Sorcerer's Hat... What's the point?

Well, I mean, it seems liek everybody at this site hates the Mickey wand and the Sorcerer's hat, and they even hate TT and M:S because they liked Horizons and WoM. I, personally, kinda liek the Mickey wand on Spaceship Earth. The hat doesn't really bother me, but it would look better without it. Again, no offense, but a giant hat in MGM is NOT the end of the world! Sorry for my rant...

yup, couldn't have said it better myself

Allow me to be the first to say, you're wrong about the Chinese Theater. That was NEVER the icon of the park. The water tower was always the icon, with the exception of the year that ToT was built, and the icon was ToT just for part that year. As for the placement, I agree with totally. Don't give us this crap about it being out of place. By that logic the Castle is WAY out of place over at the end of Main Street USA. The hat's placement is fine. It's the size and the fact that there's still something behind it that doesn't make sense. The hat should of been made much bigger, and it should have replaced the Chinese Theater Facade. The Great Movie Ride's new entrance would have been through the hat. On top of that, Mickey has a pointy nose now... (inside joke if you know about the mickey there)

The hat was built for an alternate purpose as well, to take attention away from the Chinese Theater. It seems the area was to be redone. Unfortunately, I believe that entire project fell through... so, that's the hat story. It was never just planned for 100 YoM... it was built to stay for a long, long time.

Also, I hear that when Everest Opens, Disney will have an Animal celebration, and they will change the icon of the AK into a giant Tree Stump... a message to stop the logging and save our animals. Okay, just kidding about the tree stump.

I always thought they should have placed the hat so that it would be on top of Mickey's head. You guys should know what I mean. ;)

Allow me to be the first to say, that I never meant that the Theatre was an official icon. Sorry if you misunderstood what I posted. My reference was what a guest sees when entering one of the parks. In that perspective, the centerpiece of Studios would appear to be the Theatre.

I think this all goes to indicate that Disney was in a hurry to get the park open, before Universal Studios. I mean, really, a water tower with Mickey ears on it as a park icon? Can you picture the gang from WDI standing there on opening day, looking at the Earful Tower, saying "Hey! That water tower just SCREAMS Imagineering at it's finest!" Oh, it is to laugh.

I agree.:)

However I like the hat. It gives the park that little bit of "Disney" that it seems to be missing.

if by "Disney", you mean... cheapening the park by using a character franchise as an icon in order to make millions in merchandising revenue, then I must agree wholeheartedly.

No, I don't like the hat, but yes, I've come to accept it... since it's going to be here for a long LONG time

Disney = not your average business

as sad as it is... at least when Pressler was around, the merchandise was better.. lol.

Oh well... I don't go to the parks to shop.. I go there to have fun, so thanks Rasulo!

duh Rob, but it is still a business none the less and the hat is from a Walt classic so I am sorry but I don't look at things in such a cynical manner as you do

eh.. I just don't like when they do something as an obvious marketing gimmick, but try to hide it under layers of "Disney"

then again, Walt did the EXACT SAME THING when Disneyland first opened... the castle was supposed to be Snow Whites Castle, but it became Sleeping Beauty Castle to promote the movie.

Plus, I think that hat is ugly...

and oh yeah... If I'm cynical, you're brainwashed

Not brainwashed, I understand there is a cynical side to business, but I understand business. If I had a problem with Business I would not be working for the Disney Company. It is a huge company and it is stupid and pointless to attempt to view it under the terms it use to be under when it was small. There are basic values set by Walt. But Walt was no dummy he knew he needed to make money, he even said Mickey was a means to an end. So I choose to be happy and not get all hissy fit over the things I cannot change. I look at the good things they provide and the real reasons they are there and deal with it instead of and moaning and complaining all the time. This is not directed at you personally, I am just explaining.

corporate synergy is both a blessing and a curse for Disney....

yes, use the skills from the different departments to deliver the best product (ie, At a Disney Store Opening, actual theme park characters & performers are there... NOT Disney Store CM's in costumes... and having Disney Theatrical Productions work with WDE and WDI to bring Aladdin to life onstage at DLR)

no, don't crossmarket franchises UNLESS IT CAN BE DONE CORRECTLY (good examples, Pirates of the Caribbean, Buzz Lighyears Space Ranger Spin, and Finding Nemo @ The Living Seas); bad examples, Haunted Mansion, The Country Bears, The Enchanted Tiki Room: Under New Management

and I am very aware of how to run a business Dani... and I also know how to run one into the ground... and the way Disney is being ran nowadays, I can't tell what is being done.

See there ya go, Disney is not perfect, I never claimed it, but forgive me for being a fan in love with Disney and feeling blessed to work there and standing up for it when I feel too many people are criticizing it without real reason. There are many stupid mistakes Disney has made, but oh well, what do you expect when humans run the company?
