The Story light concept is supposedly dead. I am on edge too but have some cautious optimism.
I actually really liked the idea of a story light guiding you throughout the ride. It would've added some more stuff to the scenes. I wasn't really happy about the change from communication to storytelling (mainly because storytelling was just communication without the innovation aspect) but it was only once I saw the concept art with Moana supposedly in the Phoenician scene where I really hated this update.

It was apparently going to be stuffed with IP.

If this truly happened I think it would top JII being replaced by JIYI as the worse wdw update of all time. At the very least with CR it tries to theme itself as a Epcot pavilion. I can only imagine this version of spaceship earth would’ve been a giant advertisement for Disney brands. What even is Epcot supposed to be in the executive’s eyes???

For better or for worse, it's the next EPCOT project. I think it's a pretty common sentiment that the current version of SSE is the weakest show its ever been, so I think a sensible refurb only stands to improve.

Yeah, but if they try to make the new crappy theming for Epcot fit within it it will just mess it up. I don't want to see Moana's grandmother as a stingray.

Test Track going with it's third evolution first is a great thing that at least could give some inspiration or idea and whether Test Track 3.0 succeeds or not is unknown and especially it's taking hints at a former opening day attraction.

I don't think that was ever a real thing, just fan fearmongering over a piece of concept art that they never went into detail about (or publicly released)
Idk, on top of the flying stingray, the boat also is the same shape as Moana's boat in the film. Even if nothing was confirmed by Disney, I think it was likely Moana was a part of the plan. Unless Disney inevitably scaled back the project and this got excluded.

I had always interpreted this as blue sky art first and foremost, and if not some kind of Polynesian culture commentary with the stingray acting as the story light. There's enough resemblance for the kids to go "Look mommy, Moana!" and no direct enough ties for us to get disgruntled about.

As far as I know there were no real changes made to the SSE project after it was announced, they just pulled the plug on it entirely in 2020.
