Space Mountain?

DROPS!!! The ride needs DROPS!!! Drops in the dark are the best thrill! They do not have to be great big Six Flags size drops, but some decent ones please. Although the refurb at DL SM is very cool....I cannot believe they kept the SAME track layout. All those right turns?! Good grief! Im all for nostalgia, but the cue is really out dated. It could be updated and at the same time maintain some of the current appeal.

The problem is the interiors of both DL's and WDW's Space Mountains are not high enough for very many decent drops. The ride would be over pretty quickly.

My husband and I went to Disneyland last Sept. for the first time and had the chance to ride the new version of their Space Mountain. Now - I don't know what the old version was like, but this updated version was incredible! If WDW is going to refurb Space Mountain then I think they should take some of the features from DL to spice it up. A few things we noted that REALLY made this ride great:
- The music (timed perfectly to the ride) - AND right in the seat (like Rock n' Roller Coaster)
- The spinning tunnel effect
- Darker interior with more lights (asteroids, etc.) - Really made me feel like I was moving much faster

Don't get me wrong - I LOVE WDW's version of Space Mountain - It's a classic. However, DL's version is definitely superior and my new fav!

Maybe I'm too much of a purist, but I like SM just the way it is.

I didn't care much for the PoTC refurb, nor for the El Rio/Grand Fiesta refurb, nor for the Living Seas Refurb.

I'm all for necessary, routine refurbs for maintenance and safetey and such, but I hate sensless refurbs just for the sake of change.

You wouldn't have gotten along very well with Walt Disney then. One of his favorite things about having a theme park was that he could go back and change things.

As I've stated before, Space Mountain is supposed to be futuristic. When it first opened it was cutting edge. Now it's a joke. The DL version surpasses it in so many ways, that WDW should be embarassed by their version.

A great deal of discussion happened before DL's Space refurb...keep it similar, go with a launch, etc...ultimately they decided to keep it the same but plus it with new track, better effects, new audio, fewer light leaks, dense and clear starfield, enhanced rentry tunnel, etc. They wanted to please the purists and make the ride better. It worked. Now, they had no choice but to replace the track because the addition of onboard audio caused dangerous wear and tear. I would imagine the same logic would prevail at WDW...keep the track the layout, but rebuild it (though they can get away with the only repairs, the track supposedly is not in as bad shape, but if they want to ad onboard audio, they might as well rebuild it now-lesson learned from DL - They replace Matterhorn track piece by piece as needed, but the ride will never be smooth that way). I trust the Imagineers on this one...since they've been through it before....from what we've heard, its all about budgets and schedulingat this point but its likely to happen in the near future.

One of the reasons they kept the track the same at DL is because they were about to order track for the HK version and it's track layout was the same as DL's. It was just easier to order two tracks than to re-design a new one. I would imagine that if they were to re-do MK's, they would likely either re-design a new track or they would go with the DL layout since it's already been designed. MK's track layout is too old. I personally think it would be cool if they just went with one track in the MK version and just made it a longer ride. Then they would also have room to add a lot more special effects.

When I rode SM with the lights on it looked like there would be pletny of room for some bigger drops...like I said, I am not talking 20 story drops here, just enough to give you more of that weightless feeling.

Disney seems to be skimpy on the money when it comes to WDW refurbs. I was hearing something huge like 30 million thrown around, but I bet that gets cut before it starts.

On the cheap, the best things they can do:

1. Seal off the open queue to reduce light. I know people like seeing the cars zoom around the track, but it's a small sacrifice for a big gain in ride experience. Make the ride enclosure pitch black like it should be.
2. More stars, more effects. The ride is already exciting, but more effects to lure the eyes away from turns and drops could add even more to it.

More Money?
1. New track. The layout is great, but new track and trains would benefit.
2. Audio

I seriously doubt we will be seeing a new layout. If they do go with a new layout, the last thing I want is another RnR like DLPs SM. Why do people want another semi-rough Vekoma looper?!

I actually like being able to look over while on the ride and see the queue, I can never tell it's people in line, I always just imagine it as some distant lunar module. And of course I love being able to see the cars zoom around while in the queue. It isn't a big deal to me, I can understand while people would want this ride totally dark. Other than that, great points, I totally agree with them all.

So true!

100% agreed! It was not a fun experience.

Sorry to double post here, just saw this.

In one point in the DL version, you do get a weightless feeling. I love getting to that part, it's fun. Yes it's only one point, but it is there.

I'm all for a refurb to Space, but they need to keep it family-friendly. Many kids enjoy the coaster, and wouldn't be able to ride a LIM launch.
But when the refurb happens, they need to keep the corridors and music in the queue. It has such a timeless feel.

I think they would. Space Mountain is already at a 44'' height requirement. As long as there aren't any loops, and the LIM isn't too intense, I think kids could still ride it.

I know that there have been threads on this topic in the past, but I just wanted to throw this idea out there!

I have been thinking for sometime, that Space Mountain should be refurbished - to live up to its original status - as a LIM Launch attraction like RnR. Though the difference would be, a count down from ten followed by an angled launch, simulating a liftoff, and possibly through a - new - flashing blue tunnel, reflecting on the original ride!

Any thoughts?

PS. A meteor shower would be nice... :hammer:
One word.. No. I'm really sick of stating my opinion on this topic so if you want to know my opinion go look it up there are about 10 posts I put up.

I really love Space Mountain. I think its still a great ride to this day. I understand to an extent why a refurb would be good. It could use it I suppose, as long as the original feel doesn't change much.

But we have to understand. The ride was made to be for everyone wasn't it? Disney is a lot different, and tons better than Six Flags, and I don't want it to get overrun with Thrill rides like coasters. It's all about fun and imagination.

Yes, that drop is great! I've gotten to where I know exactly when it's coming (It's along the second straightaway after a couple of right turns), but I love it!

It may appear that there is plenty of room, but you have to take into account the height of the building and the fact that if it drops too much, you're at the bottom of the mountain a lot sooner, thus resulting in a much shorter ride. I agree they could do it, but really only a few decent drops, and none of them would be able to be very high. There is one good drop in the DL version (as mentioned above), but it's really the only one the building could accomodate in order for the ride experience to last as long as it does. Make sense?

Hmmmm... I'm betting not many people (if any at all) are exactly dying of curiosity to know what your opinion is, and probably won't go to the trouble to search for your other posts on the topic. My advice is that if you really want your opinion known, then invest the time and trouble to type it out again in this thread, rather than direct people to other threads in which you've expressed your opinion. After all, if you were going to take the time to write that you were sick of stating your opinion on this topic, why not just post it one more time? For that matter, you could have just gone to one of the other threads and done a cut and paste of your opinion from one of those into this thread. Just a suggestion.

Don't forget that there is a fantastic drop about halfway through the MK's SM. It feels like you're catapulting off the track...and as rickety as the attraction feels, that might be possible! ;)

Back when DL reopened its version, the CMs at WDW were told that their SM would be refurbished soon, too. A tiny announcement appeared on the Cast Portal for one day; then it was quickly removed. Nearly two years later, everyone is still waiting...
