So what IS the dress code @ California Grill?

They are liberal on the dress code, but I have seen guests turned away twice once at CG and the other was at Narcoossee's. At CG the guy was wearing cut-offs and a white wife beater, not really appropriate for McDonald's. At Narcoossee's they family had clearly just walked in from the pool.

Technically you could wear nice shorts and a button down or golf shirt, but judging from what I have seen others wear and what I have worn myself, I would opt for the khakis and dress shirt.

we always dress nice (collar shirt, khaki shorts, dress, etc), but some others there do not follow the dress code a previous poster put up. it didnt bother me either way, but there is NO way i would have showed up for dinner there the way a few people were dressed. im not sure they would turn you away, but i was surprised by sleeveless shirts and swim shorts. NO joke!

Based on the appearance of some of the people I saw while waiting for our table at Cali Grill at the beginning of May, they really don't seem to enforce their dress code.

I will never, ever forget the guy wearing a dirty Dolphins jersey and denim shorts who looked like he hadn't combed his long hair (or taken a shower) in a week.

We were nicely dressed because we went there to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary--I even made my husband wear a sportcoat--and I definitely felt OVER dressed. Once we got to our table, though, I completely forgot about everyone else and focused on our meal.

To the OP: Even though I personally feel that the atmosphere of the restaurant calls for a polo/golf shirt (i.e, collared), that's just my opinion. If you are wearing shorts and a t-shirt, you will not feel out of place. Bonus points to you if they are clean.

I agree with everyone else, you'll be fine. I'm by no means a dressy person but I didn't feel at all uncomfortable there. I would think there is more danger of being over-dressed than under-dressed! It was far less smart than I imagined it would be, as long as people aren't actually scruffy they don't seem to mind. Food was cracking though, a wonderful evening out :slurp:

while dressy shorts and a collared shirt are acceptable, why not consider the khakis and button down shirt?
they aren't really that much more uncomfortable, and you show a little more respect for the surroundings. the CG is indeed the flagship restaurant of wdw and the surroundings certainly convey that. i have seen many folks there in shorts (and what you consider dressy and what others consider dressy may vary widely) and shirts that i would not call business casual.
if the surrounds bespeak elegance and class, don't we owe it to the establishment, and to the others around us, to acknowledge the effort they have put into presenting us with an elegant meal by dressing accordingly?
they certainly treat us at CG like upscale, elegant consumers, i think we owe them the same respect by treating OURSELVES that way.
just my humble opinion

well put. you convinced me. I'm packing a pair of slacks and a button down shirt. I'll post pictures when back. Maybe I'll take pics of the other patrons and see how they stacked up.

Great, we'll look forward to it.

I'm sure you'll look fine, along with the vast majority of your fellow diners. To be honest, I can't imagine many people going out for dinner on holiday, especially somewhere hot like Florida, without first going back to their hotel to shower and change, not even somewhere 'basic', never mind an upmarket restaurant like California Grill. I certainly wouldn't.

Have a great time :)

I tend to sweat BADLY! I think i would look far worse wearing slacks in the FL sun than I would in dress shorts and a dressy shirt. I'd have a soaking wet dress shirt and very moist pants. Plus I dress up every single day of my life and am on vacation and don't wish to drag along my work clothes for one dinner on a 14 day trip, where I'll need all the luggage space I can muster (bringing a baby). Sooo, dress shorts for me.
