Solo Trip Report ~ 4/11 - 4/17

Hey Guys...Here's the beginning of my trip report. I'll try to post as much as I can through the weekend. The blog pics can be found at http://www.disneyrevery.wordpress.com. I'll try and update it with other pics that I took with my regular camera as I can.

FRIDAY - Pirate and Princess Party

This trip to the World was a trip of firsts…my first flight to Orlando going to Disney (normally a 10 hour drive), my first solo trip to the World, the first time I used Magical Express, my first time to blog, especially a live photo blog, and the first time I was totally free in the Most Magical Place on Earth! Now, if only I could duplicate these 6 days once a month, life would be GRAND!

I normally make the 10-hour drive from New Orleans to Orlando early the first day of the trip. After all anticipation is half the fun…well, maybe ¼ of the fun. Since this was my first trip solo, I decided to fly and save the time. Great decision! As much as I enjoy driving to Orlando and counting down the miles, a 1 ½ hour flight is a quick bounce from here to there. I touched down at MCO at 5:05 pm and headed to the DME check-in. Once my reservation was found, I was walking down the red carpet, boarding the bus, and ready to go! 20 minutes later I was still ready to go! What was taking so long? Finally, we were off and the trip was quick and painless. Pop Century was the first stop, which was great. I know many people have had gripes with DME, but my experience was very good. Other than the brief delay at the airport (I guess waiting on others scheduled to arrive), I was checking in at Pop Century at 6:15. Time from touchdown to check-in: 1 hour 10 minutes. My luggage was sitting inside the door when I returned to my room later in the night.

After checking in I stopped at the Concierge Desk to pick up my tix for Mickey’s Pirate & Princess Party that night. I figured this was a great way to start the trip and enjoy a relaxing night in the Magic Kingdom. I hit my room, freshened up, and headed out the door. I have to say the bus service from Pop Century was fantastic. There was never another stop at other resorts for pick-ups or drop offs. The only non-stop service that I know Pop Century has from the resort to the parks is Blizzard Beach, which is en route to Animal Kingdom. Within 20 minutes of boarding the bus at Pop, I was walking through the tunnel and entering the world of Pirates and Princesses.

In my opinion this party was awesome! It’s always great to see light crowds in the parks, especially Magic Kingdom, but seeing the crowds virtually non-existent is amazing. After having my moment walking down Main Street and soaking it all in in the Hub, I headed to Adventureland. On my first day at Magic Kingdom, I always tour from left to right. Pirates is always the first attraction and it was no different tonight. I headed down the queue and stopped….did I go down the wrong side? Where is everyone? I walked back up the line and headed down the right queue…and straight to the boat. Again, no one! There were 3 of us in the boat and no one in front or behind us.

As I made my way around the park, I was continually amazed at how light the crowds were. The most I ever stood in line was a “moving” 3 -5 minutes. The lines were non-existent, the streets were sparse with little fighting pirates and flittering princesses, and the weather was beautiful. I stopped in Liberty Square to catch a little of the parade as it rolled by. When I hit Tomorrowland it was time for the fireworks to start. I crossed the bridge back into the Hub and enjoyed the show from a great vantage point. This show is really a great variance of Wishes and the narration is a lot of fun. After the show I headed back to Space Mountain for the first ride of the trip. I love to take the back seat of Space, and CM’s are always so great about accommodating your requests. With the absence of lines I was able to ride several times in a row without ever waiting. At 11:45 I headed back to the bus stop to beat the last minute exit flow and headed home for the night. It was a perfect first night in the World. Next up…Saturday in Animal Kingdom.

I have to agree. I went to WDW on a solo trip in mid-October 2007 and my first ride at Magic Kingdom on a Sunday evening "Mickey's Not so Scary Halloween Party," I had a boat ALL TO MY SELF. And yes, there were two empty boats in front and back of me.

When I got to the end of the ride, the cast member asked if I commandeered the boat and claimed it as my own! Fun stuff. Next time though, there was a small crowd.

And yes, have to agree, solo trips a so sweet. Rock n Roller, Everest and Test Track are quite quick in their single rider lines. Tower of Terror is sort of quick, because when I heard "Do I have any single hotel guests here?," I was 50-100 deep. A moment later, BAM!, I was on an elevator and trimmed about 15-20 minutes off my day.

