Space Mountain?

I know that there have been threads on this topic in the past, but I just wanted to throw this idea out there!

I have been thinking for sometime, that Space Mountain should be refurbished - to live up to its original status - as a LIM Launch attraction like RnR. Though the difference would be, a count down from ten followed by an angled launch, simulating a liftoff, and possibly through a - new - flashing blue tunnel, reflecting on the original ride!

Any thoughts?

PS. A meteor shower would be nice... :hammer:

I'm all for a refurb to Space, but they need to keep it family-friendly. Many kids enjoy the coaster, and wouldn't be able to ride a LIM launch.
But when the refurb happens, they need to keep the corridors and music in the queue. It has such a timeless feel.

Agreed.

Gonna have to wholeheartedly disagree with you on that one. Except for the external structure itself, everything about MK's Space Mountain (including the corridors and music in the queue) is anything but "timeless". This entire attraction is grossly outdated. It's not a "classic", but rather an old, rickety, embarassment.

I have loved SM from the time I was able to start riding it..I wouldn't mind a refurb but wouldn't want to many changes otherwise it wouldn't be "SM" anymore..

SM is still a wonderful ride. I think they should re do it, but definately keep it a family ride. We already have rock n' roller coaster! It along with the matterhorn in DL are timeless classics.

The corridors will most likely remain since the length is needed to get the guests from TL under the RR tracks to the actual ride building outside the park.

it would be nice to see it updated.....its really starting to show its age. With lights that work sometimes and all that. I think a launch would be cool. But with the room they have would it really be possible??? Just as long as they don't bring back any garbage like the Slater video will waiting in line.

It is time they did a complete refurb of SM at WDW. Come to Disneyland and take a ride on ours, they did a great job, nice smooth track, great effects, the works. SM at WDW is not comfortable to ride, its very bumpy, lots of light leaks, I can see the structure and it makes me want to duck down even though I know I'm not going to hit my head. At Disneyland when they refurbed they kept the same track layout, they just put in new track and updated everything else. Personnelly, I'm going to skip SM at WDW until they refurb it, and I hope they do it soon since I love the whole space concept and agree its a great ride.

MK's Space Mountain is neither a "wonderful ride" nor is it a "timeless classic" like the Matterhorn. Space Mountain WAS a great and impressive ride when it first opened....in 1975! But now it's just old and outdated. It's a joke. It's supposed to be futuristic, and in 1975 it was. Most people who still love Space Mountain do so because it's nostalgic, not because it's cutting edge or impressive in any way. Now that the technology exists (and has for quite some time) to make it a sleek, smooth ride with great effects, it's ridiculous for Disney to keep it as is.

Couldn't have said it better myself...though I have often said it.

It simply oozzzess quality quickyness and re rideability. OK its not 21st century but then neither are turkey legs.

:sohappy:

I agree completely. If anything changes about this ride, I would only want it to be the addition of new tracks and the postshow. The queue atmosphere is amazing and this is a timeless attraction. It does need an update, but not one consisting of substantive changes.

So many Disney fans are so hard to please. They don't want anything changed for the better. They act as though the parks are a museum and shouldn't be touched, just left to rot and stay the same. Sometimes changes are for the better. WDW's Space really needs a refurb like DL's. I went on WDW's in November and the experience was not fun at all. I don't see how that thing has quality, it's just an outdated, old ride that is begging for a refurb.

I would have to agree SM does need a rehab, but it does NOT need a change of the layouts.

The layouts they have now are fine, their family friendly and both of them are just plain fun. Disney just needs to give it new track so it can be smoother. That and up the ante on the special effects.

Besides, I would NOT want the current WDSP version of SM to come here. Mission 2 is not even close to being as classic as "From the Earth to the Moon."

DROPS!!! The ride needs DROPS!!! Drops in the dark are the best thrill! They do not have to be great big Six Flags size drops, but some decent ones please. Although the refurb at DL SM is very cool....I cannot believe they kept the SAME track layout. All those right turns?! Good grief! Im all for nostalgia, but the cue is really out dated. It could be updated and at the same time maintain some of the current appeal.
