Shutdown!

Anyone here home today because of the federal government shutdown? I have a lot of friends who are affected. One posted on FB that she wouldn't have bought so much Halloween candy already if she knew she'd be home all day with it. I work in downtown DC but not for unkasam, so I am still here at my desk, hard at work posting on WDWMagic.

(Please keep this non-political or the mods will shut down the thread - no need to offer opinions on whether shutting down government is good or bad, or who's to blame for what.)

We live outside DC and know a lot of people effected. We are indirectly effected as my DH works for a government contractor and the spending freeze previous to this was causing a lot less sales. Luckily my DH is not in a commission based position but we lost a lot of possible performance bonuses he go the past few years since there was less business. Thankfully we budget according to his salary not expect bonuses.

As a 27 year federal firefighter this is my second time involved in a shutdown and this one is bad. At 12:00 today our chief, chief of training and two inspectors were told to go home. We were advised that all of our leave time(days requested off) were cancelled until further notice. We possibly will not be paid next week but all my brothers still come to work it's what we do.
The stress level is pretty high here but we still continue to do our jobs. If you take a day off you loos money and God forbid if one of gets hurt on the job we have no workers compensation to fall back on as there is no one here to put in our claims so no work no pay.
Never seen it this bad. Been doing some serious soul searching and wondering after 27 years and see what our Government has done to this country and us it might be time to go..

This is awful! they kept telling us only nonessential jobs would be effected. Since when is firefighting nonessential?

Did they shut down again, lol? Oh, those wacky government kids.

I don't watch the news and don't know WHAT is going on. But I know they'll be back and they will be paid for the time they didn't work.

No way the federal government puts itself out of business, lol.

They did this about twenty years ago - shut down for a while. They came back and were paid for the time they didn't work.

My DS is affected and may not be able to join us next week, but his family will still be able to come. He's in the USAF and has been told that all leave may be cancelled.

As for knowing full-blown what is going on...I'm a bit like @luv ... I had to stop watching the news because it was too stressing. I like being nice more than I like knowing what is going on every minute of the day. I get enough news from blurps on the net and will dig further if something catches my attention...watching it day-to-day...not for me.

But I know they'll be back and they will be paid for the time they didn't work.

Actually all those furloughed are no longer getting paid and will not be. Furloughed = instant laid off. For those who are still working but told no pay they will receive that pay.

Its horrible.. All stateside commissaries closed at end of business today. Base libraries are closed. Personnel all over laid off. Clinics running on skeleton crews as civilians are furloughed. Active duty military are ensured a paycheck however retirees and disabled will not be paid at the end of the month if it continues on for very long.

I predict that they will be paid. They'll all take time off and they'll all be paid for it later.

Do you not remember them saying these same things 20 years ago? I do. I'm that old, lol.

They said people wouldn't get paid and widows wouldn't get Social Security checks...but the checks went out and everyone got paid for the time they didn't work.

Fret not. :)

I am sorry but I do believe payment will not be forthcoming to many when things re-open. The furlough letter says without pay. And since there has already been several furlough days already I really don't see us getting paid. I do know it says that vacation days will be canceled upon return and those days applied to this shutdown as a way to have some pay. However for those have used the days already .....

I have someone in my house (son) who has been furloughed ( works at cape Canaveral air station) and one ( daughter) who is waiting to see if she has a job ( part time on Patrick AFB but as of tonight still has a job but her bosses boss and the bookkeeper was furloughed.. no one know what is going on). And according to everyone it is without pay and it will not be coming. The military base here has been hit very hard.

I do remember the 21 day shut down 17 years ago. Active duty then and I remember the we are not getting paid how do we buy groceries freak out.

so at this point I agree to disagree on different points and I say good night. I am tired and need sleep.

I hope that you're wrong and that it works out for you the way it did for everyone last time. I wasn't trying to argue with you and am sorry if you took it that way.

I seriously know almost nothing about whatever they're doing...only what I heard in Jimmy Kimmell jokes. I assume it's to do with this Obamacare thing, about which I also know almost nothing.

Just going by precedent.

Good luck. :)

I work & live next to a popular national park which is now closed due to the shutdown. October is normally a very popular month for our area with leaf-lookers. Not a good time at all for this to happen. I know our ordeal is minor compared to those losing paychecks over this, so I probably shouldn't gripe.

I work in a professional office and there are many patients who come to my office who are suddenly told to stay home. One woman in particular was telling me on Monday that if the shutdown happens, she's without work and her husband, who is supposed to start a job with the federal govt next Monday, will not be able to. His unemployment ends on the fourth. There will be no income whatsoever for the length of the shutdown, regardless if they get paid afterwards or not. Bill collectors don't care about things like that. Or, mortgage companies.

It's only affecting my office in the number of people from the those departments who aren't coming in now...I'd say easily five to ten people per day. So yeah, it is a little bit of a hit, but that's business.

Personally speaking it doesn't affect me much. I'm still wishing that sallie Mae will tank. For selfish reasons :)
