Something on top of Epcot monorail station?

A projector is good as the image it's used to project. The projector itself I have no problem with. If anything, I think there's some seriously cool potential in turning Spaceship Earth into a real-time photorealistic revolving globe, a pastiche of different multi-ethnic faces from around the world (like the beautiful Crown fountain in Chicago), projections of famous works of art, maybe even a surface for constantly-streaming, stock ticker-style Twitter updates tagging #Epcot as a tribute to SSE's communication theme. Even futuristic Tron-like lines or effects like having the tiles flip around or switch places would be cool. Those concepts all would have dignity and sense of purpose in Epcot. But that doesn't seem to be what Disney has in mind.

For all the visibility and attention this projection is going to have, it may as well be painted on, at least for guests who will never see Spaceship Earth in its usual nighttime glory.
I think we can probably get off the ledge... It's like when people complained about how bad the concept art for one scene of the Magic Memories and You show made the castle look like a tacky sand castle. This is a projected image on Spaceship Earth, seemingly either for a press event or "at worst" part of a summer promotion. I am far more "offended" by the Jetson's ending then I am a projection on the exterior.

It's truly for a limited engagement though (and seemingly just for a press event). Complaining about this is akin to complaining about the limited time magic offerings as if they too were permanent changes. Spaceship Earth is not being changed to a Monster's Inc attraction and Mike Wazowski will not be the new logo for Epcot.

I don't mind doing something special every once in a while. I think that kids will really find this cool and most adults/teens will find it cool. It fulfills its purpose by hyping the movie during a limited promotional period. Some here will get upset but lets face it the majority of Disney followers/fans/patrons are not like us. I don't want SSE to continuously be advertised but you all KNOW they are doing this in two years and SSE will resemble the death star. I have no issue with either projections if they are short termed and infrequent.

BTW, I am going to guarantee the Star Wars SSE promotion.

If SSE resembled the Death Star to hype the opening of the land at DHS, I would spend a month just taking pictures of SSE. Maybe 2, if they occasionally had tie fighter patrols flying across the surface.

I'm quite familiar with projectors, and I know tacky when I see it.

I mean it's not like Disney has ever done a tacky promotion on their icons before.

It's a (teporary) creative way to advertise one of their properties. I'm perfectly okay with it, especially if you consider some of their other temporary promotions from the past, ala Sorcerer Mickeys hat.

At this point, we can at least hope it's temporary. This is an easier thing to keep around that, say, the dragon,

If it's just for the press event, I'll gladly eat my words. I've done it before. ;) Let's hope that's all it is. Forgive me for having placed my trust in TDO elsewhere, if perhaps prematurely.
It is just for the presser, ahem, marketing event, but that doesn't bug me any less. It's not about the length of the run or the fact it's a temporary...which is a dangerous word when referring to TDO...installation, it's the precedent. Now that they know they can do it, they will repeat it. Hopefully with more care towards the theming, and sparingly.

I agree with this 100%. When I saw the title of this thread I was hoping that it referred to a rare, WDW, Bigfoot sighting.

everyone that has a problem with Disney changing things, attractions, whatever and gets their panties in a wad because of nostalgia reasons will just have to get over it and get use to it. I was like that too.. but the more I think about it, the more Disney has to continue to change... familes and kids are different now, other theme parks are plus'ing their game as well, Disney can't stay stale. Althought I like the "older" WDW, things will always keep changing

Plus'ing is in the eye of the beholder......

I don't think they are plus'ing things where I would want to go (Uni and SeaWorld) but they are starting to get WDW and WDW guests to stand up and pay more attention to them so that should say something

A lot of stuff has been well received. When Captain Jack was added to PotC I did a poll on this site and most liked the addition. In this thread, many like the projection. Some don't like the projection. Some are withholding judgement (I'm in this group) because they want to see how the tech is going to be used on a day to day basis over a longer period of time. I don't see a problem with any of this. I would argue that the perceived staleness of WDW has nothing to do with small scale things like this, regardless of whether or not you like this particular thing.....

I totally agree, and would add that just the thought that someone looked up at the awesome wandless Spaceship Earth and mused..."Gee, how cool would it be to project cartoony characters on this!!" is enough to convince me that they've lost all sense of the heart and soul of EPCOT.

I don't see how anyone can be upset by this projection. It's not going to be there forever and it won't ruin the icon of the park, it's a promotion that won't be there long. I think it's actually very clever and well-executed.
