Buy your mosquito repellant now folks because the next big thing in diseases is coming to Disney World. Dengue fever, which is transmitted by mosquitoes has occured in south Florida, with a possible case in central Florida. I give the media less than two weeks to make it sound like if you go to Disney, you're going to be infected.

although the media does create somewhat of an unnecessary fixation and sense of immediacy on such diseases that does not reduce the actual danger of the risk.. bird flu and swine flu weren't massive devastating outbreaks, and any scientist could have told you what the chances of them being one were, but the point was that they had the potential and a flu similar to them (changed between animal and human DNA) will most likely kill a lot of people one day.. its really a question of when, not if.
and that is probably the darkest, least disney thing that has ever been written in a post on this board. sorry.

I work in a doctor's office and we actually ordered the Dengue Fever test for one of our patient's who had been at WDW recently and came home with symptoms that quite possibly could have been caused by Dengue Fever. Luckily, the patient did not have it, but even up here in the metro-Atlanta burbs, we are aware of the risk.

FYI - No I am not concerned at all about Dengue Fever becoming a souvenier of my trip. We arrive in 2 weeks! :sohappy:

As of now there are no reports of any local mosquitos actually carrying the disease. The local infections were acquired in Puerto Rico and Haiti and it's not communicable from person to person. So... nothing to see here... move along... :ROFLOL:

All Disney would have to do is show their normal efforts on the bug front.

They nuke the place every night for bugs. They have trucks hit every byway, parking lot, etc with fog and they spray every inch of the parks and resorts.

We lived in Orlando for a while and having only had WDW experience prior to that, we were stunned at the number of crazy bugs we saw around our place every day. Mothra, ants with red velvet on them, 5in beetles being carried off section at a time by colonies of creepy crawlies.... flippin' disgusting.

All I have ever seen on property are the occasional lovebug, lizzards, and a feral cat in the Jungle Cruise.

Seriously, have you ever had a bite? I haven't.

People should get used to spraying sun screen during day and Moskitto repellent at evening / night. It's just best to play safe and not wait till the media over-reacts on this stuff.

Although I will not cancel any future trips to Disney World, I will skip going to the parks. Additionally, I will stay in my resort room 24/7, and avoid possible exposure by not allowing Mousekeeping to enter the room for cleaning. I also plan on using masking tape to seal the door and window to my room. A generous supply of non-perishable food, purchased before the trip, should keep me fed for days. I plan to watch videos of previous vacations for the sake of "theme park" enjoyment. Yep, I'm not going to let a few pesky mosquitoes and their filthy diseases ruin my WDW trips!

Just visited a friend in CT OMG I got bit like crazy around a camp fire one night..WITH BUG SPRAY ON! It was like they didn't even care. It was ridiculous the amount of mosquitos!

Don't be so foolish, there's a possibility of catching botulism or salmonella if the non-perishable foods includes meat.

To be safe just bring breadsticks and bottles water, bring some chlorine tablets for the water just in case.

mmmmmm.... I love the smell of DEET at 3 in the morning. Seriously- those spray trucks are HUGE!!! Maybe that's the reason that we can't swim in Bay Lake- it's where they make the deet!

I know several folks on the pest management crew and they have said that you should be safe in the parks, but wearing bug spray outside the parks and at the resorts is a must. Those do not get sprayed as heavily.

I live in Florida's tropical southwest in an area with ponds and a lot of standing water and I've only noticed one or two mosquito bits this whole summer.

I hope people really don't think mosquitos are crazy here in florida ...

THAT's why I've never been bothered by any bugs at WDW - no mosquitos, flies, bees, wasps. Up here in Michigan, the mosquitos are man eaters! I just always thought the gators in FL ate all the bugs!!:ROFLOL:
