Selfie sticks - is this a thing at WDW yet? Disney clarifies policy

It's bad show. Enforce the policy outside the gates, not in the queue of one of your marquee and best-themed attractions. I don't object to the sign per se, but I don't like the location.

The same ride has other warning/saftey signs including ones for exits, FP+, no smoking and what not to do while on board the trains. This one falls into that category and if it's necessary to get the message across, than so be it.

It's not in a position as if it's telling you what to do once you're on the train. It's smack in the middle of the queue.

I just got back from a week in Grand Tetons and Yellowstone and the number of selfie sticks I saw was just incredible. The worst part was watching people use them to take photos of themselves in front of beautiful natural wonders like geysers, thus blocking everything of interest behind them. Why even bother? Or trying to take selfies with the bison or elk - Darwin's law at its finest...

I guess I don't see the appeal of a selfie - I'd rather have a photo of where I've been, not my face filling most of the frame.

Then it shouldn't be allowed in the park, period. When I visited in April they really didn't seem like a problem but if it's a legitimate safety risk they should be gone entirely.

I think this is one of those things that should have been addressed at the start. At this point? IDK what can be done.

Ban them all you like, people aren't going to listen. Tell people not to use them on rides, they're not going to listen.

Short of kicking people out of the parks or taking them away, IDK what Disney can do?

I mean that same argument can be made for firearms.

Well, let's see them outlaw it and enforce it. That video from earlier where they stopped the ride? Would've been great to see them evac the dude with the stick (and possibly his party) and take them off the ride then let the other guests finish and re-ride for their inconvenience.

Should they outlaw it, they'll have to stick to it and most importantly... GIVE THE CM'S THE POWER TO CONFRONT AND HANDLE THE SITUATION. Security can't be everywhere and there's only so many managers. The frontline CM's are going to have to be empowered to handle this.

Basically, to go along with what @PhotoDave219 said though... Disney is just going to have to do the best they can along they way now. They didn't see the ramifications of this device early enough to stop it before it started. So they're doing what they can to try and keep people safe.

Ok I will share my view on this. My daughter is a CM that works at Thunder. I know that the selfie sticks have been an issue for quite a while on there. They constantly tell guests to store them before they enter the ride, while in queue and they are still telling them to put them away while on the ride. And I can tell you that if they have to spiel to put the selfie stick away more than once, the ride gets stopped and the guests are then evacuated. It's a shame that this has to happen and that there are so many selfish people who just choose not to follow the rules. Disney has always had the rules of keeping everything inside of the vehicles at all times. (hands, arms, feet and legs) Selfie sticks are not an exception to that rule.

This is the key. It's that entitled mentality coming back that "I paid XXXXX to come to Disney World and I'm going to do what I want in whatever manner I want, and there's no rule that applies to me.".

If we can't get people to not take flash photos on dark rides, getting them to stop using selfie sticks is going to be far more difficult, lol.

This has to be such a headache for them.
I think the offenders are of the mindset that they are in control. What they fail to realize is as soon as they board a ride they are handing all control of their environment off to Disney. Things twist, spin, go dark. That stick may not be a hand that can get sliced off, but sooner or later one will get spun around and whipped right into another rider's face.
