Astro Boy: Flights of Fancy (Elevator pitch)

Back-story: Universal loses the rights to the Marvel characters, The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man: The Ride has to go, Universal Japan chooses a Japanese property over a Universal property to replace it, they go for Astro Boy in honor of the original anime's upcoming 60th anniversary (I promise, I have an elaborate back-story where there are legitimate reasons for all of these things happening).

The technical stuff: Utilizes the Kuka arm technology seen in Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, though due to space constraints on a smaller and more intimate scale. Each car fits four people, two facing forwards and two facing backwards. Utilizes projection screens with a few animatronics.

The queue: Takes place in the Ministry of Science building. Features a preshow with Professor Ochanomizu, who explains Astro Boy's backstory.

The ride: Guests board jet packs "outside" the back of the building to go flying with Astro Boy. Along the way they encounter Astro Boy's siblings Uran and Cobalt, his friends Higeoyaji, Chief Nakamura, Shibugaki and Tamao, and enemies Bora, Kim Sankaku, Ham Egg and Pluto. After helping him defeat them Astro Boy thanks the guests, and they disembark back into Universal Japan.

Ah, Pokemon. Based upon the video game series, Pokemon has become one of the cornerstones of anime. Who hasn't dreamed of joining Ash Ketchum on his lifelong quest to become a Pokemon Master? Well, with this new addition, set to be part of Super Nintendo World at Universal Orlando, that dream can come true! Welcome one and all to the cleverly-named: Pokemon: Gotta Catch 'Em All!

Nintendo_USF_AreaMap3.jpg

As we all know, Super Nintendo World is set to replace Woody Woodpecker's KidZone at Universal Orlando, with the only survivors bring SpongeBob StorePants and E.T. Adventure (because if they close down the Orlando E.T., Spielberg won't work with them in theme parks again). Once inside this ambitious new land, you'll be thrust into the worlds of Mario, Luigi, Peach, Yoshi and Donkey Kong. But what about Pokemon? Well, that's where Gotta Catch 'Em All comes in. This attraction, filling in the gray space on the map above, is set to bring a whole new level of immersion into an already immersion-heavy park! There have been rumors that Disney is planning on utilizing a unique technology for a non-Floridian Marvel ride that allows you to throw Captain America's shield at bad guys and have it boomerang back. Eager to capitalize on the technology before Disney unveils it, Universal is "plussing" it to another level.

season02_ep29_ss01.jpg

The adventure begins at Professor Oak's laboratory. You're supposed to be here to get a first-hand look at how Pokemon are trained and cared for...but alas, it wouldn't be a theme park ride without something going wrong. In this case, the notorious Team Rocket--Jessie, James and Meowth--have finally stolen every single kind of Pokemon! Oak sends us out in special Poke-mobiles throughout the city to retrieve them all. Remember that technology I mentioned? Well, while Team Rocket is distracted, you'll be throwing Pokeballs at all their ill-got Pokemon, retrieving them from their evil clutches. And you won't be alone in this. You've got Ash, Misty and Brock at your side, with Pikachu, Togepi, Charmander, Squirtle and Bulbasaur in tow.

So, you go through the city, saving Pokemon and trying to avoid Team Rocket's clutches. But alas, it's not over yet. Once you catch them all, you find yourself in Team Rocket's headquarters, doing battle with Team Rocket's fearsome leader, Giovanni! Each car has its own special Pokemon that you can use to fight Giovanni. By using a control pad on the Poke-mobile, you can select an attack for your Pokemon to do to knock Giovanni out and flee. As you leave the headquarters, you see Pikachu push a "self-destruct" button, and as you head out, you notice a projection on the wall, and hear a very familiar catchphrase...

With all the Pokemon safe, you return to the laboratory, where Professor Oak and Ash dub us all honorary Pokemon Masters! You exit the Poke-mobiles and head into a gift shop, themed around all those tacky museum gift shops. In a vein similar to the Banshees of Pandora, you can adopt your very own Pokemon, choosing from one of the many popular types.

And there we have it--Pokemon: Gotta Catch 'Em All!, Universal's hottest new E-ticket; sure to be the cornerstone of Super Nintendo World!

