The DW and I watched Snow White last night and started discussing the attraction in WDW. I see a lot of people on here saying how scary that ride used to be but is changed now to be less frightful. So my question is what has changed about it? What was so scary? IT doesn't seem very frightening to me and I can't see what story elements would be altered. Thanks for your help.

I vaguely remember riding this for the first when I was 9 (I'm now 24) with my aunt and we still talk now about how the evil queen suddenly appeared dressed as a hag and frightened the living daylights out of us both! So much so, I think we only rode it once!!

Now, it just doesn't seem to happen and I've looked and looked for where it was that it happened originally and I can't see it!

Here's a brief description:
Pre-1994 Version
The original Disney World version of the ride was very different, and arguably scarier. Snow White did not appear, and the Dwarves showed up briefly in one scene.

The queue was similar to Tokyo's current one. It featured the Dwarves' mines and their house was visible in the distance. The guests began by entering the castle in a scene very much like the current ride; however, there was no Snow White cleaning. Upon entering, the guests see a mirror, but not the magic one. The Queen still transforms into the Witch and is still seen at the cauldron. The riders "crash" through the dungeon walls and escape through the forest (still bumping into the Witch).

Soon, the guests arrived at the Dwarves' cottage to see the animals peering in on them. They passed the Dwarves (in their only appearance) walking up the stairs to their room to investigate a scary shadow, which was presumably Snow White. The Witch is waiting in the doorway with an apple.

The final scene is the diamond mines, where the Witch appears several more times. Her final appearance is on top of a doorway, pushing an enormous jewel onto the riders. They then enter a room full of flashing lights, implying they'd just been crushed. It was very similar to Mr. Toad's Wild Ride. For obvious reasons, the ride was later changed.

In the queue, the Queen used to also open a curtain from the castle and glare down at you. Terrifying!

I remember riding it as a kid (and as an adult a few years back) and the witch just creeped me out (can't really explain it, but it scared the living day lights out of me because she would just pop out at you!)

It can still be scary for children. I remember riding it as a child before the change and it didn't scare me. I was a fan of Mr. Toad too, it was my favorite. So when I heard that it had changed and wasn't as scary I thought it would be ok for my 7 year old daughter to ride. After much discussion with my husband why it would be ok for her to ride, he gave in and we did ride. Well, my daughter was so frightened and cried the entire ride. :( I felt so bad.

At what point did they remove the pop up queen? Or did they. I am thinking about past rides and I do remember the witch popping up and thinking this is why it is scary. I considered not taking my sister on it, but ended up doing it anyway. I don't recall the witch that time.

This ride should be called the Snow White's Evil Queen ride. There is much more of her than Snow White.

If you think you're going to see Snow White and the cute Dwarves than you're in for a surprise. It's very dark and the witch is everywhere. My daughter (she was 3 1/2 at the time) wanted to go on it because she LOVES Snow White, she was so excited to go on the ride and when it was done she said (with a look of fear) "I don't want to go on that ride anymore".

I remember when it was like that. A few years ago when I went on the ride I noticed a big difference with the ride than the past. I wasn't really sure what is was, and this was bugging me for a long time and now I finally know. Thank you!! :D

The queen pushes a boulder on your head at the end and you die?! That's nuts! There isn't even a happy ending?! Basically the ride could have been called "Snow White goes to Heaven"?
