Trip Report Shrouded In A Daft Disguise *COMPLETED*

Two weeks ago today, I returned home from the most surreal Disney vacation I have ever experienced.

During my last visit in February, I couldn’t have imagined having to wear a face mask and have my temperature taken before being allowed into a park. “Social distancing” wasn’t part of my vocabulary. Hand sanitizer was something I carried in a little bottle in my purse, not something in giant containers at the entrance/exit of every attraction.

No park hopping? No Fastpasses? No FIREWORKS :jawdrop: ?!! Not even on my radar screen.

Like a bolt out of the blue, the pandemic struck and life was dramatically altered. For everyone. And there is no Magic Mirror to tell us when it will be over. For me the pandemic has been a reminder to take nothing for granted ~ and that there can still be joy in the darkest days.

My name is Tuvalu and I have been a WDW annual passholder for nearly 25 years. I was raised on Disney and so were my children. The parks have always been my “escape” from real life. Could they still be an “escape” in the midst of a pandemic? After months of quarantine, I was ready to find out.

My daughter Em was my travel buddy. My husband Woody had reservations, but not for our safety. He was concerned we’d struggle with the restrictions and disappointment with all the changes. He wanted us to come back happy and wasn’t sure we would. Truthfully, I wasn’t sure we would either. After much research and due diligence, Em and I felt prepared to embark on a vacation with few expectations.

Full disclosure ~ I‘ve wrestled with writing a report of our trip. The pandemic and subsequent events have caused much division on this Disney fan forum. I’ve always considered the trip reports section to be a “safe space” and hope it stays that way. My goal is to provide entertainment to the reader, nothing more.

With that in mind.....

Tuesday, July 21

Let’s see.....I finished Day 2 of my July vacation with Em back on page 10.

An August trip with Woody caused a three page interruption.

To refresh your memory ~ Em and I spent the afternoon at the MK, moved into our Copper Creek 1-bedroom villa and had a delicious dinner at The Wave.

Continuing now with Day 3.....

We awakened very refreshed and enjoyed Entenmann’s finest for breakfast. Of course we had step outside and admire our lovely view.

Notice the section markings in the pool? I’m curious if the lifeguards use them for safety purposes. I never noticed them before.

Em and I weren’t going to let the sunshine go to waste so we suited up and claimed our chairs at the quiet pool shortly before 9 am.

We did not have the pool to ourselves for very long. An extended family of at least 15 arrived, followed shortly by other families with kids. While the pool had plenty of space for everyone, it seemed busy for mid-morning. But with two parks opening later than in the past (and the possibility that some folks were having a “resort only” trip), it made sense.

The migration to the feature pool began a few minutes prior to 11 am. The “quiet” pool was once again quiet.

Since there was no poolside food or beverage service, I walked over to Geyser Point Bar and Grill to order lunch. The quick service window was closed and I had to place our food order with the bartender. He told me to return in 10-15 minutes for pick up. On my way back to the pool, I noticed big black rain clouds were forming. Em and I moved our stuff to an umbrella table and managed to finish lunch before any rain began.

Em’s Bison Burger was moist and flavorful, and the house-made chips were crunchy and not overly salted.

I was very happy with the kid’s Finger Foods meal which I have enjoyed on previous visits.

As much as we wanted to linger longer, we decided to play it safe and go the room. Those clouds would be brewing up a storm soon.

We watched the rain arrive from our balcony. Em then decided to try out the jetted tub while I stayed outside and gave Woody a quick call.

We had just hung up when I thought I heard a knock on our door. I opened the sliding glass balcony door and completely startled a male janitor. He was very flustered and said, “I’m just here to do a room check. We’re supposed to do it when the room is empty. I’ll come back later.”

“It’s fine,” I replied. “You can do it now.”

“Umm, I guess I’m already inside....” He did a quick look around the kitchen/living area and left. The room security check is supposed to include emptying the trash cans, but I could tell he wanted to get out of our villa ASAP. It was just as well, since Em was behind the closed bathroom door.

Here’s how room cleaning is handled now for cash stays. Someone will enter your room daily for a security check, even if you opt-out of housekeeping. (You receive nada for opting out.) Every other day you receive “light cleaning” which amounts to emptying trash and replacing towels. No bed making, no vacuuming, no wiping of counters, no replaced amenities. “Your room received enhanced cleaning before your arrival,” was the answer I was given when I challenged Disney’s definition of “light cleaning.”

The more you know. 🙄

It rained and rained and rained. Em and I had a park pass for DHS so we ventured out anyway.

We had a private bus ride to the Studios (which was nice) but we were dropped off at the furthest bus bay (which was not so nice.)

It was long, wet walk to the entrance. I was surprised to see how far back the physical distancing markers were.

Em was wearing running shorts so she was not pulled aside for additional screening.

I sent the following picture to Woody with the caption, I think we missed the rapture!