Unfortunately I was called into work early, so I won't have time to do feedback before leaving. I'll try to get to feedback after work but due to the podcast schedule it might have to be as late as tomorrow morning. Apologies all around for that. In the meantime, here's the prompt for the semi finals project.

Season 17, Semi Finals: El Grupo Adventures

Walt%20%26%20El%20Grupo%20608x373.jpg

Adventures By Disney is a growing branch of the company and its travel division that has never really been touched on with Armchair Imagineering...until now! In keeping with the theme of international excursions and to insert a bit of Disney history into the mix, in this project your goal will be to recreate the famous South America trip Walt Disney took with a group of animators during WWII that famously resulted in The Three Caballeros, Saludos Amigos, and perhaps most importantly Mary Blair developing her signature style. You must do research into what an Adventures By Disney vacation entails and apply that to a vacation themed around this important trip that shaped Disney history. This is probably the most difficult and research intensive project the whole season, so because of that I'm going to be doing away with the tier system for a round to have everybody on the same playing field. At the end of this round, everyone's top three project scores will be combined and the three people with the highest scores will move on to compete head to head in the final project. Good luck everyone. This project is due Sunday, August 12th at 11:59PM Eastern.

A good research starting point!

2021/2022: Brazil, Argentina, Chile

Background
full_saludosamigos_913__31803.1512009751.1280.1280.jpg

In honor of the 80th anniversary of the 10-week trip that Walt Disney and the rest of the El Grupo took to South America in a period of Nazi escalation in World War II, for the 50th Anniversary global celebration of Walt Disney World, Adventures by Disney will see a South American expansion tour that attempts to replicate some of the Southern Hemisphere highlights of that cultural excursion.

El Grupo
Walt Disney, Lillian Disney, Bill Cottrell, Hanzell Cottrell, John Rose, Janet Matrin Lansburgh, Jack Cutting, Norm Ferguson, Ted Sears, Webb Smith, Herb Ryman, Jim Bodrero, Jack Miller, Lee Blair, Mary Blair, Frank Thomas (not the MLB player), Chuck Wolcott, Larry Lansburgh

While the 10-week expedition is not financially or accessibly feasible for Adventures by Disney (which typically works in 1-2 week guided trips), the anniversary trip will be a concise 2 week (13 night/14 day) adventure to Brazil, Argentina, and Chile, 3 of the primary nations that the El Grupo traveled to on this diplomatic journey. As an attempt to replicate some of the experiences Walt and his grupo experienced, you'll take several tours into the natural wonders of these three nations, as well as dine and interact with the natives in the regions in 'Disney' related activities.

Trip at a Glance
Despite the limited 'untold story' of Walt's trip to South America - some photos, relics, and other publically available information from news articles and so forth have told the tale of exploration, cultural integration, and the Disney/Americana touch to the Southern Hemisphere. While this trip will not have the same intended diplomatic mission attached to it, throughout the highlights, guests on this trip will be able to see these places from Walt's eyes.

The tour guides and adventurer cast will be able to detail stories from Walt and El Grupo, very much like a behind the scenes tour at Walt Disney World - akin to the 'Behind the Steam Train Tour' or 'Behind the Seeds' at the Land Pavilion. These stories will be integrated with your own adventures making it a seamless transition between the two intentions.

I'm going to be with limited internet until next Tuesday, so that's why I'm posting in advance if that's alright. I must say for everyone doing this, don't underestimate the amount of research involved in this project.

Though that mainly had to do with not being able to find a detailed summary source for his trip, unless you bought the documentary film. Most sources I was able to find had tidbits of info rather than a day by day plan of what they actually did and trying to tie a diplomatic trip back around to a vacation was also tricky.

This NPR article was one of the most lengthy discussions with the director if it helps as a source: https://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=112916523

I probably would have just bought the film if I had the week, but since I only had tonight free I took a shot at it, best of luck everyone with the project! :)

Indeed, the semi-finals project is usually the most difficult of the season, by design. You'll definitely have to do your homework on this one if you want top marks. So sorry I haven't gotten to feedback yet. Things have been absolutely INSANE between work, personal drama, and the podcast these past few days, mostly on the personal drama side of things. I've barely had any free time to myself. In hindsight having the projects due Sunday probably wasn't the best idea as Mondays are always the craziest day of the week at work haha. Rest assured, feedback will be coming by tonight. Thanks so much for your patience with that.

