make your own word. I put that line there for a reason. I couldn't quite think of an adjective that would fit the bill..

But with a parent that participated in the ivy league, that mentality is probably partially inherited. So I don't hold anything against you.

At first I thought this was an attack against my dad.

Then I thought it was an attack against me.

But now I see it's merely a stab at the entire Ivy League community...

Lady and the Lamp

I don't think some people are getting the point in my posts -

The lamp fell with a very loud bang - it's obviously a heavy . A CM noticed it moments after I did - so there would be no point in my notifying a CM - that was already done. I took a picture of it because it was already in my line of site; the Christmas lights that I was photographing is in the background.

The point of the photo (and this thread) being to illustrate one example of how maintenance may be lacking at WDW. I am clearly not the first person to point this out, as it's been illustrated in countless other threads.

Had a CM not noticed it, being the Disney fan that I am, of course I would have notified someone. I have, on multiple occasions, notified a CM or Guest Relations of various potential problems that might inconvenience other guests after me.

In this situation, a CM noticed the problem on their own. What caught my attention was 1) the ease at which the lamp fell over and posed a potential danger, and 2) the length of time it took to remedy.

I've seen CM's respond VERY quickly to various situation, whereas this one didn't seem to have as much "urgency" related to it.

Poison Ivy League

P.P.S.

I like the Ivy League. I haven't had the pleasure of attending Harvard but I have been to Yale. Ivy League schools are reputable for a good reason. If I didn't like them, I wouldn't have some of their memorabilia - as I'm sure you do as well. I take no stabs - and I do admit that my comments do read as very sarcastic, if not "insulting." So please take them with a grain of salt, as I was being overly sarcastic.

Hugs and Kisses,

Timekeeper

P.S. Why does everyone assume that I am a male?

Sorry to have seemed rude with my previous reply to this. I am a CM and trying to defend Disney as much as possible. Obviously it was a concern to Disney and they took care of the problem as soon as humanly possible. Disney treats each incident, no matter how small, as if it were life threatening. However they are the experts on doing it calmly and without attrating attention. And they do it with a smile! :D

Lady and the Lamp

This lamp situation raises the old favorite question, "where were the parents at?"

Although the children may have been the cause (actual or proximate) of the lamp finally giving way, where were the parents? Maybe there were nearby, but decided to leave and not tell anyone in fear of blame - or maybe they weren't around and leave their kiddies unsupervised.

Maybe WDW should impliment a "leash" system in which children under a certain age must wear leashes attached to their adult gaurdians at all times. Okay, that's silly. :brick:

Just a little silly :animwink: That would defete the purpose of WDW being a family oriented place. But I agree about the parent thing. Where were they?

This lamp at EPCOT (which is obviously broken) is in the open, in the path of people walking, near a children's play area (water fountain), and has exposed wires and electrical components which is dangerously adjacent to the water fountain which is a popular play area for children. It seemed as though, if the fountain was fully active, this lamp and exposed wiring would be within reach of excess water run-off that is not absorbed into the ground.

As you can see, there is no barracade or warning to alert guests of this danger.

I do hope you took action and reported it to a cast member before you came online and made a thread about it.

Okay... I just read why you didn´t inform - you saw a cast member already took care of that- but to say that you posted this thread to show the lack of maintenance in Disney, is not fair. You took it right after it happened, and it can happen anywhere. It was corrected as soon as possible, so I don´t see where the lack of maintenance is. Now if you go back there tomorrow and the lamp is still there in the same condition as in your picture, then you´ll be correct.

Knowing Disney as well as I do... they didn't fix it immediatly. They pulled it out of the ground and put something there to block the gaping hole that was left behind. While it is determined if it is cost effective to fix it and who will benefit.. once that's decided, management will then clamor for a day or 2... or a week... to decided which department will be responsible for fixing it. Once that's decided, the deparment will then have to find the money in its budget to fix it and who will do the work. When that's done, the work order will be given to the CM('s) responsible for the repair, which knowing the average US teamster, will mean the work WILL be done....

eventually, but within the time constraints issued by the employer.

Give it 2 weeks or so..

Sounds like a typical Facilities Management department issue. I work for the county gov't (Southwest Florida) and our Facilities Management Department is the same way. About three weeks ago, I reported to our Facilities Management Department about a piece of rebar (steel bar) coming out of the concrete bumpers you see in parking lots. It was sticking up out of the block a good 5 inches. I drive a VW Cabrio Convertible and pulled into the parking space that had the rebar sticking out and wound up, when I pulled out that afternoon, ripping out (not too terribly) the underlining of the front bumper (I was able to snap it back in). I took pictures of the "damage" done to my car and the rebar and submitted those pics to our Fac. Management Dept. Director thinking I can get something done so that this doesn't happen to the next guy. Well, three weeks went by and guess what.... that piece of rebar is *STILL* sticking out of the concrete block. Now, I'm just waiting for our illustrious leader County Manager drive up in his brand new Jaguar and see that rebar take out the underside of his car.

Until then.... I wait for that day! (I'll make sure I take pictures and post them here) LOL

It was probably the cause of some careless teenagers that were there by themselves and wanted to have some fun. Doesn't seem like fun to me though.

Alright guys let's hire 20,000 people per park to stand around every 10 feet so they can be there in case anything happens in their 10 foot radius, ok? Ready... GO!

You inspect things like rides and attractions on a daily basis. However, a lamp post isn't something that normally requires inspection unless it is inoperative. In this case it wasn't broke from an outward appearance except maybe for the leaning. That would not be enough to even attract most peoples attention when there are 30 or 40 thousand people running aroudn the park asking questions.

Chances are someone "broke" the lamp earlier in the day and uprighted it with little or no notice of other guests and left. Or, if the guests did notice, chose not to get involved. Then some poor unspecting kids bumped it and it fell over.

Do you inspect and or fix all of your property before it shows an obvious flaw?

Ok here is my advice, STOP FREAKING OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Accidents happen, Disney is not perfect, we are close, but we are run by humans and humans make mistakes. If the merch. CM did in fact see that broken lamp they either called someone or unfortunetely assumed that someone else was already on the case, or they didn't know what extension to use to call someone, and that is likely. I am a merch. CM and I honestly would have to ask a manager to know what extension or who to talk to in regards to a problem of that sort. It's not that I ams tupid or do
nt care about safety enough to know it's that Disney World is a whole other world. No one can know everything there is to know in the world and the same goes for WDW. Also the merch. CM can not simply leave her merchandise just chillin' there unattended to go over to the lamp post. In short, there are four areas of focus for us CM Safety, Show, Courtesy, and Efficency, Safety is ALWAYS first.
It may not have been instaneous, but the problem was fixed.
Thank you for your attention to detail, but next time be a good samaritan and tell a CM just to be safe (pun intended ;))
