Selfie sticks - is this a thing at WDW yet? Disney clarifies policy

You've been hit by strollers on just about every trip and done nothing. I'm curious the number of times you've ACTUALLY been hit by a selfie stick.

Maybe if people are such a big problem for you all, a place as crowded and diverse as WDW isn't for you. Just stay in your little bubble where no one can bother you.

No, it's not okay with me but neither is some oblivious parent running their stroller into my leg, but it happens. I be the bigger person and move on.

You use a selfie stick don't you? ;)

And you know, as long as no one holds one of the stupid things in front of me during a parade, show, fireworks, etc. I don't personally care. But from all of the comments here, it will happen, and I will say something. My personal opinion is that since so many places (such as the Smithsonian) have already banned them, Disney really should do it before it gets out of hand. Again, just my opinion. Oh, and as far as strollers go. Yes, I would LOVE to see them banned as well. It's getting so bad that you can hardly move around in certain areas anymore. We didn't see this twenty years or even 15 years ago, so I wonder what has changed? I don't know the answer, but I do think it's weird that going to the parks in the 90's and early 2000's, we hardly ever saw a stroller. It was the exception. Now, they are everywhere.

As for all the strollers... for families that fly, it gets the priority boarding or at least family boarding depending on the airline.

I've never seen someone with a monopod holding it above their head or out away from them to take a selfie. I also have never seen anyone but a CM use a tripod, though I have to admit, I've never looked for them, either. The problem with the selfie sticks seems to be that it is mostly a younger crowd using them that have no idea what basic respect for other people is. Since Disney cannot weed out only those that don't care about anyone else, they will end up banning them the first time they are sued when someone gets hit with one. It WILL happen. As a matter of fact, if someone hits me or my family with one, I will absolutely sue Disney, but not for money. I will sue for a ban on them from the parks.

I used a tripod on my last trip. I photographed Illuminations in EPCOT. You'd never know I did it though because I was set up in a place where I was out of the way. For people that use tripods and monopods in the other parks (MK especially), they also seem to try and find the back rail to set up at. The people using selfie sticks aren't thinking about others, unlike most people who are actually trying to take decent photos. They just want their picture, at that exact time, regardless the situation going on. Besides, when was the last time you heard of someone getting hit with a tripod or monopod because they were holding it out into the parade route or up in the air to get a better shot?

My first experience was in San Francisco this past fall. Wow, they were everywhere!!! I do carry a Go pro with a mini tripod about 2.5 feet tall but don't use it in this way.

That's been my point all along!

We're on our way home after three days at MK and one day at each of the other parks. I had read this thread on our way down last weekend and was expecting to see them everywhere, and to be completely annoyed my them. In fact, I forgot about them the first couple of days. We hit HS and AK first. The first time I saw one was the morning of our first day at MK, walking in after getting off the monorail. The guy had it held down at his side next to his leg to keep from knocking into anyone. I only saw a few more after that over the next four days. I never saw anyone using it in a disrespectful manner. Maybe this was an exception to the rule, but I was pleasantly surprised.
I did see a seagull totally dive bomb a teenager to knock an ice cream cone out of his hand. Those seagulls are crazy!

Not Disney-related, but I thought it was worth a share. It still has to do with narcissism & tourists doing stupid things.

Two California tourists arrested for carving their initials into Rome's Colosseum
  • The women, aged 21 and 25, left their tour group on Saturday
  • They used a coin to carve eight-inch high letters J and N into the wall
  • Charged with 'damage on a building of historical and artistic interest'
  • Built in the first century CE, the Colosseum is a World Heritage Site
"Two American tourists were arrested for carving initials into Colosseum in Rome.

Before they were spotted, the women, 21 and 25, were able to carve a J and an N into a brick wall on the first floor of the west side of the Colosseum.

After carving the eight-inch high letters, the women posed together for a selfie."

Time to release the lions!

Has anyone else seen these things yet? Suddenly, they are all over NYC.

In case you don't know what I'm talking about, they are these long metal sticks that seem to extend about 4 feet or so. You attach your phone at the end and take a selfie.

I was at Target the other day and saw these in the camera section. I also saw some tourists down here in Florida (Southwest Florida - Naples/Fort Myers) use them on the beach. Genius idea for those "selfiephiliacs", but annoying for those whose heads are going to be the target of a good bopping from the selfie stick. Ugh!

I had an experience on Kilimanjaro Safari yesterday. There was someone 2 rows behind me with a GoPro-on-a-stick and for nearly the entire ride he had the camera stuck at least 3 feet out the side of the ride vehicle. It really, surprised me that the safari guide never said a single word about it. As long as CM's are not admonishing this behavior it will be considered acceptable by all guests.

There is a possibility that the driver didn't see it based on the position of the mirrors.

I was driving a safari one time and a guy climbed onto the back bumper and the driver didn't know until the truck behind him radioed him. That was a fun afternoon listening to the radio...

I can't speak for any others who've worked there, but had I seen it (and they existed 16 years ago) I would have asked them to retracted it for this reason alone:
Too bad it didn't get eaten...
Ostriches will eat anything...

I don't own a selfie-stick nor I'm planning to buy one, but I don't get bothered with it. It doesn't poke my eye or anything. Some I know just follow the hate trend, but to those who really have a good reason, I honestly want to know why.

There's a time and place for selfie sticks. There are those who have said on this thread that they use them for certain things where your hands are needed to do other things. They put their GoPro's on them and off they go. The same can't be said for using these sticks in the crowded parks at WDW. It's a far bigger hazard to more people at WDW than an individual who is by themselves on a mountain or something.