@spacemt354's Above the Clouds
Creativity:
10/10 - The creativity on display here should go without saying. You literally made a brand new WORLD!
Realism: 8/10 - With ambition comes doubt that audiences as a whole would embrace a brand new IP, but you definitely sell the novelty of exploring a wholly original anime universe.
Detail: 9/10 - Ironically fell into the same trap that Snoopy's been known to fall over this season of being so narrative driven that at certain points I had a hard time picturing the actual ride. A good problem to have!
Presentation: 10/10 - The character work is especially impressive.
+5 bonus points
Total: 42/40

Alright, as awesome as this project is I must admit it's a part of the reason why feedback took so long as I seriously had major writers block when it came to actually having stuff to say about it. This is like the textbook, dictionary definition of "so good it speaks for itself" which is a roadblock I've faced with writing out criticism that ironically Space himself is very good at navigating through with his own feedback. I mean, as I said in the scores...you built a whole world, mythology, ecosystem, cast of characters. My god the level of detail at work here is impressive for someone with such a busy schedule! If it's not already obvious, you're probably the top contender to take home the whole thing, a title that would be well deserved at this point.

Also, nice way to through a loophole into the project once again. I was very much hoping to see more truly obscure pieces of anime taken up in the tier five slot, but by inventing your own anime entirely I can't deny you the five points and shake your hand while doing so when it comes to beating the system. Ace and I will definitely get into specifics on the podcast, but I can't really think of a lot else to say in written form other than this thing truly fires on all cylinders. It might not hit close to home on a personal level the same way an iconic project like Legend of the Lost Army or Mirror Disneyland does, but this is still truly one of the most utterly ambitious projects in the game's long history.

@Basketbuddy101's Yu-Gi-Oh! Duelists Gallery
Creativity:
8/10 - I wanted to give you credit for finding a loophole around doing a truly obscure anime for a tier project, but strangely this series aired for about six weeks on Toonami. Still, good use of a rather vanilla IP.
Realism: 9/10 - A reoccurring thing I loved in this project was a good use of recently unveiled technology.
Detail: 10/10 - It's another Basketbuddy grand slam!
Presentation: 10/10 - Great to get back to some 3D artwork goodness from you! Love how streamlined the images outlining the ride system were. Definitely got a good sense of space with this.
+3 bonus points
Total: 40/40

This was another one that was giving me trouble with feedback, specifically because of the strange loophole that this show aired on Toonami for a very limited time. Because it's a rather vanilla IP that definitely doesn't fit the category of obscure which tier five is meant for I decided on a tier three for this one. Overall my favorite piece is how you incorporate the technology that will presumably be at play for Captain America into this. The project is another in a long line of examples of you taking any random IP and making it something truly special. It reminds me of your Spongebob project from season ten in that regard.

Also really good use of characters and world-building. As someone who's only passingly familiar with the show as one of the original Pokemon rip-offs, you definitely did a solid job of establishing how this world is unique and made the characters pop with personality. As said before, the technology at play here is a grand slam! It's weirdly almost like Radiator Springs Racers in reverse with the competitive part happening at the beginning instead of the finale. Really interesting twist on the interactive formula. Overall while this show might be my least favorite of the IPs chosen this time around, your sense of detail mixed with awesome presentation skills and acute reference points led to yet another hit on your end.

