Why is this Disney based card game Lorcana much more successful than the former in park card battle game?

Seems like the card industry is going crazy for these and I had thought you could play a game without the interactive element with the Sorcerer's cards..

I have no idea what the Lorcana game is all about, but yes, we still (occasionally) play the game that you could buy at WDW to play with your Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom cards at home. We had multiple binders of those cards… 😂

Money, people think the cards will be worth alot of money. I dont even think the Disney logo matters much in the frenzy right now and most will never be opened by the original purchaser. Especially since they will supposedly be rare and have chases and rare cards. The theme parks were super mass produced and not that many different ones, with no chases and no special rare cards.

Me either but, it seems to be as obsessive as the Pokemon trading card game as their are people going crazy for these cards..

Next thing they'll add an Orange Bird and Figment one to this Lorcana set and then everyone will go ape spit for them to be rare cards .

Yeah, it has been a nightmare getting your hand on any Lorcana product.

Growing up, my brother and I played a lot of card games together, and he suggested getting into this one too to rekindle that side of our relationship. We live in NY, so we got lucky with the Disney Store in Times Square, but everything is being bought out by scalpers in full lots. Thankfully though, the scalpers pricing keeps dropping on Macari and ebay. I don't think the demand will warrant the premium prices they're trying to charge, and once they get the reprints into the world, it should hopefully stabilize.

Still I think the initial demand was severely underestimated, and this launch will haunt the game for a while.

Speaking as a TCG hobbyist myself, I wouldn't call Lorcana successful quite yet.

Right now, there's hype and speculative buying by people who see it as a kind of investment. It's going to need some kind of dedicated base of people who actually play the game to last beyond that initial hype. Very few TCGs manage to do that.

I don't know what Lorcana is but SotMK was developed and dropped in the parks to prove a concept. I think they were caught offguard by the thirst for the cards and developed the "home game" as an afterthought to sell or "add value" to the binders, maps and other goods that went along with the cards. I was an avid player and have a bunch of the cards but they didn't develop it further and with the breakup of the video game division there was no support to expand the home game.
Plus it was really weird how the powers worked in it, made no sense unless they had expanded the gameplay in the parks.
Jonathon made a game that was addicting and provided many miles of exercise in the park for me.

They seem to be doing a bit of Online Battle with the Disney characters on these elaborate outfits
Disney Heroes Battle Mode, and Disney Mirrorverse they are scraping to anything...

*Patiently waits for a Disney Smash Battle game*

Hmmm, why are they doing that?
SotMK was about saving the Kingdom and restoring normalcy while conquering villians when you completed mission, is there a point to lore/arcana other than to play the game?
From what I can tell is that you "summon" characters to help you out and do battle against players..Mickey looks like the Dark Magician from Yugioh in the trailer...

SotMK was a fun thing to do as an extra thing to do in the park when you had the time. We got in on it over several trips. There were special cards that were given out at events that were not available in the card packs you could buy. They were available like everything else Disney that gets hawked on e-Bay for those looking to add to their collection.
These card collections are popular with those who connect with that genre and they have their own groups who would be buying and selling to other collectors.
There’s a market for everyone, for everything, you just have to look for it and it can be found.
If it isn’t your thing you can’t understand the fascination others have for it.

Packs of cards with given put as freebies to attendees of the recent Destination D event at WDW a couple of weeks ago.
They were included in the large goodie bag ( more like backpack! ) that each attendee was given.

Everyone that sailed on the recent DVC Member Cruise which was just before Destination D received a starter deck (60 cards). The game designer (Ryan Miller) was also on the cruise teaching people how to play.
