Security check changes

if u dont like to wait in the lines. dont carry crap to the parks. thats what i do. or get there early. I know this may be an inconvenience for families with children, but the rest of us put up with your strollers smashing into the backs of our legs all day long and taking up the extra space on the parking trams, so... deal.

I don't see what the big deal is about bag checks, they will be a part of life...that is how it is. I agree they don't check good enough but on the other hand, they might deter a lone person who was out there working by himself. Nothing is fool proof. I like the Paramount Park near Richmond. Even before 9/11 they put you though metal detectors and really checked your bags. I hope this year the Paramount Park here in NC starts checking.

Hey MainStreet USA...since when is any 5 minutes at WDW a lousy 5 minutes???

Yeah, I know, ha ha. But still, I'm jsut sick of hearing "Oh this is a tragedy, it takes soooo long, waaaaaa, waaaaaa."

I'd be willing to bet that most of the people on here have never waited longer than five minutes at the checkpoints. Like you said, it just SEEMS like it takes forever. It's just like waiting for an elevator or at a stoplight. Seems like you're sitting there forever right? Well, you're not. An extremely long stop light lasts a whopping 1 minute. And the average time a person spends waiting at an elevator is 24 seconds. Seems like 5 minutes to me, for sure, but it isn't.

My point is just that it isn't as bad as it seems. Lets all relax and focus on something else besides what Disney can't control. They're doing it this way because this is the best way to do it. I've yet to hear anyone come up with a reasonable idea in this thread.

Besides, it isn't like they just went with the first idea that popped into their head. I can guarantee Disney had about a hundred different options, and then picked this one, because it's the best way.:)

Let's see, a few observations.

First, when we were at the parks during spring break last year, we had our camera bags open with the cameras out, our belt packs open, all the compartments on the backpack open, and breezed right through all the security checks. They even thanked us for being so cooperative.

Second, let's look at the terroist himself. Current dominant profile based on actions against the U.S., white male of middle-east ethnicity, age 18-35. Don't think for a moment that Disney doesn't profile. And all profiling does is increase the focus of surveillance on a selected individual or individuals. Like watching someone more closely is a big violation of their rights.

Third, based on the above, anyone stop to think that having checkpoints before walking into the park is a good way to slow people down, and make some observations by people a little more trained than the checkpoint CMs?

Fourth, I don't prefer the two alternatives to what Disney is currently doing. One alternative is no checks at all. The other alternative is metal detectors, emptying pockets, removing socks and shoes, and if a suspicious bulge is seen (minds out of the gutter), a pat down or *gasp* escort to a secure area for a strip-search.

Just a couple of notes on security this week. I got back just an hour ago, and left Magic Kingdom at noon today. When I got to WDW on th 14th, security was what I'd seen last year. However, after the bombing of Iraq started, it did seem that they were a lot more diligent in checking bags, plus what appeared to be military helicopters were seen overhead during the day. All of Central Flordia is on high alert due to the fact that a suspected terrorist was sighted in the area in the past few days, and his picture was on televison several times a day.

Oh, and we saw on CNN that The U.S. had declared 4 "no fly" zones in the country after the attacks began. They are NYC, Washington DC, Disneyland, and DisneyWorld. That may explain the helicoptors.

Any way, that's what I noticed in the past few days.

I know this isnt related too much to this threa but I found it strange when going through the bag checks that if you have a disney plush bag, (My girlfriend had an minnie and my sister had a pooh bag) that they said they dont want to check inside the bag. This happened at all parks, not wanting to give people hints how to get around the bag checks just found it strange.

I just got back from WDW yesterday :( and it doesn't seem to me that the bag checks actually make you wait longer than you would if they weren't there. Why? Because the real hold-up is at the turnstiles! Even after we get through the bag check, we still invariably get stuck behind a family who doesn't know how the turnstiles work, doesn't know that you need a ticket for every family member, can't figure out how to use the finger scanner, etc.

Thus, if you were just going to wait in line at the turnstile anyway, the bag check really doesn't make you wait any longer! Just think of it as your first pre-show of the day!

However, if you really want to speed up your trip through the bag check, stop for a minute and observe the guards. Some are really thorough, making guests take off packs, removing items until they could see the bottom of the bag, etc. Others will wave through anyone with an open bag and a smile. Pick a line where the CM seems to be moving people more expeditiously. And don't forget to smile! I saw a lot of people who were griping to the CMs (like it's their fault!) who then got their entire bags searched! 8 times out of ten, if I arrived at the counter with my pack open and my camera out, the CM would just wave me through and tell me to have a nice day!

As for it all just being a show...as a stockholder, I want the average Joe to feel secure enough to come to Disney World! :)

The bag checks do catch items not wanted in the Parks, you may think they are always looking for weapons, but that is not the case. There have been many weapons discovered and turned over to local authorities in the past months.

The latest I'm heard of was from a 15 year old girl ....

Here is a question regarding the security issue...

Has anyone heard of a person actually caught by this system attempting to come into one of the parks with a weapon or terrioristic device...etc? I was just wondering.

I agree, the mother with that diaper bag really looks threatening to me too...
