You know, as the mom of a child w/ autism, I have always counted my blessings. I've seen the struggles other moms have had, and know how so easily that could be me. One of our biggest issues when we still didn't have a diagnosis, was Joel's ability to be so single-minded he would ignore anyone saying anything to him or any danger that might be waiting to harm him. One of our biggest fears has been whether he is aware of basic human instinct of avoiding anything that can cause harm.....
Today as we were leaving school, I stopped to ask our principal a question but had to wait as the kgarten teacher talking to her would not shut up for two seconds....in the meantime, with Abby shadowing him, Joel is walking across the schoolyard toward the front sidewalk. What I quickly became aware of was he was. not. stopping. He was headed for the road! I had to yell his name and make a dash for him, because he was focused on one thing....reading the names and models of the cars. He wasn't listening to Ab at all either, and he is rapidly getting too strong for her. I felt awful for raising my voice, but I told him how much he had scared me and how dangerous what he was doing was.
I thought he was improving in this area, I really did....now, I'm wondering if he is still going to try to escape or run off on us....

.....between that and the stupid experience last night with that @#$!$ bat, my nerves have officially snapped. I can't stop shaking here.....where's the bloody Windex????
