Soarin' Over the World: My Review...One World: Unacceptable

When did you notice the Eiffel Tower or Taj Mahal on the original Soarin? Just sayin! Remember the words... Location, Location, Location. It would probably take some massive surgery on one's optic nerves to fix that problem.
They really need to rethink the Eiffel Tower shot. It looks like a banana for 2/3 of a full load.

I didn't expect to hear laughing from guests.

That and the Taj are problematic. The rest wasn't as nearly as bad as I'd feared. Perhaps a little too much cgi but not disastrously so.

I don't necessarily disagree, but, I have yet to hear a credible solution to that problem. Many saying... "they should fix it, after all they are leaders in the film industry", yet, no one has said how that kind of thing is fixed. I don't think it is wonderful to have the distortion there, but I also don't know what can be done about it other then to just not have the Eiffel Tower or the Taj in the film at all. Some say lenses, some say screen shape, they do not say what negative things may happen to the rest of the show by changing either one of those. If, as mentioned, that problem doesn't exist in DCA, then, I agree, why is it that way in Florida? Barometric pressure? Hurricane winds bending the structures? I don't know! I do know that in my own mind it is a minor distraction to an otherwise impressive new show. If they can fix it then they need to do so. If they can't, make believe some Marvel super hero bent them while trying to stamp out evil. Why not include another IP in Epcot via imagination? It's just like the old Epcot. ;)

I liked the original because everything in it was real and it felt as if you were actually flying over california. The newer version is just shorter with CGI it seems like it was done too quick with no thought. It wouldve been really nice if they just re-did it to a Florida version.

I just timed them on Youtube videos, they are almost exactly the same length.

Re render the shot not as close to the tower. It really is farcical compared to the rest of the movie and the previous version.

Yeah. I re-watched the original Soarin on YouTube. There is nothing that tall in any of the scenes. You might see a little bending off to the side but nothing really glaring.

Well, phallic symbols are always difficult to photograph for a curved screen. Perhaps, a shot of Viagra would help.:joyfull: I'm not sure that the distance away would result in anything but a smaller distortion. Film (or digital) does not see and interpret like the eye and the brain in reality.

Someone here said they didn't notice the distortion at DCA's new version of Soarin'. Is it possible the projection lenses and/or technologies are different? Are all Disney Parks that are running Soarin' worldwide using identical projectors, or did WDW opt to use a different system or not upgrade? Idle speculation but would love to know more.

In that case they have a real issue then.

Banana.

Does Disney know about 'shrinkage'? Maybe the tower was in the pool.

Goodness....now my focus will be on analyzing tower distortion and where I sit. o_O BUT some folks have said they found it awesome so will have to see for self.....already missing the orange scent.....;). Aren't there now 3 theatres? Has anyone critical of the distortion evaluated all 3? Hoping its not a attraction distraction enough to make Epcot a 1/2 day park for me.....like DHS.....Maybe I should have booked my FP for AFTER we go through the Food and Wine Festival.....then all distortion could possibly be attributed to something else....:D.

Edit: Meant to say "Around" the World, but can't edit.

I just got back from a wonderful 8 day trip at WDW and had a wonderful time. We were excited to ride Soarin' Around the World as we are not used to seeing new attractions because of the frequency of our trips to the World.

I could sit here and comment on the good things, what they got right: A beautiful score, retaining of Patrick as the chief flight attendant, gorgeous images from all over the world, great audio, and even a cleaned up image. But I can't.

I can't get over something I'm know has been discussed here extensively:

The image issues. The Eiffel Tower and Taj Mahal are distorted and appear crooked. Not just slightly either....It's as if they are bent dramatically. It ruins the ride and is unacceptable. I was sitting on the right side, top row. It looks absolutely awful. In my estimation, the ride should be taken down and not re-opened until it's fixed. In fact, it should have never been opened like that in the first place.

I read a little about it, but I am absolutely stunned it's this bad and was pushed out in spite of being so blatantly obvious. HOW could they think this is "fine" or acceptable???

Sidenote: The CGI "Shtick" is absolutely ridiculous too and should have never made it through. I could forgive all of that if the images were representative of their actual appearance.

Absolutely devastated and disappointed Disney allowed this to happen. Shame on them and a real blow to what could have been a wonderful update to a favorite.

Iger's leadership has been absolutely devastating to WDW in particular and I am genuinely afraid of what we'll see when the "good enough" box is checked for our remaining projects in process (Avatar, Star Wars, Pixar, and whatever at EPCOT).

It was some consolation to see the images look fine when viewing from the center.

We've ridden the old version of Soar'n more times than I can count, the original in DL and the one in EPCOT and the reality is you only get a really good view without distortion if you are in the center section. You get on the fringes and the images are all distorted you simply don't notice it and probably never noticed it in the original because if you aren't looking at straight lines of a building it isn't that noticeable... No reason to do anything with it or about it... In the future just keep riding it and eventually you will get the center section and you'll get a perfect view.

And once again you have proved to be a man with no limits to your expertise. It's absolutely amazing that you have time to post here with all of your many professions.

Classy attack the messenger when you don't like the message,

Photography is my hobby and it has been since 5'th grade, Engineering is what I do for a living and I do it at the architecture level so I'm required to understand multiple disciplines might also explain why I have to spend 4 figures on reference books every year too not to mention about the same amount on licensure and certification fees and memberships in professional organizations.

And gee those people paying me might also explain why I was able to buy lots and lots of DVC points and USED to visit Disney multiple times per year, It also explains why I'm so intolerant of Disney's constant screwups because you are not ALLOWED to be wrong in engineering at the professional level.

The close up shot of the Eiffel Tower was an oops, I would have told them to redo that sequence with a much wider shot. I don't really know what they were thinking other than someone said hey this is cool type deal. But whatever its not end of the world.
