Smoking in the parks

Now, this may be a touchy subject, but as a smoker (and not too happy about it) I think it is very nice of WDW to have designated smoking areas. My only wonder is : if people do not smoke, and hate being around smoke/smokers, why do those people CHOOSE to hang out in the smoking sections, and gripe the whole time?

Who do you know, hang out in smoking sections?

People can pass them. But I don't see other than smokers hanging out complaining :)

Because they're morons?:veryconfu HAHA j/k Maybe they dont realise theyre in a designated smoking area? If you're not a smoker then you probably wouldnt be interested in knowing where the smoking areas are. I certainly dont know where they are.

After mu initial post, and late thoughts, maybe it is because some people do not realize it. I dunno...

Nonsmokers unfortunately have to walk by smoking areas to get from point A to point B in the parks. It would be nice if WDW had smoke buildings so that smokers could indulge in their drug habit in a private place and not have to "share" their drug with others.

Go to any resort in WDW and you will find that smokers regularly check into nonsmoking rooms in nonsmoking buildings. They then go outside to smoke, so that makes it ok in their opinion. Kick your addiction because you will be looked upon and treated as a third class person until you clean up. Smokers and their clothes stink!:hurl:

Ugh, I think all of WDW should be a smoke-free vacation destination. In honor of Walt Disney, as smoking was what did him in, smoking should not be allowed in any Disney Vacation Destination.

I have no problem with smokers as long as they smoke in designated smoking areas.

Having been a smoker for many years, (I quit 6 years ago) I can understand their need to light up.

I can handle 2nd hand Smoke outdoors...it dissipates fast.

Just don't smoke in the queue lines please.

As long as Disney allows cigarettes to be purchased in their resort gift shops I feel smokers have the right to smoke.

Until The Federal Government Bans the sale of all tobacco products, (And we all KNOW this aint gonna happen...can we say TAXES!?) smokers have the right to smoke somewhere.

What we need is a Designated Gum chewers area and a Designated Fat Sweaty Stinky persons area...and perhaps a Designated Killer STROLLER Lane...

NO...but it can mess up a good vacation if ya step in it.

Seriously though....

....if you stay away from the designated smoking areas and leave the smokers alone, everyone will be happy.

I repeat...when the Feerderal Government BANS the sale of Tobacco products altogether, I will complain about passive smoke...but until it happens, don't blame the smokers..blame the Government and the tobacco Lobby.

As long as cigarettes are sold...smokers have the right to smoke in designated smoking areas.

NOTE To SMOKERS: I smoked 3 packs a day (5 on the weekends) for 27 years then quit...so if I can do it..YOU can do it...Quit smoking...it's tough, but you'll thank me later when you do.:animwink:

I've weighed in on this before.......my problem is not complaining about smokers in the designated areas, but it's them being outside their area. We found this especially bad at Epcot, perhaps because there were more international visitors than the other parks. My wife is allergic to cigarette smoke--violent headaches immediately--and it's a constant battle to fight it in public. Reminding smokers in here to smoke in designated areas is like preaching to the choir; it's the "uninformed" or rude park visitor that is usually the culprit. Will CM's do anything about it if you kindly ask and explain the situation?

I agree w/ SpongeScott - Epcot is worse for smoking outside the designated areas.

Oh and here is a bumper sticker seen on a car during rush hour traffic in Atlanta: "Smokers Are Smelly Butt Suckers". Pretty gross, but true.:hurl:

true, it's not the people that follow the rules, it's the ones that don't. If I am in a smokeing area i would expect smoking to be around me, if I don't want that I can be anywhere else. I am not going into detail it is a sensitive subject on this board.

Bravo!
I agree 100%.
There should be a sign at the edge of property:
"Dear Valued Guest,
Due to the fact that our beloved
founder, Walt Disney, died as a
result of smoking, Walt Disney World
Resort is a non-smoking area. Please
feel free to visit the smoking areas
outside our resort for your smoking
needs. Thank You, and have a Magical Day. "

Yep. I'm serious.

yeah its not the people don't don't follow the rules, its the people that don't.

Now some are just confused about where the smoking area is. They think that the area next to space (old Fed Ex area) is a smoking area. Course its all down wind of the space que and people always move when asked.

While I was down there I tried to tell people about the smoking areas nears space...90% of the time they where all like cool ok. But then there was that 10%. One time while I was at space during fastpass this guy walks up to get one and I tell him about he smoking area and he went and blew his smoke right into my face! I was grossed out for months!

And then there was this time inside the mountain. Someone came into the area right before tower smoking....I was able to get him to put it out because I was going to refuse to let him inside unless he did. But that air inside there is still and the smell was there for like 20 minutes...really bad.

So thats me problem with smokers

Scotty...I agree with ya, Sir!

When the designated smoke areas first appeared in WDW, there seemed to be a real effort for everyone to follow the rules. I found it remarkable that so many people complied with the rule so quickly.....BUT, the number of people smoking outside the 'smoke areas' seems to be steadily and rapidly increasing since then. I've seen some CMs ask smokers to go to the designated area but most don't, probably cuz they simply want to avoid confrontation. It's not fair to put them on the enforcement end of this rule and put them at risk from the hot-heads.

I saw a pushing incident one day while waiting for the 3PM parade. Two guests were walking with their families down the middle of the road arguing about smoking. It was quite a pre-show for all of us witnessing this. The two guys were yelling at each other as well as the wives. The kids sat in their strollers watching the whole thing. No punches were thrown but there was a lot of profanity and shoving. Security converged on the two guys out of nowhere and separated them.

There needs to be a renewed, robust ad campaign against smoking outside the designated areas. Write it everywhere! Place signs near the turnstyles and have CMs remind people as they enter the parks. There must be a thousand ways to make people aware of the rule and to make it socially unacceptable and embarrassing for them to break it.
