Space Mountain?

I want to ask a question but I'm afraid I'm going to get attacked. Oh well... here goes...

As I said earlier I wouldn't mind a refurb either. But don't you think we're being too hard on the ride? I mean, to many many people who only get to go once every couple of years, if that, Space Mountain may still be a blast don't you think? No pun intended. A refurb would be nice, but don't you think it's still a great ride, especially for someone who doesn't ride it as much as the rest of us?

In a word, NO! I've only been to WDW three times, the first time when I was 14 and it was ok, but not that great. It needs gutting and replacing with something different. I love the Paris SM version, and there always seems to be plenty of kids and families in the line even with its LIM type launch - it's a great ride. On our last trip to WDW we rode it once, and it was so bad we didn'tbother again. When we goto WDW in Aug I will go on SM, but only because we're going with family who have never been to WDW before, I certinaly won't bother having a second ride - that's a waste of limited WDW time IMO!

He doesn't like the damn ride.. So what?

Hes also a bit of a poo stirrer, but is still allowed to voice an opinion, even though I totally gisagree with the thrust of his argument. Id rather see the technology described in a new additional ride keeping a rebuilt refurbishd space mountain classic.

INTRIGUE

Space Mountain to me encapsulates everything about the Magic Kingdom from my childhood perspective. The anticipation as you walk through those wonderfull tunnels with the dim blue lights and eerie music  and then the view of the rockets loading and the others hurtling around the sky!

I can see both sides of the arguement. Yes it rattles and yes, there are bigger, faster coasters out there and I believe the other parks have much more advanced SM's. However, it represents my childhood (I know that's being selfish :king: ) and I hope they retain the same feel and don't turn it into the rock'n'roller coaster part II. The speed is just fine, the track layout is just fine but it does need a new track and some new effects. Let's just keep the rest the same so us older ones can relive our childhood everytime be board that delightfull old ride and imagine we were 6 again, riding for the first time.

Novelty vs Nostalgia - The classic Disney struggle

It would be nice if they just upgraded the ride quality and nothing else. I sure do like the ambiance and feel of the queue .. classic

IMO SM is wonderful the way it is and doesnt need change. Yes, there are bigger faster coaster out there that may be more advanced, and if you believe that then go to that theme park with that coaster in it. I would rather challenge the imagagineers to create and entirely new creative innovative coaster somewhere else in the MK, that can be thrilling, fast, advanced, etc, instead of them trying to re-imagineer a ride that doesnt really need it.

Upgrade it. Keep the Que but everything else should be updated to modern standards. No loops or anything, but Tommorowlands icon shouldn't be so dated. It's Yesterland.

I agree that some sort of acryllic cover over the indoor switchbacks would provide a much better feel of being in a "space station" about to be launched out into space. Updating the orbiting chocolate chip cookies would also do wonders. A cooler launch into the ride, something more modern, and then even if they kept the same track lay out, just smooth it out, maybe add a few seconds, see if you can get one more dip or quick turn out of it.

And mostly, update the exit area. Its so plain and dull and reminiscent of a deserted department store from the 70's that it kills any thoughts of actually being in space.

i think its a great ride but it def needs a refurb. i love the que, but they could redo to be similar but with updated effects. the windows that look out into space and you see stuff out there are cool but very old. they could rplace them with screens that actually show space. they gotta keep the music tho. i like hearing the star tunnel music then your hear the ride overhead every couple of minutes. The track needs to be replaced with another one but not change the layout, basically the same treatment they gave the disneyland one. no on ride music cause i think that takes away from the experience, especially the whol rockin space mountain thing. i dont like that idea. its good w/ RnR cause it suits the ride. They also need to fix the light leaks and upgrade the effects so people dont think that there is a giant chocolate chip cookie on the ceiling. so basically the track and effects need fixing.

Useless debate.
Refurb will happen, within the next 18 months most likely.

My stance remains the same....Gut that pile and give us a ride worthy of the "Space Mountain" name.

That's gonna be my last word on the subject until I get more refurb info. I'm off now on the way to WDW, and yes, I'll ride that abomination just so I can curse it's clanky bones.....

I agree! We've got the first and the largest SM here at WDW. Despite its age, the track layout is superior to its cousin in Anaheim. WDI needs to restore this thing to greatness!
