Soarin's Editing

I just would like to vent about Soarin's editing. It's the one thing that irritates me thru the entire attraction. Could they not have just lifted back to the sky for a ride thru the the clouds to go to the next scene instead of an out of nowhere jump cut to the next area..The rest of the attraction is fine it's just that part I'm not a fan of...

Until I saw this....Apparently Busch Gardens Williamsburg has a similar Soarin Knock-off called "Europe in The Air" while it doesn't utilize a Hang gliding simulation feel but more of a Standard simulator. This one at least Was edited better than Soarin with tree, clouds and fog wipes to make it much smoother than a jump cut.

I hate Soarin and this is the the main reason why I do. Jump cutting is just lazy and looks terrible.oh and the sped up LA scene which then cuts to a slow flight over Disneyland. It doesn't work.

What Soarin needs is brand new HD digital films of several different continents which are randomised so you have a chance to see somewhere different every time you ride. 3D should also be implemented however the movement of the seats may make this impoossible unless Disney create a tilting screen or something that matches the movement of the seats.

I don't think cutting with clouds is feasible in the short time span between scenes, considering many of the scenes are close to ground level, it would take several seconds to float up to the cloud line just for a scene cut. While I agree the abrupt scene cuts are annoying, I don't see any other way to do them in the short period allotted by the score.

Honestly they need to do a new film in digital format and have it in full 4K HD. The existing video is too grainy and seems to have deteriorated over time and has tons of dust motes and scratches on it now. Its the 21st century for crying out loud, its time for an update already.

It wouldn't have to be more than two seconds, make it brief and fast.

Well, given the fact that several scenes are directly at ground level (not to mention with clear skies), flying up to the cloud line would take a good 10-15 seconds or more, unless you sped up the flight speed to accommodate. But I think would be even more annoying than the random scene cuts.

Not saying it couldn't be done for several of the scenes, but a bunch of them are so low to the ground that taking a sudden upward flight into the clouds would seem awkward.

I really enjoyed that clip....but there were parts of it when it panned left, right, up, down that I think would bother me if I was on the simulator....

Soarin' is one of my favorite rides, but like you said the transitions are a bit abrupt, but I forgive them that while I enjoy the rest of the scenery...

But I would love to have different movies so that you don't know which one you are getting. It would be great to see some great Americana scenes, maybe the seven wonders of the world, historic Europe, or maybe even an around the world in five minutes type thing.... one can hope!

The editing is what makes it less than an E. That and Orlandos dust.

And pleeeese.... Slow down the nighttime LA shot. It's so sped up its comical.

There's nothing to see.

Cows, flat fields, more cows, more flat fields, a beach, cruise ships, flat fields, everglades, cows, fields, Duval Street (bars in Key West), fields, cows, bars in Miami, cows, cows, fields, Disney World.

;)
Aw... what about Gatorland, Weechee Wacheee mermaids, old Cypress Gardens, Silver Springs glass bottom boats, riding a "fan boat" in the Everglades, highway A1A scenic, Daytona 500 Speedway, Marineland ( if it's still there?), Sea World, Universal Studios, Legoland, Busch Gardens Tampa Bay, palm trees, oranges, etc...etc..etc...
I love Florida!:D

Everglades, many of the natural springs around the area, Sunshine Skyway Bridge, Kennedy Space Center, the crystal white sands of the panhandle, etc

I think there is enough natural beauty and man made attractions in Florida to make a great film.

I agree, and I've hated that about Soarin' since the first time I rode it. That, the fact that its strictly California scenes in a WDW park, the lack of any fictional setting or narrative or setup found in all of Disney's best E-tickets, the fact that the seats barely move at all, and that you only get an un-obstructed view in the first row make me really baffled by Soarin's insane popularity at Epcot.

Quickly pulling up into the clouds wouldn't make sense since you're in a hang glider and they can only glide and make subtle movements, but they definitely could have edited some clouds that form and whisp away, revealing the new location.

Everyone mentions that WDW's Soarin' has dust spots and DCA's does not, but I felt that DCA's looked exactly the same when I finally got to ride a few months ago. Definitely saw dust spots.

Yes, yes and yes. I watched the ride video and counted: you would need to add 12 transitions. Even if you could do each one in five seconds (I think that's the ABSOLUTE minimum), you're adding a full minute to each ride cycle. That's knocking at least one ride cycle/175 riders per hour off of the THRC... that's 2,100 fewer riders accomodated in a 12 hour operating day. And that's before you even tackle the question of whether or not you can make transitions like this work. Shooting up to the cloud line every 25 seconds would feel weird contrasted with the generally peaceful movement of the rest of the scenes. Or having a CGI cloud drift in out of nowhere, or some random tree branch cut across the screen... I think it would get old fast. Real fast. I'm not saying the ride film is perfect (just don't say anything bad about the music around me!), but I think the jump cuts are effective.

I don't hate the jump cuts, I just would prefer a better transition. But what I really want is Soarin over the world or over Florida or anything but California. Why california? It's across the country! It works find with DCA, since its in California obviously. But Epcot, in Florida? Nah