@FireMountain's Fantastic Four Showcase of Superhuman Abilities
Creativity:
9/10 - I love the combination of thrill ride and theater show. It feels like a next generation Terminator 2 3D
Realism: 10/10 - Yes! For the past couple projects I've loved how you're taking freshly off the shelf theme park tech and applying it to Disney. Terrific job in this department!
Detail: 8/10 - It could be a tad longer compared to the likes of Space and Basketbuddy's projects, but very strong for you.
Presentation: 8/10 - Solid reference photos, not much more to say.
+3 bonus points
Total: 39/40

Honestly, this is subjectively speaking my favorite project this round and by far your best project this season! It once again subverts the tiers to get in something that isn't anime which I'm totally fine with. The ride system is just a home run for me, and you took it to the next level by introducing the stunt AAs. All this new tech shouldn't work as well as it does, but you really explain it well. I think the one thing that separates this from Basketbuddy and Space is sheer scale, but this is definitely your most ambitious project yet. The idea of an attraction that's truly a theatrical experience but also at the heart of it a thrill ride that can really get your blood racing is great. It kind of reminds me of my Scott Pilgrim project which would have been a Back to the Future style simulator with AAs and projection effects filling out the theater. Pump out a little bit more detail next time and your sheer creativity could really compete with the top dogs!

@Snoopy's Astro Boy: Flights of Fancy
Creativity:
9/10 - The super immersive flat ride angle is VINTAGE Snoopy and I love it!
Realism: 10/10 - Can't really say anything wouldn't work.
Detail: 5/10 - If anything I feel like less would have been more here. You perhaps had too many characters and not enough description of what each character would actually do.
Presentation: 6/10 - I mean, it's barebones but it works haha.
+3 bonus points
Total: 33/40

You see folks, THIS is why you do elevator pitches! Snoopy, I love that this calls to mind EXACTLY the kind of projects that made you a winner of this game to begin with...ambitious but small scale. That's a winning combination for you and you should definitely stick to it. Great use of the Kuka technology in a way that's not just a flat ride version of a tech demo like in Lego Land but still very much confined to a small space. By playing to your strengths you've turned an elevator pitch into a solid "B" grade proposal, which is the second time this has happened in the season. Perhaps elevator pitches will go down as a new wrinkle/strategy in the game going forward. At any rate, any time you design a highly themed flat ride type attraction it's something special and this is no exception.

@DisneyManOne's Pokemon: Gotta Catch Em All
Creativity:
7/10 - This is probably a judge a book by its cover thing but the bland title REALLY didn't help your case.
Realism: 9/10 - Ironically both Pokemon and the Pokemon rip off got the Captain America treatment, haha.
Detail: 6/10 - ALL the Pokemon are loose in this one city...Eeeer what??!?!
Presentation: 8/10 - Good map work.
Total: 30/40

Alright, this is a really weird case because technically your project is similar to Basketbuddy's with the ride system, and yet Basket's is just SO much more ambitious. I really feel like this was you on auto-pilot and you can do better. It's fine to go with a tier one project, but make it stand out. I think the problem I had most was with the detail. With how vast the Pokemon world is, it's hard to fathom each and every Pokemon being involved in this one city. I think the attraction would have truly shined if you would have picked a handful of Pokemon that needed to be captured. As it stands the detail here is pretty barebones. I really hate to be harsh with this one and I'm not sure if Pokemon was just the only option you were comfortable with doing. Props for turning in something if that was the case because I know this wasn't the most accesible project in the world. As is stands this is probably the weakest of the proposals but still a very good attempt that sadly gets overshadowed by a lot of the more ambitious content we've seen this round. Use this as a point of reference for self improvement because I know you can do truly great things if you set your mind to it!

I've gotta give Tiki and Ace a ton of props for the challenges this season.

In what will most likely be my final competition on wdwmagic, you both have challenged me each round with prompts that force me to really think and get creative because I know very little about the concepts involved ;)

This has turned out to be really nice and looking forward to the finale. :)

Honestly, if I've learned one thing this competition, it's been I really don't have the time for thinking up and doing a full write-up. Perhaps it's time I moved on to maybe working as a judge on some of these? Maybe I just need the change.
Sorry for the super late reply but we’d love to have you as a guest judge for the last two prompts (this one and the next one)!

No time for this one but next one, absolutely game for.
I'm really not sure when next season is going to be. Thinking about taking the year off to let other people shine with their hosting as I've hosted five seasons in three years. I definitely want to be on the forefront of helping others out with their start up comps though. Once it comes time for season 18, you'll be one of my first calls :)

@spacemt354's Above the Clouds

Well, that was a sneaky loophole :p I can honestly say that I did not expect any five-point projects and then you come out here and make your own Anime! WOW! I love it so much! I think it fits Tomorrowland quite nicely. I love the queue and the detail you went into with it with all the interactive elements.