Saturday – Animal Kingdom

I planned to be at Animal Kingdom at open Saturday morning, but a late night of pirates and princess the night before convinced me to sleep a little late. I arrived to Animal Kingdom about 10:30. Walking in to the gate I ran into the talking palm tree greeting guests as they arrive. They really do a great job with this guy, and he’s as much fun as running into PUSH, the talking trash can, in Magic Kingdom. The crowds were swarmed around him and the kids were mesmerized.

The crowds weren’t too bad but heavy as they usually are trying to get through Discovery Island. I headed straight to Everest to grab a fastpass. The return time was around 01:30, about 2 ½ hours. Asia is my favorite area of all the parks. The development of this “land” is unbelievable and the attention to detail is magnificent. I can spend hours finding new things and grabbing new images and angles with my camera. I decided to grab the next show of Finding Nemo – The Musical and welcomed a cooling off period. The show was great and a lot of fun for everyone. I headed back to the Tree and visited Flick underneath. This show is really great, especially when you’re in it with a large crowd who doesn’t know what to expect. I won’t give it away for those who may not have experienced it for themselves…but when the fog fills the theatre, the screams start! Next was Primeval Whirl and a little time in DinoLand. This is always a fun area to hang out in and watch the joy of the kids.

Time for lunch and I had been anxiously awaiting my time at Yak and Yeti. The restaurant was still under construction during my last visit in October, so I was eager to see the results. The restaurant is beautiful and very authentic in its design. The food is really great and the Cast Members are wonderful as always. Definitely worth trying if you can. After lunch I headed back to Kali River Rapids to cool off again. I had grabbed another fastpass for this some time earlier and the timing was perfect. I got the lucky “dry” seat this time, but I was still wet enough to cool off and it felt nice.

I headed back to Everest and hit the fastpass return line. This has become one of my favorite attractions in Disney. Not just because of the fantastic coaster that it is, but again for the theming and the design. It’s worth being in the regular queue now and then just to explore and see the detail put into it. As I boarded the train I noticed the Single Rider Line was pretty short. So after I deboarded I headed back in to the SRL. After a wait of only 10 minutes, I was boarding again. The regular queue was running about 75 minutes at that point.

After playing with the Yeti, I hit Africa and took a Safari. The ride was great and the animals seemed to really be showing off this day. I guess they were enjoying the beautiful weather also. Parade time was just around the corner so I found a seat along the route and enjoyed some time for people watching. Before I knew it Mickey and friends were Jammin’ the Jungle and the crowd seemed to enjoy it. This parade isn’t as flashy as man of those in Magic Kingdom, but the theming of it is wonderful. Again, the Cast Members really have a great time bringing their characters to life and interacting with the crowd.

At this point I was planning to hit EPCOT for Illuminations so I headed back to Pop to rest awhile and recharge the batteries…the cameras and mine. However, after a short nap and tired legs I decided it wouldn’t happen that night. I was planning to be at the Studios for rope drop without fail the next morning, so I enjoyed some time hanging around the resort. Next up – Sunday morning at the Studios.

I agree a2, the single rider lines are awesome. Also, EMH at the Studios this trip was amazing. I've never seen any park that empty. Of course it was heavier down Sunset around RnRC and ToT, but the other areas were deserted. Around midnight you could go back and forth between RnRC and ToT and walk directly on. It was fantastic!

Can't wait for the rest, and agree about EE being so well themed that I don't mind waiting.

EMH pm's are the best, aren't they?

Sunday – Studios and EPCOT

Sunday morning I was at the Studios about 8:30 for rope drop. The crowds were already heavy down Hollywood Boulevard. At rope drop the crowds made the usual mad dash down Sunset Boulevard for RnRC and ToT. I grabbed a fastpass for ToT and headed over to RnRC. Unfortunately, it was delayed opening due to technical issues. Within about 10 minutes it was up and running. In the mean time I headed back to ToT and waited in the regular queue. It only took about 10 minutes to get through and it was as thrilling as always. It’s always great to be on this ride with those who haven’t experienced it before. Everyone’s reactions to when they think they are going to fall is hysterical…especially when it’s at the first elevator stop.

