Anybody else out there ski? I just got some new gear and I'm looking for opinions on what I got (yeah, I suppose its a little late now): Volkl Vertigo G3 skis with Marker Titanium 1300 Piston Control bindings.

I'm so psyched up to try 'em out, but they're not going to be ready until next Monday:(

I ski,but find it makes more sense to just rent demo equipment each trip; since I usually only go once a year (but did make it 3 times back in 89-90) my equipment would become obsolete before I had a chance to break it in. ;)

I love to ski. I usually try to get out to Colorado or Utah twice a year. Plus ski locally in West Virginia (2 hr drive) a couple days a year. I've only been to Vermont once about 14 years ago, when I couldn't ski very well. This year I'm going to Colorado in March and again in April.

I have Technica boots. They are great. For skis I've got Rossi Vipers -- the 2000 version. Not the yellow with the super side cuts -- the maroon that aren't so violently shaped. I've tried lots of skis and these are about my favorite. Although I haven't tried the X-Scream which seems to be the most popular at the places I ski out west. My wife has those.

Where are your favorite places to ski?

Mine are Snowbird and Alta #1. For family I like Winter Park. I like Schweitzer in Idaho where we used to ski when we lived in Spokane but the snow is not always reliable. I also like Big Mountain Montana.

I would like to try Vermont again, but we don't usually go skiing as a family until April when the kids are out of school and the snow is much more reliable out west for spring. Maybe some time I'll take the kids out of school and head up that way. What are the best Vermont resorts? (I'm not the "Killington" type.)

Let us know how you like your new skis. You guys have had quite a bit of snow up there, eh?

My favorite places to ski....

Colorado: I like Steamboat Springs (great glades!) and Breckenridge.
Utah: I'm a big fan of Deer Valley (its just a ton of fun to cruise on their beautifully groomed trails).
New Mexico: Its all about Taos!!
Vermont: I'm not really the Killington type either, but it does offer the most terrain. I like to ski Stratton and Jay Peak is great for glades.
Europe: I'm a huge fan of Trois Vallees in France. Tons of skiing...all different terrain, including glacier. You could spend a month here and still not ski everything!

I really want to go try Jackson Hole in Wyoming and Whistler-Blackcomb in Canada, but that'll have to wait until next year due to budgetary restraints.

In terms of recommendations in Vermont, I think all the areas really have their own feel and its important to find the one that fits your family. There really are some great options, but like someone said above, if you wait until April, you'll probably be disappointed by conditions. Late January/February/Early March is normally the best time of the year for Vermont skiing.

Wow! You've been just about everywhere it seems.

I've never been to Steamboat Springs due to difficulty with getting lodging for my big crew and difficulty getting from here to there, but I would love to try it. I've been to Park City but not Deer Valley. And Europe -- don't know if I'll ever fly that far to ski.

I've heard great things about Snowmass -- that's one place I've always wanted to try but it's HUGE bucks. It prices out at about twice the cost of Summit County.

This year I'm gonna do Breckenridge and maybe one day at Vail in March and then Winter Park with the family in April. Fortunately Colorado is actually getting snow this year.:sohappy:

I've only been 4 times...but I'm becoming a big fan of it :)

I've skied Killington (my fave), Ragged (4 on the list...small, but still not bad), Mt. Snow (2 on my list), and Wachusett (3 on my list).

The more you ski the better it gets.

I may get butchered for saying this, but skiing is better than Disney World. Huge thrills and a lot less people to bug you. It's more expensive, though, unless you ski in the off season.

I think Disney did a great job at Blizzard Beach reproducing the look and feel of a ski resort. The main difference is that at a real ski resort there aren't a bunch of signs telling you how not to kill yourself. And the lifts are about 10 times as fast.

I went on a ski trip with some college buddies during my senior year. We went to Colorado and went to Keystone, Brecjenridge, Vail, aaaaand one other place, I can't remember the name.....anyway, I think Keystone was my favorite. Vail was awesome, too, but it was sooooo freaking HUGE. Anyway, have a good time on your new equipment. Sounds like you bought some good stuff.:)

Wow... I finally find someone who would rather go somewhere else than ten times in a row to WDW! I like trying new places too, therefore to go back to Disney, I will have to go somewhere else first... :animwink:

....and unfortunately, I have only seen snow once, and didn´t go skiing... maybe next time! ;)

Okay, so I finally got my new gear...and the chance to go skiing. Last Saturday I decided to check out Sugarbush since I'd never been there before. Well, the whole day rocked (although it was really, really cold...like negative temps with even worse wind chills). Anyway, the new gear rocks, but I think its gonna take a while to break in the boots. Haven't tried out the pistons on my bindings yet...that's a whole new thing for me and I'm still trying to get my ski legs back. I couldn't believe how cool Sugarbush was (and to top it all off there was absolutely no lines all day!!)...but its much bigger than I expected. I kept trying to get across the mountain to where the NASTAR course is, but I never made it. Oh well, there's always next time.

Next up on the ski area circuit: Bolton Valley tomorrow. Its supposed to be another cold one, but hopefully not too cold.

I learned to ski at Deer Valley (was staying at Stein Erickson Lodge) at age 39. Since then, I've skied Snowbird, Alta, Steamboat Springs, (where I blew out my knee) Breckenridge, Winter Park, Vail, and Silver Creek (now called Sol Vista) I visited most of them at least twice. I haven't done any Eastern skiing, and would love to make it out to Whistler sometime. My youngest is a real Floridian, and absolutely hates the cold, so a ski trip with him is less than delightful.

I found that my ski experience was quite helpful in navigating WDW while pushing a wheelchair. I just kept adjusting for "downhill skiers" and planned my turns/speed accordingly.

I'm glad you're pleased with your equipment OrangeFan. It seems like you've been getting an awful lot of snow up there. conditions must be good.

I'm going to colorado twice this year -- March and April. Can't wait!! We went to Winterplace in West Va last weekend but it was too crowded to enjoy. I spent that whole day concerned that someone would clobber my 5 year old girl. I skied like an offensive linesman.

I would bet that 90% of the skiers or more were brand new. If it hadn't been so irritating it would have been hilarious.

Just in from the slopes...

awesome day!! The snow is absolutely amazing...I can't remember eastern conditions being this good in years!! Its great to actually ski on nice soft snow instead of our normal crunchy, slippery, hard fake snow/ice.

For all those who mentioned western areas, I too love skiing out west. Unfortunately, I already broke my budget (as well as my vacation days from work) suprising my mom with a trip to WDW last December....I guess there's always next year to re-start the annual trip to the west.