And now for the attraction… I love it.I feel right in the middle of it and between all of the pictures and details, I can feel truly immersed in the attraction and understand how it’d look/ work.

Creativity: 10/10 - I feel like this is a given considering you made your own Anime.

Realism: 9/10 - I could definitely see the OLC doing something as ambitious as this

Detail: 10/10 - Great amount of detail. Between the beautiful art, and ride-through, I knew what was going on.

Presentation: 10/10 - Truly beautiful art.

@Basketbuddy101's Yu-Gi-Oh! Duelists Gallery

If I were playing, I would have done Yu-Gi-Oh! So I am glad somebody did it! I really like this attraction. I think it is a good idea and is done effectively. I love the AugMusion technology you used. Feels like something I could really see being used. I think Universal Studios Japan is a great spot for this attraction to open and I feel like it could be expanded to more universal parks.

Creativity: 9/10 - I really liked the IP choice. Park choice makes sense to me.

Realism: 9/10 - This project feels very realistic to me. The new technology in it is amazingly real.

Detail: 9/10 - Overall, a good amount of detail I just feel like I was missing something

Presentation: 10/10 - Great presentation. The images were all clear on what you were going for/ thinking.

Total: 40/40

@FireMountain's Fantastic Four Showcase of Superhuman Abilities

Bold strategy closing an attraction that hasn’t even opened yet. But it works! This is a really fun attraction! You can never go wrong with a Fantastic Four attraction and it is Marvel replacing Marvel so it doesn’t feel out of place.

Creativity: 9/10 - Very creative project! A Fantastic Four attraction is beautiful.

Realism: 8/10 - This is a very realistic project in my opinion. Only thing I am not sure about is if there is enough room for this new attraction in the footprint of the basic C-ticket flat ride.

Detail: 8/10 - Some details missing here or there but overall, it was a decent amount of detail for what I felt like I needed.

Presentation: 9/10 - Great presentation. Loved the photos and details throughout the post

+3 bonus points

Total: 37/40

@Snoopy's Astro Boy: Flights of Fancy

Astro Boy? An amazing IP choice. I get this is a more “elevator pitch” style but I really enjoy this attraction. I would love to see this fully fleshed out someday!

Creativity: 8/10 - Great IP, and great use of re-using a current ride.

Realism: 8/10 - Definitely realistic. Could see them losing the marvel rights some day and they have to find some form of replacement, no reason it couldn’t be Astro Boy.

Detail: 4/10 - Definitely shorter prompt. But I also don’t really know what’s going on on the attraction besides meeting all of these characters and randomly defeating some enemies.

Presentation: 4/10 - Gives me the 5 main things every presentation needs, just needs more of each.

+3 bonus points

Total: 27/40

@DisneyManOne's Pokemon: Gotta Catch Em All

A safe pick in Pokemon for sure but nothing wrong with that. I actually really like the attraction. It almost feels like a fun, new, updated version of Pokemon Snap! For the N64. While I know Pokemon is Nintendo, it doesn’t feel right to be in the same land as Mario and co. just doesn’t mesh right in my opinion.

Creativity: 8/10 - Even though I am not a huge Pokemon fan, I would be allllllll over this attraction! Really fun idea!

Realism: 8/10 - Only thing keeping it here instead of a higher score is I don’t know if enough room was left for this attraction.

Detail: 6/10 - Would have loved a little bit more detail/ images throughout just to make it clearer.

Presentation: 8/10 - Good presentation. CLean map and organization for an overall clean project.

The tour will draw a great deal of inspiration from Walt Disney's real life travels in South America, and while he may not have directly visited some of the specific spots along the way, the tour will retain his adventurous spirit throughout its entirety. The tour will remain unique in that several spots along the way will be given particular attention to, including the sites that Walt and his team of animators, 'El Grupo,' had some amount of involvement with. The 10 day, 9 night trip will allow ample time for guests to take in all the excitement that Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires have to offer.