I hit RnRC in the Single Rider Line and walked straight into the sound booth. I was loaded and on the coaster in less than 5 minutes. Single Rider Lines are wonderful. I was even able to ride it again, and I was finished again in less than 10 minutes. 2 rides of RnRC first thing in the morning within 20 minutes! I headed to the rest of the park after this time and hit Star Tours and Muppets. Muppets is a personal favorite of mine, and I always find it fun. This area also has a lot of fun theming that is often overlooked due to the lack of lines. Be sure to check out the old queue area of Muppets that used to be used when this was a major attraction. The Power Rangers were out on the streets of New York doing their thing. Lots of little, and not so little, kids hovering around and showing off their Power Rangers moves. I checked out the PIXAR place area but the walls are still high enough that you can’t see much more than the skyline.

After a little browsing and photography in the backlot area, it was time for my ToT fastpass. As I headed back to the front of the park the dark clouds began to open and the rain began to fall. At first I thought it would pass over, but by the time I was back to Sunset it was setting in and raining heavy. I hit the fastpass line of ToT and headed back to Pop around 2pm.

I spent a few hours at Pop resting and recharging batteries again as the rain continued. The temp began to drop as the rain passed through, and I had made the trip with one pair of jeans and one long-sleeve shirt. So, I hit up the gift shop for a jacket/poncho that came in quite handy for the rest of the trip.

I planned to catch Illuminations for the night, so I headed to EPCOT around 6pm. The topiaries for the Flower and Garden Festival are really great this year. They are scattered through the park, and they serve as great subjects for photos. I wandered through a few of these as I made my way to Mission: Space. I grabbed a fastpass for an hour away and headed over to Universe of Energy. I have to admit this is the first time I have taken the time to ride this since 1994, but the update with Ellen is really great. I really enjoyed spending time in here. I headed back to Mission: Space (Orange Line) and then hit Spaceship Earth to check out the refurb.

The updating of this attraction is nice. Dame Judi Dench is a personal favorite of mine, and I thought she adds a great aspect to the ride. It’s also a lot of fun choosing your future at the end of the ride and watching the cartoon. Everyone gets a kick out of seeing their faces on the globe when you exit the ride, and it’s truly amazing to see the vast area of the world that is covered by visitors just in the time you are on the ride. My picture didn’t capture during this ride, so I had to wait a few days before I got to email my Greetings From The Future postcard home.

The sun had set and I began to wander through World Showcase killing time until Illuminations. I always enjoy taking the time to check out each pavilion and discover everything hidden within each land. This is another opportunity I don’t often get when traveling with others, so I made the most of being there alone. I grabbed some sushi in Japan and then headed back towards the American Pavilion for Illuminations. Nothing better than enjoying this spectacular show with a funnel cake in your hand…and that’s what I did! As the fireworks ended the masses headed for the front gate. The wait for the bus was the longest I had the entire trip. It took nearly 45 minutes to finally clear through the crowds and make it onto a bus. I made it an early night since I knew the next would be late. Next up…Monday morning back at Animal Kingdom.

Monday – Animal Kingdom and the Studios (Twice)

Monday morning I headed back to Animal Kingdom. This park has become one of my favorites, and I really enjoy spending a lot of time here. There is so much to see and enjoy that it makes for a great leisure day. I spent most of the day just strolling through the park and taking pictures. I also hit Dinosaur! since I hadn’t been through it, yet. The Single Rider Line for Everest was a little longer this day. It took about 40 minutes to get through the line. It appeared there were several large high school groups hitting the parks for the day.

Around 2pm I headed over to the Studios to catch Block Party Bash. I was looking forward to seeing this at the Studios since it had been in the works for so long. I found a spot up on a planter directly across from the Emmy courtyard. This location turned out to be a great spot as the float with Woody and Buzz stopped directly in front of us during the second parade stop. The energy of this parade is through the roof. Cast Members have the smaller children in the streets playing games as they wait on the parade to reach them on the route. As the parade moves through, it’s non-stop dancing, cheering, and fun. The CM’s really get the crowd involved and the floats are bright and animated. It’s great to see new characters taking a large role in a major parade. Block Party Bash is a great beginning for the new PIXAR additions taking place in the Studios.

