Selfie sticks - is this a thing at WDW yet? Disney clarifies policy

It's only a matter of time before someone runs into someone else because they aren't paying attention and the someone that got run into cleans the clock of the selfie stick owner, WITH THE SELFIE STICK!!! Then the person who ran into someone else, after getting beat by the person they ran into, is going to get all upset because their phone/iPad/device fell off the stick and the screen shattered.

Did a lawyer invent this thing? If one did, that's a heck of business booster, lol.

I remember seeing them all around Epcot back before Christmas. It was the first time I had seen more than one anywhere. I'm hoping its a fad, and in a year or so they will be old news.

I was working a series of concerts in between Christmas and New Year's - the sticks were all over. Very annoying when you are running camera trying to get a good shot and a stick is right in your frame... Cameras were positioned so we shoot above heads and most signs being held up. Unfortunately, the sticks reach higher.

Yup. Forget kids on shoulders, this just "reached a new height" with that, lol.

As I said, it's only a matter of time until the inevitable happens. With the way that people can get rowdy around the time of fireworks, all it's going to take is one person to walk in late, stick up the selfie stick in front of people who camped for an hour or two, and you'll see devices and poles hitting the ground.

I would definitely be interested to know why the Animal Kingdom and the Animal Kingdom Lodge (both Jambo and Kidani) haven't already banned the sticks. It makes sense since if you're on the Kilimanjaro Safari or have a Savannah view room and your device falls off the stick or the stick itself falls with device in tow, that's very hazardous for the animals.

And here is a CNN article about it called "Why the Selfie Stick Must Die"

http://www.cnn.com/2015/02/16/travel/selfie-stick-opinion/
The CNN article should warn Disney to get with it and ban the ridiculous intrusive sticks. They screen for glass and weapons already at security. They need to add these things before a fight breaks out when a user hits someone with one or sticks it front of a guest watching a parade or show. The guest may decide to suggest a new place the user should store it. The ban should also include the iPads and the like. Post signs at the entrance as well for the privledged people who think it does not apply to them. Make announcements before shows and parades as well. The longer they wait to get it under control the worse it will be.

I'm glad you said about shows and parades. How long before someone tries to "out selfie stick" someone else and actually disrupts a performer in a parade or show. It's going to turn ugly when performers in shows and parades run into these things. As a drum corps fan and marching band fanatic, I can't help but see someone trying to shove a selfie stick in the face of one of the members of the Main St. Philharmonic and the band member totally making a fool of said person. Some of those guys in the MSP were Drum Corps International members back in the day and they haven't forgotten parade etiquette. To those unfamiliar, that means, if something's in your way, you just go right through it when marching.

As we are all speculating, it's going to get ugly, but who knows, Disney may see selfie sticks as a chance to make a new product just in time for the upcoming Star Wars Weekends and have, you guessed it: Light Saber Selfie Sticks!!!! They'll even be able to be turned on and off and extend at the push of a button and come in different colors depending on which side you're on.

Our building security guards confiscated an innocent enough looking 'cane' . Seemed simple enought at first appearance but when the elderly woman (80's) was asked to put it in the X-ray machine, she started to get a bit mouthy. Surprise, surprise, the scan revealed when you pulled the handle and clicked a concealed trigger, a lovely 36 inch dagger sprang out. Our building is home to various law enforcement branches and judicial offices so that did not go over so well.

Anything can be made into a weapon....unfortunately.

Tired, hot, sense of entitlement, impatient, broke from paying for the trip, sore feet, sore back, and now somebody puts a selfie stick in the way of the perfect view of the fireworks you've waiting over an hour to stake out.....oh heck no....

Or worse yet, if two people, both with selfie sticks, start fighting about who is blocking whom, and some sort of "sword fight" breaks out with the selfie sticks.

...and it just happens to occur near Star Tours.

...and Duel Of The Fates just happens to be playing over the speakers.

That. Would. Be. Epic. (And hilarious, but mostly epic).

See the last paragraph of my last post. It's a cash cow for Disney if they want to turn and look at the green and not how dangerous these things can/will be.

Don't forget the KS in AK. A Selfie Stick could be used to hold some sort of food item as an idiot guest tries to feed the animals.

The way to get at Disney for anyone visiting soon is to complain to guest relations that an idiot with one of those weapons ruined the parade or fireworks or want ever and you demand compensation. Enough of those complaints and the wheel starts squeaking.

In all seriousness it is going to get bad. Hope someone at Disney reads the CNN article and gets ahead of the problem.

Good point...we saw some moron get yelled at for leaning out of the truck. He was trying to offer a giraffe who was very close some fruit. Idiot.

So, I've seen these things, but haven't invested much time in truly investigating them. Are they a solid pole? Do they expand out? I mean, I could see someone saying they are dangerous if used defensively...but I also watched a guy choke someone with a rope, much like the ropes dividing lines at theme parks.
I can totally see them banning them because people can't see a parade, or blocking a museum art piece...
But what is really dangerous? Not debating, just asking!

Whats dangerous is the risk of injury to the performers or other viewers. The sticks expand up to 5 feet I think. So if you have people going for that "unattainable" parade picture or the uninhibited firework photo, eventually someone is going to get bumped or lose grip on the stick and it's going to strike someone else. Thus in turn causing big problems.

Remember, common sense isn't so common amongst those trying to attain the perfect vacation.

I understand your thinking, but, I've used gopros with a chest rig when snowboarding. There is a time and place...them parks aren't it.

Oh that's totally fine bc that's what they're built for.....snowboarding, motocross, etc. But not for some fool to wear it to show of his latest fashion of GoPro products. Lol

Ahh. I wasn't thinking about some one dropping one and it hitting someone or a performer. I was thinking more along the lines of how I feel when someone holds up an iPad in front of me....your right, They are dangerous to others not aware they could fall on them.
