How much is reasonable to budget for spending money and food for a family of 4 (small kids). We aren't doing the dining plan. Any tips/advice are appreciated!! TIA

How small are the kids? Do you plan on mostly quick-service or table-service meals? Of the table service meals, what price point?

We usually do one table service meal per day and bring $200 per day for my wife and I. The baby isn't old enough to need her own meals yet. That covers food, souvernirs, tips, etc., and leaves us with more than enough.

Kids 4 and 2. We will do one character dining experience, but other than that it will probably be more casual/quick dining. I think breaking it down to a daily amount is a good tip. It will make it easier to plan. Most of my friends keep telling me to figure on $1000 for food and extras for the week.

That should be plenty if you plan on counter service dining. Many meals are big enough to share, especially for the little ones.

$1,000 will easily do it. When our kids were about the same ages, we calculated food and souvenirs to be around $800. A decent part of it covered the souvenirs portion :). So if you have better will power regarding gifts, it'll be OK.

*edit* Looked back at some info and it was about $920

Last time we went, we budgeted $1500 for spending money. We ended up going a little over, but we had a LOT of character meals and we bought a lot of souveniers.

Depends where you plan on eating. With little ones you're probably doing more QS restaurants, but you will probably spend more than you think on souvenirs. For a week stay my wife and I with eating at nice table service restaurants, we drink and souvenirs bring around. 1500-2000 spending money. We figure around $250 a day

I agree that for food estimates, look at the menus online. Steve just posted a bunch of newly updated menus, so you can get a real good idea as to prices. Most CS meals will run you $9-15 per entree, plus another $2-3 per drink. A TS meal can easily be $20-30 for the entree, and the prices for character meals are posted online, depends on what meal you are eating.

Over our last couple of trips, we average about $100/day for a family of 4 for food(kids are now 10 & 14). We do QS for the majority of days and will get a couple of snacks per day as we want them. We do try to do one sit down meal per trip that we pay for using our Disney Points, so I haven't factored that in to my amount above.

For souvenir's we typically buy a magnet, an ornament and each kid gets a pin or something small like that. So we're well under $100 for the entire trip.

Over the years we have increased the amount each day we spend, some of that is do to things costing more, others eating more table service. We usually do quick service one meal each day, and drink water with that meal. I always told the kids they could have a drink, or ice cream later that day, it was always ice cream. We have almost always brought what we will have for breakfast each day with us, so that saves a lot. I'm thinking about $125 per day would be enough, not enough for lots of frills, but enough for a fun trip.

The same here, but not because we want to splurge, but rather we're getting better at estimating the costs. I'm still shocked at how much $$ it costs to eat. Its just not a WDW thing and they're the only ones raking us over the coals. I've been on vacation in other locations and the price of food is just as expensive.

I think that's a good plan. Also, when we go I buy our kids (who are a little bit older than yours) gift cards with spending money on it. That way when it runs out, that's it. Might be a good idea for your 4 year old. Or just buy one for both kids that way YOU don't overspend on souvenirs.

Reasonable spend? That is a completely subjective topic. My vacation budget is not yours, or the next persons. No advice there. :greedy:
I have to agree with this, different people have different spending habits. We get the meal plan and still spend on average over $100 a day. Maybe a little more since the release of the Pandora park exclusive charms. Souvenirs are part of the trip for us. Helps us get through till the next trip.

Kids meals are around 6 dollars, adults at a QS should be around 12 to 15. We often find we can share an adult meal and be fine. Budgets are very personal and every one of ours will be different. We spend way less than what some people have quoted here, even on some big spending days when I have to have a souvenir that I really want. We often find we budget way more than we spend too. Take what you can and decide for your family what are the limits. A souvenir every day or just one for the trip? Decide before you go so you are on the same page! Above all have fun! If you get the WDW bug you will like many of us and go back year after year!