After the parade I spent some time in the Walt Disney museum. This exhibit is a great piece of history for park enthusiasts to enjoy. After the documentary movie was over, I hit the single rider line in RnRC (my new found friend) before heading back to Pop around 5pm. Around 8:30pm I headed back to the Studios to catch the 10pm Fantasmic! and evening EMH. After the show I grabbed my EMH bracelet and headed towards the back of the park as the crowds emptied through the front. This was the first time I had taken advantage of EMH at the Studios. The back half of the park was completely deserted! I was walking along the Streets of New York completely alone, and at one point I started questioning if I should be back there! It was unbelievable to think that I was wandering alone in a Disney park with not one other person in sight….it was a little surreal. Now, if only I could pull that off in Magic Kingdom! I browsed around Mama Melrose and the Muppets shop. The two CM’s working in the gift shop were standing out on the sidewalk looking for guests, and I spent quite awhile talking with them. I love the rare opportunities that you have to really engage in a real conversation with CM’s.

The night was beautiful and a little cool. I headed back down Sunset Boulevard and the street was sparse with people. I hit the big 2 a few more times while the crowds were low. I can’t say that I waited in line for either ride. There were quite a few people riding ToT for the first time on each ride, and that always makes it more fun than it already is. Around 12:45 I headed out the front gates and back to Pop for the night. Up next…a full day in the Magic Kingdom.

Sorry for the long delay...this was one of those weeks at work. Definitely settling back in to the real world.

Tuesday - Magic Kingdom

I spent all day Tuesday at Magic Kingdom. As much as I like to park hop, I always like to spend one full day in MK. I have to say this was the perfect day for it! The weather was beautiful, the skies were clear, the temp was a little cold, and the crowds were fair.

I got to MK shortly after opening and caught the first train ride for the day. I exited at Frontierland and walked directly on Splash. Odd that there was not one single person in the queue....reason: I got off 10 minutes later soaked (I got the wet ride) and the temp was 53 degrees! I'm not sure if this is fact, but it seems like Splash got a little splashier lately. :) So, this was my only ride of the day through the Laughing Place.

I hit BTMR again with a minimal wait. This really was a perfect day in every way. It was one of those days when you really appreciate the beauty of where you are. I spent most of the day just leisurely wandering through the park, catching rides, and snapping photos. In Tomorrowland I ran into PUSH, the talking trashcan, and he was entertaining the crowd as thoroughly as always. The skies were completely clear and the Magic seemed to be in high effect this day.

After catching a showing of PhilHarmagic, I headed to the hub for the DDCT parade. I had a great spot at the front of the hub with some small children sitting in front of me. After the parade was over, I left to run back to Pop for the usual routine...charge batteries. Constantly posting pictures from my iPhone to the blog site as I took them drained the battery. So I usually had to recharge mid-afternoon.

I headed back to MK around 7pm. I spent a little time in Toontown Fair which is always fun. This area is especially fun around dusk. I caught a ride on Barnstormer...one of my personal faves, even if it is a "kids" coaster. It packs a little punch! Crowds were pretty light for the evening, so ride lines weren't too bad...prob 30 minutes at the most. As 10pm approached I headed to the rose garden to catch Wishes! This is a great spot for the fireworks if you aren't determined to be dead center of the castle. Often times the garden is nearly empty, and it's a great vantage point for the show.

Between 10 and 11 I caught another ride or two on Space and people watched in the Hub. There's nothing better than sitting there late at night, watching the crowds head out, and admiring the beauty of Cindy's castle at night. Just another one of those moments....you either get it or people just think you're very strange. I browsed the Emporium around 11 as the crowds headed out and picked up a few things to bring home. I walked back to the Hub for the Goodnight Kiss and then headed out for the evening. I got back to Pop around midnight and called it a night. Next up...last day of park and World hopping.

I've posted several pics after I returned home, and I hope to continue updating them periodically.

Wednesday - Park and World Hopping

My last day in the World was nonstop. I planned to hit a few things I hadn't made it too, yet...and I took full advantage of being solo. This is when you don't have time to be waiting on someone else! :animwink:

I started the day at EPCOT. I hadn't yet hit Soarin', and I knew the lines would be long. I hit the fastpass kiosk at 9:45 and my return time was 1:30. I decided to head through Journey Into Imagination and Honey, I Shrunk the Audience..both of which I hadn't done in quite a long time. The line for Nemo was pretty long, so I headed back over to SSE and decided to check it out again. The line took about 30 minutes, but this line always seems to move. My picture captured this time around, and I was able to email my Greetings From The Future postcard back home.

