Space Mountain Refurb?

I'd love to see the ride get some attention. I might just be getting old, but the last time I rode SM it was a borderline uncomfortable experience as I was rattled around so much.

well thats a cool way to do it. It's kinda hard to pressurize the angle iron of the support structure however.
the substructure is usually Overbuilt for just that reason. the critical junctures are where the vehicles interface with the structure. any misalignment there will have at least a dent (and a stain) on the concrete curtain wall.

I've been thinking about this. It may be an unpopular opinion, but I think that Space Mountain should be completely gutted and redone. I know this will never happen, but it would be my dream. Give it a brand new track, similar layout, but it needs to be a bad-"butt" roller coaster again. The slowed down speed sucks, the sound was crap a month after "Starry-o-phonic" Sound opened, and this thing doesn't whip me like it used to. Space Mountain was the best of the best when it opened in the 1970s. Now it's just a step above an old coaster at Kennywood or Hersheypark. I am so pumped to ride Disneyland's Space Mountain in July. Time to redo WDW's version.

What you just described is, in essence, exactly what was supposed to be done during the 2009 refurbishment. New track, new rockets, on board audio, new queue and effects, the works. (See the earlier posts by @marni1971 or check out his most recent Space Mountain tribute for all the details.)

What SM actually got is the value engineered alternative that you see today.

I didn't realize the refurb was supposed to be that extensive. I knew they cut budgets, and saw Martin's photos here posted. But that further irritates me that it was supposed to be that way! I also didn't realize he had a Space Mountain tribute video! Off to go watch it!!

Yup, long overdue.
Bring the track from Paris over....it's one of the only things worth bringing mind.

The thrill level of SM these days is like barnstormer with a blindfold on. Only the queue and some of the effects pump up the overall experience.

You sure you want the paris track? I'd have agreed in the first few years of its life, but it is as rough as hell right now. It desperately needs a complete replacement, along with being restored to the original version.

The joy of WDW these days is it's not only "value engineering" in the form of not giving refurbishments the funding they deserve that you need to worry about... it's also the mandate to keep attractions online because of the lack of operational capacity and the trickle down effects of not having those extra FP+ time slots in the pool.

See Pirates of the Caribbean's refurb for the example.

I'm afraid the days of dreaming about Space getting what it needs are further away than ever.

These days, I just ride it to be able to hear the Star Tunnel music.

I'm sorry, but it is a roller coaster, you're supposed to be rattled around. And getting old has nothing to do with it, I'm at that stage of life myself.

Now it's just a step above an old coaster at Kennywood or Hersheypark.

Hey, I grew up with Kennywood's coasters, and so did my kids. I go back to the Pippen (now Thunderbolt, it's the best), and you would have a hard time beating the double dip on the Jackrabbit. If only the Disney coasters were as exciting and interesting, and yes, fun.

Mon April 20 was 10:10am
Thu April 23 was 12:00pm

They booted us to Tomorrowland Speedway on both. I just changed them to better selections and Space Mt wasn't available either day at any time.

Now there is why people HATE FP+ taking an E ticket FP and switching it to a B ticket attraction, They could have easily replaced it with a FP good for ANY ride.

Makes you wonder what the multi stage, multi year refurb they've begun will yield.

Imagine getting that in WDW.
I hear they're getting all new trains with lap bars only...if true that could greatly help the ride.
It's always good to see a solid refurb on a ride...something WDW's Space Mountain will probably never see.

I heard harnesses more like Cheetah Hunt. But anything will be an improvement.