Much like any other Adventures by Disney trip, guests will be supplied with two 'Adventure Guides,' who will serves as guests' main points of contact throughout the trip. Additionally, guests will have the distinct luxury of having a local expert with them at all times, so as to ensure that they don't miss out on any of the cultural values of the specific areas in which they find themselves in. Snacks are provided throughout the trip, and dinner accommodations are also taken care of. This is an altogether hassle-free travel experience, and guests will be free of the inherent anxieties that come along with being in unfamiliar places. Knowing 'what to do next' will not be an issue, and guests are sure to feel that their enjoyment of the many locations throughout is maximized to the fullest extent possible within the time in which they are traveling. The first stop on the tour, of course, will begin with none other than beautiful Brazil.

Walt's favorite song on the trip. Guests might consider it an anthem of sorts on their tour…

First Stop: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil - 5 Days

Arrival: Galeão International Airport

Hotel: Belmond Copacabana Palace, where Walt Disney stayed with Lillian Disney

In the span of five days, guests will relax and enjoy many of Rio's most popular attractions. The last day will allow for guests to roam the city at their own leisure. The first four days will be dedicated to the specific attractions on the collectible itinerary.

Attractions:

-Tijuca National Park: A group hike will take guests on a trek through this natural wonderland, where they'll witness the full glory of Cascatinha Waterfall, which 'El Grupo' happened to visit.

Walt's team of animators drew heavy artistic inspiration from the surrounding plant life and wildlife.

-Santa Teresa Neighborhood: Take a walk around the block in Santa Teresa's Neighborhood, which might've inspired Herb Ryman.

-Barra de Tijuca Beach: Surfing, kite flying, swimming. Can't go wrong with the beach on your vacation.

-Sugarloaf Mountain Cable Car: A most scenic experience to be sure; guests who are afraid of heights might want to skip this one.

-Christ the Redeemer: No trip would be complete without a visit to this spectacular monument. Regardless of its lack of relevance in deference to 'El Grupo,' guests would be furious if this location were missed.

Second Stop: Buenos Aires, Argentina - 5 Days

Arrival: Buenos Aires Airport

Hotel(s): Option between Park Hyatt Buenos Aires and Alvear Palace Hotel, the 'base of operations' for El Grupo.

The fun continues with a trip to the Capital City of Buenos Aires, which, much like Rio de Janeiro, is in close proximity to the beach.

Attractions:

-Plaza de Mayo: Arguably one of the more historically-significant areas in all Buenos Aires, this two block plaza will offer guests a walking tour of various landmarks and restaurant, including

-Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes: There's no better way to take in the artistic value of Argentina than by visiting this fine arts museum, recognized as one of the best in the world, with works from such artists as Picasso, Monet, and Van Gogh.

-San Telmo Market: Spend a lazy afternoon roaming the streets of this popular market, where you might find the perfect souvenir to take home and remember your trip.

-La Boca: Take a scenic bike ride through the color-rich alleyways of La Boca, a community so rich in color, it's hard to imagine anyone not drawing artistic inspiration from its brightly-colored windows, doors, and other architectural features. Guests might also enjoy a visit to the open-air museum known as Caminito Street.

-Pamero: Tour the lakes, bridges, and bright landscapes of this popular recreational area. Guests won't want to miss a visit to the nearby Buenos Aires Japanese Gardens area, the largest in all South America.

End of the Tour:

With that, the Aventura de El Grupo tour comes to a fulfilling end. With five days at both Brazil and Argentina, guests have more than enough time to enjoy a concentrated yet thoroughly authentic South American experience. Again, the goal with this trip isn't to fully emulate the specificities of Walt's travels in South America, but rather idealize them in the minds of guests. Much like California Adventure's Buena Vista Street doesn't attempt to meticulously recreate Los Angeles as it was from the 1920s to the 1930s, the Aventure de El Grupo Tour instead paints a vibrant yet incomplete picture of South America and allows for guests to complete the picture with their own adventures. From an economic standpoint, fact that the tour is limited and only available for one year also generates a great deal of interest from the division's clientele.

Hasta luego, amigos!
