You know, as the mom of a child w/ autism, I have always counted my blessings. I've seen the struggles other moms have had, and know how so easily that could be me. One of our biggest issues when we still didn't have a diagnosis, was Joel's ability to be so single-minded he would ignore anyone saying anything to him or any danger that might be waiting to harm him. One of our biggest fears has been whether he is aware of basic human instinct of avoiding anything that can cause harm.....

Today as we were leaving school, I stopped to ask our principal a question but had to wait as the kgarten teacher talking to her would not shut up for two seconds....in the meantime, with Abby shadowing him, Joel is walking across the schoolyard toward the front sidewalk. What I quickly became aware of was he was. not. stopping. He was headed for the road! I had to yell his name and make a dash for him, because he was focused on one thing....reading the names and models of the cars. He wasn't listening to Ab at all either, and he is rapidly getting too strong for her. I felt awful for raising my voice, but I told him how much he had scared me and how dangerous what he was doing was.

I thought he was improving in this area, I really did....now, I'm wondering if he is still going to try to escape or run off on us....:cry::cry:.....between that and the stupid experience last night with that @#$!$ bat, my nerves have officially snapped. I can't stop shaking here.....where's the bloody Windex????

Wow! I can imagine how scared and upset you were with him going towards the street like that! How do they not have diagnosis for him yet?

Oh, he's diagnosed with PDD (pervasive developmental disorder) since he was 3 - this was just a flashback to that time before diagnosis - I'm sorry if that wasn't clear.

Oh ok then. Soooo, that is a type of autism? Sorry I thought there was only different levels of autism like mild to severe. :o

Yes, PDD is toward the higher functioning end of the autistic spectrum - he has some symptoms of 'classic autism' but not all. And he's come a long way in terms of eye contact and verbal ability. He's really doing well....this just set me back a little - reminded me of another area that still needs work.

Thanks for all the prayers! Grandma is out of surgery and doing well. My dad said that things went a lot better than he thought they would so her recovery should be shorter. :sohappy: My dad, aunt, and uncle all had a talk with my grandfather and told him that if they want to avoid assisted living then they are going to have to agree to a live in nurse and he didn't argue. I think I'm going to take a trip home and surprise my grandma with a little Mia therapy.

Glad to hear the surgery went well Chrissy.

I guess for now this is not a major "episode". Keeping me in my room, not sending me to L/D at this point. We'll see how the rest of the day goes. *sigh* So frustrating and annoying.

I'll be keeping you in my prayers Steph.

Good morning.

Happy Graduation Day to Connor.
Even though he doesn't post here anymore some of you might be interested in knowing that Connor graduates from high school today.
And...
He's going to the University of Pennsylvania next semester...
Ivy League...la-dee-da.
Anyway...I'm happy for him and thought some of you might like to know.

No big plans this weekend.
Bob got me a Wii for our anniversary so we are playing that. :o:sohappy:
How are you and any big plans?

A Wii!! Yay!
That should keep you busy! :D

Our pool is open, so we'll probably spend most of the weekend there since the weather is absolutely perfect.

My sister gave us their old pool 10x3 ft. just enough to get wet. :sohappy:
Now the decision is
to stay inside and play Wii
or
go outside and get wet.:lol:
