Two projects were going on concurrently at Disneyland, first was a retheme of Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters to coincide with the upcoming Lightyear movie that would extend the indoor queue and the Monorail being rerouted for a future Fantasyland project. Both of these projects would be beneficial to finally hide the back of the Astro Blasters show building with something aesthetically pleasing. The Go Away Green would Go Away to make way for a new Swiss village that would perfectly compliment it’s neighbor, the Matterhorn.

Guests cross a new bridge over a lake that connects to the main moat and make it to a Swiss Village that borders the nearby famous Matterhorn Mountain. Replacing what used to be Pixie Hollow are A-Scent of Pretzels, a bakery that focuses on selling pretzels (duh!) with various topping options to choose from, and Disneyland’s new premier art gallery which we’ll get back to later. Closer to the Submarine Voyage on the back of the Lightyear show building are various Swiss house facades which can be used for streetmosphere performers who often tell tales about the Yeti who lives in the Matterhorn or for a Meet and Greet of Disney’s Storybook characters who often stop by here on their way to the heart of Fantasyland. Galerie Der Alps in German (the most spoken language in Switzerland) translates to the Gallery of the Alps. Which very much describes this shop’s purpose quite swiftly: an art gallery that will show off the artistry of both Disney’s animated tales and Disneyland itself for the first time in Fantasyland while being located close to Disney’s sole Matterhorn. But before getting ahead of ourselves let’s start with the exterior:

The exterior for Galerie Der Alps can be best summarized as an Old World style that is especially influenced by 15th/16th century Swiss and Bavarian architecture. A tile roof is located on top of walls decorated with classic styled timbering and plenty of windows as one would need on a building without any electric lights inside. The part of the building located closer to A-Scent of Pretzels is wide and stout, it’s reminiscent of a public house or inn and is where the main entrance is located. While the taller, slimer part serves as a clocktower for the village with a weathervane on top of the structure that has a decorative piece topping it off designed like the Matterhorn yeti. The tower itself was built on top of an even older structure which now is it’s base as can be seen through its wear and tear and completely different architectural style than the rest of the building.

After entering through the entrance, guests will find themselves inside this grand gallery shop. The interior of the store itself is not luxurious or modern but it is charming and makes the art stand out even more. Flowers and animals that you would find in Switzerland are painted on the walls with the grandest painting being behind the cashier’s stand, a painting of the famous Matterhorn mountain and it’s reflection in a nearby lake. Throughout the stores on top of the shelves are pieces of half finished art of the natural sights outside created by the proprietor of the shop before he decided to go into the business side of art instead, that man’s artistic side is also present in the hand-made wooden carved furniture seen throughout the entire store that is covered with aesthetically pleasing flourishes.

The store itself is split into two with the front focusing mainly on Disney sculptures along with special model kits that allow guests to rebuild some of the most treasured Disneyland landmarks (obviously when they get back home). And the back of the store focuses on artwork such as painting, posters and other similar collectables along with having an active artist who will create hand-made animation cels that once finished are available to guests for purchase!. Disney books and pins are also present midway through the store along with a shelf near the cashier stand that stocks the newest Disney Funko Pops for those collectors out there!

In conclusion, the addition of Galerie Der Alps adds a fine specialty store to Fantasyland while also strengthening the new Switzerland mini-land that gives the Matterhorn it’s own little corner while also beautifying what was previously just green walls and a meet and greet area that felt detached from everything else around it. Now onward to the main season of So You Want To Be an Imagineer Season 19!

That looks to be an excellent project! However, it won’t be nominated to win in this competition. Our team’s project (remember not to say what it is in front of everybody) is the one we’re all working on and that will most definitely win first place.
