Should Space Mountain go down if Peoplemover is down? Discuss.

As a long time Disney fan and a former CM I'm all about "good show" at Disney. We were there 12/30-1/8 during a VERY busy time of year. I was able to get fastpasses for Space Mountain several times and one night that we were riding it, I noticed that Peoplemover was 101 (down) with the work lights on inside their track at Space Mountain and there was a LOT of light pollution inside the ride.

I've ridden space mountain more times than I can count and I've always wanted to ride it with the lights on, but honestly, with the light pollution from Peolemover it was just bad show. You could see parts of the SM track, you could see the peoplemover stopped and not working. Not a very good experience IMO if you've never ridden it before.

Now I get Disney was VERY busy and Space is one of the most popular rides at MK but I'm 99% sure if Peoplemover is 101 (especially with the work lights on) then Space should be 101 as well and vice versa.

Just my $.02

I went crazy taking pix and video when we were on peoplemover and space was 101 with lights on. But I do think the reverse might be different. You're moving fast enough on Space that you probably don't get a good look at things, and the light pollution would disrupt the immersion.

I guess the question is would you rather not get to ride Space at all, or still get to ride, just not full immersion?

yeah, imo, for something as popular as sm, the cap hit (and its consequences) wouldn't justify slightly diminished show on a forty-year-old ride; i'd also wager the vast majority of guests would prefer to ride with a little light pollution than not at all.

an addendum to the orig question could be '... and does your perspective change with tron next door?'

I’ve ridden SM with the Peoplemover lights on, I thought it was pretty neat, however it was practically a walk on at the time and I had already ridden it a few times that day so I wasn’t bothered at all but I can see people who have waited an hour or more and it’s their first time on it being annoyed.

I rode the people mover when SM was down, and the creepy feeling I got from seeing it exposed was more than interesting. It's so UGLY with the lights on. I don't think, however, that Disney should shut anything down unless it's needing help.

Riding the Peoplemover when Space is down with the lights on is very cool. But I can see the OP view about Space when the Peoplemover's lights are on. Space is best when it's dark - the darker the better!

The purist in me says it should close. The geek in me says it should stay open - ride failures are the best thing that can happen on a ride!

Also, two further thoughts: chain closures are yet another reasons for Disney to not built multiple rides on top of each other, which is a shame, it always looks great. And Space was much brighter in the good old days, for once today's bad show is yesterday's normal (a complete opposite to pretty much everything else!).

Certainly. not. The lights being on wouldnt have detracted from the ride experience for me at all. Maybe they should have covered the area that let the view happen, but it wasnt enough of a reason to shut down SM and turn away so many guests and ruin the opportunity to ride the attraction.

True Dis nerds love SM with any lighting - - - - First timers will def have their experience tarnished a bit.
still cool - I think both should be left running :)

I love PM & SM, love them both a TON. I just returned from DL and after riding SM there, my mind exploded, I just absolutely loved their version of SM. I go back to WDW the first week of March and am curious how my ride on SM is going to compare...

OP's question, leave it running and add to the uniqueness...
