Spaceship in Spaceship Earth

Technically the moon was on the other side of the track. This area was directly below the larger satellite. This area was black tarped.

Yes, what I meant was that the tarp was supposed to be some sort of lunar surface though I believe (it was shaped) although I could just be using my imagination to justify it.

Thats an awesome video Bosrb71!

So in general, from this area how much vertical clearance is left until SSE's roof? About 40-50ft or so?

@marni1971 I solved an earlier mystery from this thread.

So if you recall this photo below, everyone knew Gutenberg was on the left but the figure on the right was originally speculated to be Window Girl or Renaissance Girl:

However pay close attention to the stool it’s sitting on, the hand poses, leg position, wig, etc..

Voila, mystery solved...

Not sure if anyone noticed this but it’s from an evac back in November. He’s standing directly underneath the you know what. You get a sense of how massive it is.

Evacs of this area must’ve been amazing back in the day.

Just imagine yourself standing directly underneath the air filtration unit or whatever it is directly underneath the cylinder.

These photos are great! Thank you for posting!

I suspect more people remember this scene than we realize. About two weeks ago, my dad asked me about it. He had finally watched the Imagineering series on Disney+ and noticed the Imagineers working on the satellite. That night he mentioned it on the phone and said the one-two punch of outer space and the original descent had been “so inspiring for the ‘80s.”

Always a pleasure to see this thread pop up. When I was evacuated from SEE in 2007 or 08 I was evacuated in 180top/the planetarium. It was incredible. We walked all the way down the descent. My photos weren’t the best but I stood under “the window” and it is insane how big of a structure it is.

Yeah you definitely get a sense of scale in @marni1971 ’s photo of it here..

She’s a full scale AA (about 5 feet tall sitting I think)

Another thing I’d like to point out in the photo above is that it appears she had an additional set of spotlights in the top area above her. I’ve yet to see any videos where they show up however.

Found another Cronkite video that slipped under the radar. Formatting isn’t the greatest as it doesn’t take up the entirety of the screen. @marni1971

But yes, she’s there, just barely visible. It seems her spotlights are stronger here than the backlit panel behind her head (although that could be due to the videos quality). Nonetheless I’m happy to have found another video featuring her as most Cronkite videos don’t (most likely due to the space stations red lighted windows being more of the attention drawer unless you were to turn around).

Another from under the radar. The background audio quality is amazing honestly with the animatronic voices and sound effects clearly audible. Cronkite is a bit quiet, giving us a rare treat to hear the above. Unfortunately there’s a few cuts here and there but the audio quality makes up for that.

Also features a flash photo being taken of the family watching tv which shows off the above screens that were originally there and the house silhouettes:

@marni1971 the audio might come in handy.

It reaffirms that the Cronkite version used all the 1982 ”music” all the way to 180 top :)
