SG detection, capture, and punishment

As I rode through living with the land, Splash Mountain, PoTC, Jungle Cruise, and other open boat rides, it seemed like it would be remarkably easy to simply hop out of the boat and walk around on the sides of the attractions where all the scenery is. My question is how do the ride operators detect a foolish guest doing something like this and what happens after that? Do you send in some burly guys with tasers to take them down? After they are captured, how are they punished? Is it an automatic ban from the parks?

I have never seen anyone do this, but I'm sure someone has over these many years of park operation. Has anyone seen something like this happen? :D

A couple of years ago a guy decided to get out on Splash Mountain. He fell and hit his head and died of his injuries... maybe that's how they detract people from getting out and walking around.

Jungle Cruise - you would get seen by your skipper. But he'd probably laugh at the attempt.

Most attractions have intrusion alarms strategically placed. I'm sure that if you were actually walking around inside an attraction that you would be escorted out of the park.

When they had the problem with people walking around in Spaceship Earth I believe those that were caught were banned... I'm not sure if it was a permanent ban or not.

This reminds me of a bit of trivia about the parks.
There have been zero official deaths at WDW.
From what I've heard, medical staff have been instructed to not declare someone to be dead until the body is off property.

Yep, intrusion alarms will sound at most attractions. Few guests try it - what's the point? It's dangerous and foolhardy.

Haha. You know, me and my girlfriend were wondering the same thing the other day while we were on the subject of WDW and planning our trip. What if there is a guest that gets out of control and requires to be taken down. Do they give him a hug first? Tell him to have a magical day? Give him cotton candy after sticking him in a cell? :D

With the Haunted Mansion, I believe the doom buggies are pretty high off the gorund but I also heard that the floor has mats that set off an alarm if someone steps on them.

Yes, there have been people who have died at the World but they allegedly haven't actually been pronounced dead until they were off property; or so the legend goes.

Actually in theory, until someone is pronounced dead, they aren't dead. So because a medical examiner officially prounounces death (usually) at Celebration Hospital which is off property, no one can die on property. I mean it's a technicality... but in theory it works...

Right, because you need a medical examiner or a coroner to do that. You may die in a traffic accident, too, but you probably won't be pronounced dead until you arrive at a hospital.

Most dark rides if not all use an infared light system to watch in the dark. If you take the time for instance you will see an example when you come out of the tunnel in Space Mtn. where the CM's sit and monitor the systems, you'll see a group of tv's with different views. Also if you look around on the TTA when you go through the tunnels in the dark you'll see the red lights behind you every so often. Yes big brother is watching. :lookaroun:lookaroun

About 10 years ago, we were watching Splash Mountain on the bridge and a few knuckleheaded 12-14 year old boys decided to stand up during the big drop. So they figured it would be a good idea to jump off the ride after the drop where it is flat and the ride walls are lower-near the bridge. Well they took their picture during the drop and a CM came running with their photo and immediately went looking for them. Another CM told us when they were found, they would be escorted out and banned for a period of time.

Geez. Works how? I mean, the point behind this ridiculous urban legend is that Disney avoids "bad press" by never having anyone "officially die" on property, right? But since, as other posters have pointed out, there are many stories in the press about people who have died at WDW, or died as a direct result or injuries sustained at WDW, how exactly is the bad press avoided?

No, I meant that in theory it works because some claim that no one has died on disney property. I'm not saying that it works practically... I live about 15 minutes from Disney World, if something goes down, you will hear about it. The Orlando Sentinel will pick it up and the tourists will talk it up too.

It doesn't really "work" but Disney can claim that no one dies on property because they aren't declared dead until they're off property. It's circumstance really, but that's how it's done. However, if someone dies on property, you'll know they died while at Disney... for example... the kid who died after riding Mission: Space. Maybe he was declared dead at Orlando Regional or Celebration, but nobody cares about that story. The people say "He died in Epcot."

In response to the OP, Living with the Land is monitored via camera by a CM. You can see them sitting behind a console in the little area between the barn theater and the entrance to the Tropics greenhouse.

Yesterday at EPCOT, SSE went down while our group was in the descent and a male CM walked past us about 5 minutes into the "ordeal" muttering something about "some idiot" and "sunglasses"

We are thinking "some idiot guest" may have dropped their sunglasses which caused the ride to stop. Dunno if the idiot got out to retrieve the glasses or what, but the whole grumpy CM comment caused a rippling of mirth in our group for hours post-ride.
