be substantially less than what they were planning. Just a thought. Call it a 'smart' way to 'value engineer' the project.

If you get a chance, feel free to plant that idea in the ear of someone who can make it so... ;)

At this point, my idea would be to return as much of the land to nature as possible and renew and reopen the pool (they never would as it would be cheaper to install a new one and they love zero entry for handicapped accessiblity and they don't want pools that are 8-10 feet on the deep end ... apparently, they never got the memo that people drown in a foot of water) and the nature trails.

But I see the land sitting as is for years to come. At least until some kids get in there and drown and Disney lawyers try and blame the folks that have been sneaking in and taking videos for it.

The ONLY reason I see DVC not going in is the cost of 'removing' the remnants of RC and then coming up with a resort plan that fits the fragile ecology of the area. It will cost a (blank)load of $$$ and Disney is too damn cheap.

Yep. I just got a note saying as much.

But I hear Disney has this new film out about a family vacation at WDW ... wait ... what?!??! That's NOT a Disney film?!?!? What about a Jeff Lange production??!?! Oh yeah, he only films IP. I just don't understand. Must have missed something. It looked so good ... MK and EPCOT and family. What could be better?

A lot of ignorant people have ignorant ideas. And some people just have different tastes.

But when you look at the number of people that DAK pulls in annually, it is a VERY impressive number.

I rarely buy anything either. Which is why I don't want Disney to know that. Which is why I won't be wearing any freakin' wristband.

That is the vibe I'm getting. I have not heard great things about Pirates and Tron and they are two of three big new showcase E-Tix in the park.
But are these issues that budget could actually fix or would they just be bedazzling a soulless park which is the very sort of crass, blatant marketing that those who never understood Disneyland accused it of being? I just don't have much excitement for Shanghai Disneyland because I have a hard time getting excited about Iger's vision of theme parks.
