Space Mountain Refurbishment for Walt Disney World?

I’m still guessing that space mountain completely closes after Tron opens - they can reuse the building for special events.

I’m only partially joking…. There’s no reason to have 2 coasters next to each other and the actual ride is wayyyyy past it’s time.

I could totally see them gutting it and putting in a “play pavilion” type thing.
Oh come one, no need to waste the space for the rare special events, do you know how many different meet and greets you could cram into that area? I could easily see them doing all the Guardian of the Galaxy character or other Marvel crap in that space. A good old meet and greet is much cheaper than an actual ride.

Yeah…. Like what they’ve done to
Poor old carousel of progress in Cali :-(

But don’t worry… they will prop up an old Space Mountain vehicle for a photo op and sell some merch.

They can make it another Moana walk through attraction. It's what Walt would want.

I’ve never not enjoyed a ride on SM. Not once. Maybe it’s the nostalgia for me, who knows? That said, if they ever want to redo it to make it smoother, I’m not gonna kick and scream.

lol. It's been needing a track replacement since 2007. If you ride the TTA Peoplemover with the lights on, you'll see all the sections that were marked with spray paint for replacement.

Nobody's been injured or died (yet), so management isn't keen on taking it offline. Ever.

Exactly. Epcot has a Play Pavilion that they cannot open and MK is dying for capacity. Why on Earth would they do something that would cost capacity and eliminate a popular style of ride? Coasters are still some of the most, if not the most, popular rides at just about any park. My two cents would be to rip out both sides and create one longer ride with a few more drops and curves. They could use Mack or Intamin to create a much better ride experience that would utilize all of the space efficiently. Basically, like Disneyland's version but definitely not a copycat. If they did it right, they could even set it up in a way to accept the holiday/event overlays.

Changing it out for a playground would just be awful. It would be a worse idea than when they initially wanted New Fantasyland to be a bunch of meet-n-greets and no additional rides.

the earliest i think we would see it is when princess and the frog opens, because then you have tron and princess taking up some of the slack... unless something bigger takes precedence. Example something breaks badly on pirates or haunted mansion and needs to be fixed first.
they need the capacity right now that sm provides regardless if the track is beyond needing to be replaced. Too bad they havent put something in stitch to take up some demand.

Just as an FYI, the parts you’re talking about are NOT the track…they’re part of the structural infrastructure of the ride. If you’re insinuating that those parts and braces are structurally deficient, the state would have shut the ride down because that is in danger of collapse. Space Mountain is NOT in danger of collapse.

State? Disney is self regulating

They’re the structure the supports the track. The state also does not inspect rides at Walt Disney World.

State? Disney is was self regulating (ftfy). Don't say self.
Disney being in charge of their own ride inspection is separate from the Reedy Creek Improvement District. Florida allows all parks with at least 1,000 full-time employees and maintain an in-house safety team are exempt from state inspections. Universal Orlando Resort, SeaWorld Orlando and Legoland Florida are all similarly exempt.
