I am awful at night photos!! I will have to see if I even have any worth posting.

My camera is set to auto flash and when I take a picture of the castle illuminated it comes out all dark.
SO I tried to change the flash to off, well there is no option. There is a flash, auto flash, and a flash symbol with a circle around it, so I thought maybe the one with the circle around it was no flash. Well I took a pic with the castle with this setting and it came out all crazy like the colors were coming out everywhere and making like scribbly lines (if that even makes sense).

The other day I noticed on my camera, you can turn the dial and one of the things you turn the dial to is called Illuminated Night Scenes. So maybe that is the one, but still, would I turn the flash off for it? And how do I do that? LOL!

I will have to try that one I guess. My camera sucks!
The one with the circle around it does sound like no flash...but the trick with that setting on a digital camera is that you have to be PERFECTLY still.

The illumiated Night Scenes one might be what you want, but once again, you will probably need to be perfectly still, as I can bet it doesn't really use flash and even if it does, you still want to hold really still, otherwise it will look just like the squiggly lines one.

Edit: It's not just your camera which sucks, it's most every digital camera, unless it's a higher end camera.

Ty! I knew you might have some insight.
I used the one with the circle around it a couple times when we were in the woods in PA, because when I used the flash it got all dark. I noticed they were all blurry when I looked at them. I must not have been still. That will be tricky to accomplish.
I know my camera is not high end. I think it's an Olympus and I forget the model number but I know it was not more expensive then $150.
Thanks for the help, I thought I was going crazy. I will have to practice some more. Maybe I better get out that guide book, if I even still have it LOL

no, it's not just you...I have the same problem when I use my digital camera. It takes absolutely awful night shots. To get those shots with your camera, you're either gonna need to set your camera on something or use a tripod, however, I set my camera down on something at Disney for a night shot and it was still a bit blurry, but more in focus than the squiggles.

Are there any digital cameras that work well for these types of things?
I wonder what others in your photo contest have used for their great shots.

The best thing you can do is ask. If you see a shot you like, I'm sure they'll be glad to tell you what kind of camera they used to get the shot and any other aspects about it.
