Smoke a Cigar on the Balcony at WL?

Just curious. Can you smoke on your deck at WL? If you are in non-smoking? It just seems like the perfect place to catch some zzz's, a smoke and some relaxation at night.

Outdoors is not outdoors in the non smoking area of the resorts. When we had a woman smoking out side of the room next to us I complained to her after I had an asthma attack because of her and lost a whole day. She ignored me so I complained at the desk and within 20 minutes a CM was knocking on the door and letting them know not to smoke around the non smoking rooms
What you pointed out is an excellent example of why the resort smoking policy is currently under revision.

I must add something here. On our last trip we requested and was given non-smoking....but when we left our room one morning, we left in a haze of smoke. If they want a smoking room - place them on a certain side or away from non-smokers....I can not handle anothers smoke for medical reasons and I should not have to endure it while on my vacation. I realize they paid for their vacation - but if I paid for non-smoking; I should be granted non-smoking in my vacation area just as much as smokers are granted a smoking area.

Well Gee Woody, since you quoted an article that is 5 years old, it would be nice to see something new. :) Currently under revision as you put it is 5 years old.
That, Woody, is NOT current. ;)

She was outside, I assume you were inside and you still had an asthma attack? Not to be "smart" but how do you deal in the real world with such an asthma problem? Is smoke that only thing that triggers it?

ITA with you, but, your non smoking preference is only for your room, not the out of doors, except at the parks. The unfortunate thing is the more non smoking rooms Disney dedicates, the more the smokers will be outside "bothering" others.

it's not bothering me or my family, it's harming them. I've never smoked nor has my wife or our 11 year old daughter. but if we can smell your disgusting smoke, it's in our bodies. so if you have to question it, don't do it. get a smoking room, and do it in there. and don't cry when the cancer comes along. we've got a good thing with non-smoking laws here in Florida. don't be a jag and test them, OK? :)

Just out of curiosity, are the non-smoking balconies intermingled among floors with smoking or are the smoking balconies to one side of the hotel and non on the other side? I was wondering if someone in a room on say the 3rd floor could be smoking and the one above on the 4th floor be non-smoking which would then receive the smell of smoke when it rises.

I was leaving for the parks and she was right outside my room and yes it caused a severe asthma attack that ruined my day. The real world is not fun when some people don't respect other peoples environment.

If you choose to smoke on your balcony or outside your room (whether it is non smoking or smoking room) then you might be enjoying yourself and your bad habbit, but there are 20 (or more, much more) other people who are not enjoying themsleves or the fresh air and are forced to smell it, or go back inside.

I must say when I pay for a deluxe room or DVC and end up not on my balcony because of a smoker, I don't like it one bit. It happens almost every trip.

It sounds like many people feel the same way.

BTW Gail, while heat rises, smoke is particulate, not a gas and therefore is more dense than air and will sink.

Well put, I like that. As a health nut future health educator, I completely agree. Wish NJ would get some of those smoking laws.

exactly. if you want to go enjoy a cigar, I've got no problem with it. just go down to the parking lot downwind away from the resort. keep it away from people that don't want to be subjected to it. the one downside to FLA smoking laws is people go right outside a restaurant's doors to light up, not caring about the people that pass in and out of the same doors. I see people in malls hold open the doors to smoke while talking to people in the mall. absolutely pitiful and disgusting.

I belive that when states like FLA, New York and Cal do, then other follow suit. It just takes a bit longer!

It will happen soon, and I will be very happy! FLA non smoking laws is one of the reason I keep going back there!

I only wish the parks would enforce them. it makes me sick when I see someone pushing a stroller in the MK smoking. that's got to be a great car ride home for the baby. people never cease to amaze me. sorry I'm on a rant. I'm sick of hearing about 'smoker's rights' and seeing cigarette butts fly out of people's cars. it's so hypocritical.

I still feel smokers do not need to be in front of everyones door smoking. I could not enjoy my view from my balcony or enjoy a serene Florida evening for the cig. smoke. We had to pass through 5 people smoking in front of our door. We had to ask them to move so we could get out. Is that fair - especially since we had both rooms right there - they were not even near their rooms. Our door and my daughters door were next to each other - when I asked the guy to move, he moved in front of my daughters door. I had to ask him to move so I could knock on her door -- this WAS an invasion on MY vacation. AND YES, the smell was in our room. I am sorry, I mean no disrespect to anyone - but, Disney does need to address this problem.

For one, I have never been a jag nor do I plan to be one. I follow the rules regarding smoking and I do get smoking optional rooms. I have also been told that you can smoke outside your room on the balcony. I generally stay at OKW and the smoking and non smoking buildings are totally separate, so, I have never faced an issue with bothering someone. NOR have I ever smelled smoke through the 8-10" of concrete that separate the balconeys. The smoking buildings are a good fifty yards from non smoking and if someone is bothered by smoke at that distance, then they have some serious problem.
There has been NO evidence of smoke outside harming anyone. It can trigger a few reactions, just like trees and grass, for an asthmatic, it is serious regardless of the trigger. You inhale far more serious problems just driving down the highway. Inside smoke is an entirely different matter. CT is far more strict with their smoking laws, btw. IF cancer comes my way, I doubt I will cry, as I will realize it was the result of my choice. Not everyone that smokes gets cancer, heart disease or anything else.

It depends on the resort.

One whiff of smoke did that? What are your other triggers? People smoke everywhere all the time. Some don't respect the rules, while many do.
I have a really big problem with some perfumes. Eau de road kill makes it almost impossible to breath and disel engines can trigger migraines, but, I move away from it, if possible and I always have my medication with me. I was married to a severe asthmatic and he always had his inhaler with him. Luckily smoking was not a trigger for him, but, trees, grass, dust, etc was.

Come visit CT, it has some of the most stringent around. Second only to CA.

But Gail, your olfactory sense has been pretty much destroyed over the years by being coated with heavy layers of tar and similar substances.

You have excellent points here. I get nuts when I see people with small children in the smoking areas. I get nuts when I see them tending a baby with a cigarette in their hands, how dangerous is that? I go absolutley bonkers with any kind of littering, not just cigarette butts. Is it hypocritical? Not unless you think that the right to eat at McDonalds and toss the bag out the window is hypocritical. Face it, regardless of the activity or habit, there are always going to be some morons. Think about gum chewing and spitting that out on the ground or spitting in general.
IMHO, smokers do have rights, and part of those include following the rules.
It is a legal activity, we pay huge amounts of taxes on those cigarettes, and right now we seem to be going in the direction of taxation with representation.
I do, however, realize, my right to smoke ends at your nose. :)
