Soarin' movie to change to a global theme?

CMs seem to always be the last to know. We really don't have any idea on any changes that could be coming. Frankly the attraction is so popular as is I can't see them changing the film yet. I also agree with the score comments, I hear that music MANY times every day and I still love it. You must keep in mind all of the changes that would be required in swapping the film. Scents would have to be changed, motion would have to be re-programmed, a new score would have to be written/adapted.
I can't see it happening soon as the attraction has yet to go down since it opened. They even routed the fastpass through the exit while replacing the floors in the gates.

I would FLIP OUT if they developed a 3-D digital projector for Soarin'!

Is 3D OMNIMAX even possible? I'd think you would have issues to the sides as the screen curved...

I'd just be happy with a digital 2D projection. From the advances they've made in digital projection, I'd guess that it's perhaps 5 years away. (And I'd hope that Disney would want to be among the first to obtain such a system)

3D would really take Soarin to the next level...and not to have crap flying in your face the whole ride, just to add depth. Just look at the ending of Spidey and how immersive it is. They really should have planned for 3D from the start. Regardless, I agree with those saying it is a ways off. I could see them milking 10+ years out of this film before replacing it. There is just no need to do anything right now with the longest lines at Epcot already.

There are two problems with using stock IMAX footage in Soarin':

First, the footage would need to be in OMNIMAX format, and not the standard IMAX flat-screen format.

And the more limiting reason, even if they got stock OMNIMAX footage, Soarin's OMNIMAX screen is *upside-down* from how all other OMNIMAX screens are presented. All other OMNIMAX theaters the screen curves up and over the audience, not down and under.
And due to the way the image is filmed (via a distorted lens), there's no way of simply turning the film over to make it right-side-up. (And that also means Soarin's film could never be shown in a "normal" OMNIMAX theater) Soarin's film footage has to specifically be shot for the attraction.

Nice post...very informative! So, it sounds like digital IMAX is here, but is digital OMNIMAX in the works? Or possibly 3D OMNIMAX?

Remember though, it'd have to be digital OMNIMAX in HD and in "upside down" mode...

Having said that, it's hard to imagine that it's not in the works...but I honestly have no clue.

I am pretty sure James Cameron is working on such technologies (and Lucas too I am sure) so stay tuned. With computer manipulation of the image possible now I think it will be sooner than people think.:sohappy:

They do scents for the ride? I rode it and had zero scents, and I have a pretty good olfactory system! Maybe that would have made the ride better, because I thought it was a letdown.

Sure, a 3-D Soarin' sounds nice: But you have to think operationally. (Marty)

Everyday the screen would get flooded with people and small children throwing their glasses down onto the screen. It would be a huge unsolvable problem to face if they were ever to make it a 3-D Attraction.

2013? It's going to take them 5 years to change it over?

Let's hope it's sooner.
Actually I was wondering if they could do something like the Tower of Terror now does and have some random operation to make it more interesting. Like maybe 2 or 3 different scenarios and the riders don't know which one is coming up.

:)

If/when they perfect a digital projection system for OMNIMAX, I could definitely see random trips on Soarin' as a possibility. But until that time, it'd be very difficult to do so, unless they made one long loop of film, and just ran each version in a set sequence and then started over again.

hate to burst some peoples bubbles but its not going to be Soarin' Over the World. I am 100% sure that it will be Soarin' Over America. I know one cast member with whom I worked with who works there that confirmed it along with a very high up person who is over alot of the computer work for the whole resort who confirmed it. From what I was also told is that the info was included in the cast member news paper that Walt Disney World puts out. Soarin Over America would be better then Soarin Over the World since not everyone who visits the USA gets to see all the sights such as the Grand Canyon or the Statue of Liberty. From what Ive been told is that the filming for Soarin' Over America has already started and it could be ready as early at 2010.

I don't like this idea. Imagine you go there and every time you wait 45 minutes to see Soarin you get stuck with the film you watched last trip. With Tower of Terror it is the same core experience. With Soarin if they didn't give you a choice of films and randomly stuck you with one I think people would get frustrated.
