The following is text from the recent shareholders meeting in New Orleans. All I can say is I HOPE IT IS TRUE

Beyond that ... The only other news that might interest all you hardcore Disneyana fans out there is that the company is now revisiting its decision not to release "Song of the South" on DVD. When quizzed by Carol Koster about the current status of this 1946 Walt Disney Productions release, Iger first expressed his concerns about the film. Wondering aloud if it would actually be possible for today's audiences to put this picture in the proper context.
But Bob (while making no promises about what might happen next with this historic motion picture) then went on to say that " ... we will look at ("Song of the South") again. And ________ Cook (I.E. The Chairman of Walt Disney Studios) would be in charge of that effort."

Why did you blank out ____________Cook's name?

I haven't heard of the rerelease of Song of the South, though I just read about how the Frog Princess film will be set in New Orleans.

I wonder if they'll decide to cut Song of the South down just to make it only about Brer Rabbit and his adventures.

Interesting news. Thanks for the info. :)

The forum blanks out objectionable words automatically. While it is a legit name abbreviation for "Richard" it is also a word which refers to part of the anatomy. And thus, the system blocks it automatically.

As much as I'd like to own a legitimate release of the movie, I just can't see it being worth it for Disney to release this movie. Wrong as they may be, groups would protest and just cause a general fuss for Disney.

Good thing I own a DVD of the film, complete with some nice bonus features. :)

It's really not as bad as some people make it out to be... you just have to remember when the thing was produced.

I don't think that because ____ is part of the human anatomy is the reason it is blanked out.

If that was the case you wouldn't be able to say mouth, hand, finger, foot, arm, etc.

It is a derogatory term.

I guess the way to find out would be to type in the proper word for that part of the anatomy and see if the censors blank it out. However, I'll let someone else be the one to perform that experiment, as I'm afraid the mods might not appreciate it.

You can always just preview your post without actually submitting it.

And yes, you can say the proper biological terms !

Just a reminder, Disney survived protests from the right over their "gay friendly" policies, presumably because they believed in what they were doing. I'm sure they could weather some whining from the left over Uncle Remus. Both examples would strike me as putting principle ahead of politicized chest-thumping.

Neither leftist moonbats nor right-wing wingnuts shall prevent Mickey from his appointed rounds.:ROFLOL:

They also survived protests from the left over their Animal Kingdom park.

Ah, so now we know....although I'm now having a hard time imagining, on a WDW message board, in what context that word would have any kind of purpose.

Uh...just for the record, I'm pretty left-wing, and I don't have a problem with SotS. Many on the left are kinda all about free speech, artistic expression and non-censorship, no matter what the subject matter. Kinda why those lefty whiners in the ACLU have defended the rights of people like the Klan, Hannity & Limbaugh to their freedom of speech as well.

Granted, I'm sure there are plenty of people who consider themselves Democrats or liberals who might feel SotS endorses racism, but not all. Just as not all right-wingers are fat rich white jerks impeaching presidents for lying about extramarital affairs while waiting for their own wives to wake up from cancer surgery to discuss the terms of THEIR divorce in order to marry his mistress. Don't lump my guys together, I won't lump yours. Capice?

Several years ago, I read an editorial and made a copy and saved it in which the author argued that it isn't so much a matter of liberal vs conservative as much as it is a matter of the "freedom" and "order" factions of both camps. Here is a quote from the article:

"Freedom" liberals produced the free-speech movement of the 1960's; "order" liberals produced the political correctness era of the '90s. "Freedom" conservatives of an earlier time valued independent thinking, privacy and rugged individualism. "Order" conservatives would make you honor God, country and the flag. Taken from an article titled "Amendment illustrates shift from freedom to order" written by William Raspberry in the State Journal Register of Springfield, IL.

It wasn't an attempt to lump anyone together. I believe there are rational thinkers and kooks all around. But I think it's probably fair to assume that anyone who would complain about SotS could be considered left of center, just like anyone who would complain about Mickey hiring too many gays would be right of center. It's a statement about which side of the fence people most likely to embrace those particular kooky beliefs would fall, not everyone standing around the fence. Hopefully that removes some of the sting from my post.

Good food for thought there. Thanks for posting it.

We need this one released. It may not be PC by Disney standards, but I think that it was a great film, and certainly deserves the remastering and the attention given to all of the other great films Disney has produced.
