Sorcerer's Hat... What's the point?

I've always never liked Mickey's Scorcerer's Hat. It looks cool, but what's the point? Why is it the icon of MGM? What does it have to do with movies? It was good for 100 Years of Magic, but now it just seems rediculouse. It blocks the great view of the Chinese THeater, and it takes away the feeling of a 1930s Hollywood. Does anyone else agree with me?

Maybe the sorcerer's hat has to do with Sorcerer Mickey in Fantastmic!, I'm not sure, though. It does make a nice background for a photo, but the Chinese Theatre was also nice. -Stephanie

Well, I was the icon of the 100 Years of Magic Celebration, but since it's over, it's pointless now. I say move it to infront of the animation building. That'll be cool and act as a weenie for that area. Also, it'll return that area to the 'Holloywood that Never Was' appeal.

I'm really on the fence about this one. I think it looks great and love it in pictues. On the other hand it does kind of blow the theme a little. That has been the trend for awhile. Does it blow the magic? I'd have to say no. It's a great place to hang out on New Years Eve. I say leave it.

You were?! I don't seem to remember that. ( j/k )

Yes, the hat is good on new years eve, but I agree that it would look wonderful in the animation courtyard! That would be splendid.:sohappy:

In the very near future we will loose the rights to have the Mann's Chinese Theater as our park icon. So we used the Sorceror's Hat as the park's icon for the 100 years of magic celebration because of Fantasmic and because it could cover up the theater. (now this was told to me by another CM so I don't know the valditity of it).

The other reason is we will not able to use MGM in the park much longer so they wanted to progressively are rebranding the park. Mann's Chinese Theater is not a Disney icon, however the Sorcerror's Hat is... follow?

It's silly to replace one icon by just putting a bigger one in front of it, but I love Fantasia and the Sorcerror's Hat is a nice, unique icon both in the park and in merchandise.

The way I feel about the hat is that it is a nice hat and is fun to take pictures of. A hat that big needs to be in a central location, due to its size. However, the location it is in, even though it is right in the heart of MGM, is not a very good location. It blocks the Chinese Theater and it throws off the feel of the Hollywood street.

The hat is an important part of Disney history, representing one of the most well known cartoon shorts in history. But its location is probably what's generating the most complaints.

No offense or anything, but all of you are crazy! lol j/k

Well, I mean, it seems liek everybody at this site hates the Mickey wand and the Sorcerer's hat, and they even hate TT and M:S because they liked Horizons and WoM. I, personally, kinda liek the Mickey wand on Spaceship Earth. The hat doesn't really bother me, but it would look better without it. Again, no offense, but a giant hat in MGM is NOT the end of the world! Sorry for my rant...

Please read the post I posted above yours for two explanations of the placement of the hat :).

My vote is against the hat. It's kind of jarring to see it there at the end of the street. I liked it when the Chinese theater was there. I can understand why they put it there though.

I can understand why they did the hat. Epcot has SSE, MK has the castle, AK has the Tree, and Studios has...a theatre with chinese accents? Studios was left without a true Disney original park icon. I think WDI slipped a little on the Earful Tower.

I think the Hat would have been better about 15 feet shorter in scale, and placed about 80 feet to the left (viewed from the entrance).

For me, the Hat represents several things: Mickey coming into his own as Disney's representative, due to "Fantasia," the "magic" of Disney, and the "magic" of films and TV. As an icon, I think the hat is very appropriate for Studios.

Just thought of this...too bad they didn't build it as a walk under just as you enter the park. Wouldn't spoil the view down to GMR, and it would provide shade and rain cover at the entrance.
