I am mad at this school district. At the beginning of June my youngest DD brought home her report card and it said she didn't pass the 3rd grade. Well I called the school to see if I could get her to summer school or hold her back. They told me there was a mistake on her report card and she did pass. I was not happy because she still only passed with very low grades. Well now she is really failing 4th grade with horrible grades. and they want to put her in special ed. classes. I am saying no. I told them I didn't trust the system and told them about the report card. The assistant Prin. told me "We have certain policies to go by and she passed all of them, so we had to pass her." I looked at them and now she is really struggling and you say to put her in this program. They told me" Well it isn't really special ed. and we can have a meeting to see if she needs to stay in." Again I looked at them (there were 4 of them. plus me) I said what if I want to get her out. I know I have rights but face it there are 4 of you and only 1 of me. Who do you think is going to win.:brick:
{{hugs}} Susie. That's really, really frustrating. Poor DD :(

((Hugs)) Susan. what kind of special program is it?

It is called "504" They take her out of class to give her more time to work. They also cut her work some so she won't have so much to do.
They put Corey in a program like this and he says it is the worse thing we could have done for him. He didn't learn how to keep up with schoold work on time.

I need to take DS to work. Be back in a few.

:( Oh no. {{hugs}} for DH. And for you

My son called me this morning with a cough and sore throat.
Hope your DH feels better soon.

Thank you - I'm off to Wendy's to get him chicken nuggets/baked potato, as well as lunch for myself. Be back soon!

Do you have a tutoring program in your district, Susan? If she is designated as 'special needs' she is entitled to a free and appropriate public education under federal law. Where the school districts stop is defining 'appropriate'.
If they won't provide assistance, they're liable. I don't really know all the circumstances of your daughter's education though, so I may be misunderstanding.

Wow Susie, I really understand your anger. Since the problem existed at the end of the last school year, she could have been held back or sent to summer school. Instead, the system waited till she started failing this year to address the issue. If you agree to the special ed classes, make sure of your rights as her mother. Follow her progress and make sure the classes are what she really needs and are helping her as they should. If not, pull her out.
Good luck honeybunch!

A 504 plan is similar to an IEP, but gives more flexibility as I understand it. With the advent of the No Child Left Behind, Schools have been pretty much forced to make accomodations for any academic weakness a student displays. I would insist that your daughter be mainstreamed, but allowed to work with a tutor or an aide. 4th grade is a whole new ballgame for a lot of kids - the expectations are much greater, and kids who may be less academically "mature" often have difficulties then.

Morning, Dot & Betty! I'm here...just shopping for photographers. :king: DF's sis says that's one thing we need to get set ASAP. I guess they book up pretty quick and it's one area where you don't want to "scimp" since they're what you'll have forever.

How are you girls this morning?

Edit: Morning Katy!!
Yay! You have the right attitude with that! :D