I still had about 2 hours to kill before my Soarin' return time, so I jumped on the monorail for the MK. At the TTC I transferred to the resort line and hopped back off at the Polynesian. I spent a little time enjoying the grounds of the Poly and sat on the beach for a few minutes overlooking the lagoon and Cindy's castle. This is one of the most relaxing places in all the World...and the world. I walked back over to the TTC and boarded the ferry to cross the water. The wind was quite cool on the water and standing on top deck was almost too much. By the time I made it to the turnstiles it was only 30 minutes until Soarin' time. So, I boarded the monorail, hit the TTC, transferred to the EPCOT line, and headed back in that direction.

Soarin' was as awesome as always. This is such an amazing ride. I took the time to eat in The Land while I was there, and I had the rotisserie chicken from The Grill...tasty. By this time I was trying to finalize my plans for the remainder of the evening. I knew what I truly wanted to do...so I just jumped right in.

I headed back to Pop (usual reason), bought tix for the Pirate & Princess Party for the night, and headed on the bus for the Studios. I arrived at the Studios around 4:30. I have to say that this trip really opened my eyes to this park and a new love was born. I'm not sure if it was the late night rendezvous alone in the back half of the park, or just a new appreciation for what it has to offer, but my perspective has definitely changed. I hit the SRL of RnRC (of course) and made it completely through the building in less than 15 minutes. I grabbed some ice cream (Mint Chocolate Chip & Butter Pecan) and headed towards the backlot. As I was headed for the BL Tour, I caught Mater heading backstage from a Meet and Greet. I joined the queue for BL Tour and enjoyed the backlot sights.

Time check: 6:30pm. The last evening was quickly coming to a close. Only a few hours and this wonderful experience would be over. I knew I had to end it the best way possible, so I jumped on the bus and headed to MK....one last night of Pirates and Princesses to end this visit.....

Last Few Hours - Pirate and Princess Party (The Repeat)

I decided the best way to end my last few hours was in MK. What better way to spend time here than when the crowds are at a bare minimum? I have to say I never really had any thoughts or intentions of attending this party, but I ended up going twice in one trip. The ambiance of the park alone is worth it.

I walked into the park around 7:30 and the crowds of the day had already cleared out significantly. It's such a great feeling to be heading in through the masses as everyone else is making a mad dash out. I spent the night as usual strolling through the park and just enjoying the sights. The crowds were pretty equivalent to the last PPP 5 nights before. I hit BTMR, Haunted Mansion, Pirates, Space, and even Winnie The Pooh with no wait. There was plenty of time to just enjoy watching the kids and appreciating the evening without rushing from one place to the other. As the parade started, the other areas of the park were deserted. I enjoyed a few rides on Space and then boarded the TTA and watched part of the parade while hovering over Tomorrowland. As the time approached for the fireworks to begin, I grabbed a hot dog from Casey's Corner, plopped down in the middle of the hub, and wondered if life could be any better.

Around 11pm I knew the time had come to say goodbye and head back home. After a few last minutes on Main Street, I headed toward the tunnels and turned around to grab one last glimpse...one last breath of the Magic to take home until the next time (thankfully only December).

I arrived back at Pop around midnight. My flight out was at 7:15 am, so I finished packing and headed to bed around 12:30. The alarm came far to quickly at 4:30 for a 5:15 departure to the airport. The security lines weren't too bad this morning, and I made it through pretty quickly. At 7:15 my plane departed and I headed back to the real world. I spent 1 hour and 45 minutes listening to the latest Inside the Magic podcast on my iPhone as I prepped myself for the return to reality. At 8am I landed in New Orleans, and I was home in an hour. By 10:30 I was sitting back in my office at the hospital....a stark contrast to just 12 hours earlier!

And so the countdown began all over....232 long days to go (thankfully only 220 now! :sohappy: ). Another amazing trip to the World was over, and it was perhaps the most amazing trip I've ever had.
