as Dateline Disneyland pointed out, the queue actually looks like it will be plussed from what we originally saw in the concept art. The ornamental design in the framework looks really good so far. here's the original concept art - compare the lower portion of the structure to what has been built so far

Like the look so far, makes it look more like a carnival pier, no?

Yes, the new pier will be themed to a classic Victorian-era seaside amusement park. The area surrounding SSS will be transformed into Paradise Garden next year, and there is a new music loop on the way that will feature ragtime from the 1910s and 20s.

The new design is terrific. Way better than the orange. I love how going classic and simple can be so much more appealing than a modern makeover.

Although I like the name Silly Symphony Swings, its interesting to note that the cartoon that is represented on the attraction, The Band Concert, was not a Silly Symphony cartoon.

^ nice to see all the detail work going in :) It's coming along nicely. the new observation deck should be a great place to relax and take in the views of the bay.

The new courtyard area outside SSS has received new palm trees, in addition to all the trees that were planted recently. Looks nice!

Looking great! But at the same time, it's kind of a shame that so much time, money, and resources are going into making a carnival ride look nice. Underneath all that make up is still just a swing that goes around in circles. :) A pig in lipstick they say, right?

^ Well, I think the location next to the bay, the new boardwalk, and lighting/sound effects will help make this unique. but yes, it is inherently only a swing ride. though it's not much different from rides at DL like Dumbo, Astro Orbiter, or the Carousel -- prettier versions of traditional rides you can find anywhere..

in the end, it's a fun ride that doesn't take up too much room and adds capacity to the park. no harm done :)

I guess.. it's just that they're, well, lacking in the other areas so one would think that money would have been better spent elsewhere in the park. Not trying to be negative, I personally hated the orange (ok, that sounded negative) and think this really does like great for what it is!

I don't think there's much harm in keeping a few simple rides around. Especially seeing as it keeps in themeing, and generally makes the area look nicer. The carnival style rides are ultimately going to be "open" and can be seen from around the park. As long as they keep them to a few iconic classic rides (Ferris wheel, roller coaster, swings) they make nice scenic elements to complement the bigger, indoor attractions like Midway Mania and the upcoming Little Mermaid.

But, I would like to see them thin out some of the carnie-type rides for more unique experiences.

An update on the swings.. first picture is by donaldduckfan#1, the rest are by MintCrocodile

The entrance still under construction, with a new canopy. They've begun paint work which reveals the color scheme for the attraction.

they've added a few boxes on the posts - possibly speakers. It looks like more will be added here as work progresses (including string lights)

Finally, the latest Backstage Pass magazine (for Annual Passholders) shares more info on Silly Symphony Swings. Here's an excerpt:

"You'll be happy to know that Silly Symphony Swings is as fun to ride as it is to look at. According to Lisa [Girolami, WDI Senior Show Producer], 'Guests will feel as if they are swinging out over the water.' And when they do, they're in for a real treat. 'Under the elevated attraction, a new lower deck affords beautiful views of the water and Paradise Pier,' she explained. 'And at night, the attraction is adorned with hundreds of little lights that cast a beautiful reflection out onto the water."

Then why do you want them to keep the swings, ferris wheel, and coaster?

I think there is a happy middle ground for these sorts of things. The roller coaster, swings, and Ferris wheel are all very prominent elements of the area and look nice as they are, and seeing as the place is themed to an old amusement park, they have a very important role in the aesthetic of Paradise Pier.

But at the same time I don't want the theme to serve as an excuse to have a whole bunch of simple carnival rides. A few is nice, a lot is too much. Just like at Disneyland. You've got your classic Dumbos and Carousel which are cute and fine, but it would be going overboard to fill the park with them.

its a happy medium.

tonight they were taking down the scaffolding along the boardwalk, the lower deck of the structure. getting closer to completion - I wonder if they'll meet the May 29 deadline?
