Well worth the read but I've enclosed some quotes for your skimming pleasure!

"Sony Pictures Entertainment, which has long held the license to make movies with the Marvel Comics web-slinging superhero, is bringing the character to Disney and Marvel Studios' Marvel Cinematic Universe in a collaborative deal announced Monday night."

"Spider-Man will first appear in a Marvel film before getting his solo feature that is scheduled to arrive in theaters July 28, 2017. The movie will be co-produced by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and former Sony studio head Amy Pascal."

And of course a little tidbit from Iger riddled with dollar sign eyes $.$ and one of his favorite buzz phrases "franchise building" :
""Spider-Man is one of Marvel's great characters, beloved around the world," said Disney chairman and CEO Bob Iger. "We're thrilled to work with Sony Pictures to bring the iconic web-slinger into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which opens up fantastic new opportunities for storytelling and franchise building.""

"Franchise building" is precisely why people love the MCU and why competitors at DC/WB are rushing to keep up.

"We at Marvel have a plan, quite simply it's divine. A plan you spell C-O-N-T-I-N-U-I-T-Y."

this is interesting for a couple of points..
first, this is now restaging the MCU - as you can see if you read on that many Marvel movies got moved back including - Thor Ragnarok, Black Panther, Captain Marvel. But the Avengers movies are still in place.

I don't think this means Spidey gets added to Capt. America, but I do think his solo movie thrown in in 2017 will tie him into the new Avengers stories.

I think the term "franchise building" coming from Iger has a different connotation than that of a film studio, as commonly discussed here ;). I'm pumped spidey will be in the films though, and he very well could be in Civil War as he's present in the comics

Found this in a Story on TheVerge.com: http://www.theverge.com/2015/2/10/8010659/spider-man-rights-sony-marvel-studios-new-movie

Good cheat Sheet about who owns what Character's Movie rights...

This seems like a good deal for Marvel/Disney and Sony. I'm guessing the value of the two franchises, and the idea of furthering the two story lines weighed heavily in the agreement between the two studios.
Count this another big win for Iger? The next CEO (Staggs?) is going to have some big shoes to fill.

Now, for the inevitable "Disney park attraction" questions...
Anybody want to place bets on how many posts before somebody asks "will we see a Spider-Man attraction at a Disney park?". (My post doesn't count)

I heard this means they are going to completely disassemble the Spiderman ride at Uni and place it where the hat was in DHS and rename the park to SpiderLand? I trust the bus driver who told me...

It was stated in the press release that he will first be introduced in one of the Marvel movies before his solo movie in 2017. The only likely candidate would be Captain America: Civil War (or possibly Guardians 2 if it's just a post-credits scene).

Hopefully it won't just be an post-credits scene, but probably will be.

The only negative about this news is that Amy Pascal is still involved.

I know rumor was original plan was to have Spidey tied into Cap 3, but I thought that got canned after the initial talks fell through. Only time will tell, would love to see Spidey sooner, and see how Disney/MCU addresses this.

OMG! I heard the same thing from not only a comic store employee but also the cashier that checked me into my Disney hotel last week!!!

They also said that all of the Marvel rides will carefully be uploaded on huge trucks and moved down I-4 from Uni to a new 5th gate at WDW!

Disney swapped the rights of Roger Rabbit for all of the Avengers AND Harry Potter!!!

It'd be interesting to know if they kept that possibility open. In this kind of deal, I don't know if the talks ever truly "break down". It's kinda like when you walk out of a used car showroom. You know the car dealer is gonna call you back in.

Feige is pretty damned smart. I'd be shocked of they didn't construct the movie in a way that he could be added just in case the deal got done.

I'm guessing Spidey fills much of the Cap 3 role that was, until yesterday, intended for Black Panther. He was too big a part of Civil War in the comics to not include him in that story if they have the rights to use him. BP can be used in Civil War in a smaller role.

Since Spidey plays a massive part in the comic book version of Civil War, it seems it would make sense to have him in Cap 3.
(this next part is trying hard to be un-spoilery whilst still discussing something of interest to me)
Of course, if he plays the part he would play in the comic, it would require a fair amount of faith that the movie buying public would buy his previous film experiences as part of his current incarnation, or the fact that he's been operating for quite some time in the MCU without mention in any of the previous MCU films. Otherwise his part in the story doesn't hold the same emotional impact and could serve as a distraction in the film rather than an important plot point.
Also, that would make his standalone film very interesting, depending on if they decided to let Doctor Strange play the Mephisto part to McGuffin his Civil War actions away, or if they let his standalone film exist in a post-Civil War world for him to deal with the ramifications.

Hope that was vague enough to be non-spoiler.

It's just about confirmed it's going to be Civil War.
