Say.... What if Avatarland got cancelled?

Bad example. The 2 stories which this land is based on (better the rides) are part of the common memory of the entire western world, part of popular culture. Nearly EVERY ONE knows Jules Vernes and generation after generation his stories are told new again and again.
20.000 LutS and JTTCOTE are not exactly some "hundred years old stories" nobody is interested about anymore. I adored Star Wars and became a huge fan but I also loved the James Mason-movie of JTTCOTE and of course the Disney classic 20.000LutS.

I don't think that Avatar has even remotely the same potential.

Sorry. If you polled 100 people who Jules Verne is, I'll bet you wouldn't get 5 who actually know.

(and this is coming from someone who'd MUCH rather see TDO create something from Verne than Avatar.)

Not what I meant, I meant that if there were no sequels it would fade into history because it was not that entertaining of a movie, But your right when you say that every other commercial will be for Avatar...

Read my last line:
Now, if there were no sequels, yeah you may be right. I doubt too many people would care at all.

That's a quite common misconception. The Massassi rebel base is not on a planet but on a planet-sized moon of Yavin, Yavin IV. Yavin is a gas giant, far too large to be destroyed by the Death Stars primary weapon, which was build to destroy terrestrial planets like Alderaan. And even if it could to it, the Death Star doesn't fire his primary weapon like the guns on it's surface. The enormous energy required for this planet destroying weapon takes a long time to recharge (in ROTJ only weak shots are needed for the rebel ships), so they only have ONE shot.

Oh good grief. I've had this same discussion with a friend of mine who can't seem to win the argument either.

Please direct me to the pages in the Death Star's technical manual that states that the Death Star can not:

a) destroy Gas Giants
b) fire shots in quick succession (yet in ROTJ, we see the Death Star shoot repeated shots at ships)

Moreover, I'm not sure whether it's even stated in the movie that Yavin is a gas giant....

Jules Verne...no, but his stories, yes. Most people would be able to recognize stories such as Journey to the Center of the Earth, Around the World, or 20,000 Leagues.

Come 2015, nobody will remember it... And I will bet with you on that.

The fact that already the only way to jog peoples memories about the movie is by saying it's got the big tree and blue people....

You must know people with really, really short attention spans. The people I know can remember blockbuster movies going back decades. Most of us even remember movies that were released before we were born. You may want to try having conversations with people with less brain damage.

People would know Jules Verne, but if the question was what do they no more about (what they've seen or read) between any Verne story and Star Wars, or Avatar, I'm betting the latter wins out with the masses.

That's one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard.

I don't think at any point in this entire discussion has even the most fiercest Avatar detractor has said that they can't even remember the movie. BUt that was funny though. Thanks for that.

I know that I've already made my stance on this clear (Right Budget = bring on Avatar!) and I'm definitely not trying to be argumentative with you ID, but...what more do you really need to know about the Verne stories than the titles already tell you to be able to enjoy an adventure of them?

I mean really.

Journey to the Center of the Earth: Caves...Dark...diamonds...creatures we haven't seen...probably cold, then very hot...maybe some fire...some ice...definitely some lava...unexplored adventure...

20,000 Leagues....Ocean...submarine...dark...creatures we haven't seen...sea monsters...unexplored adventure

Around the World...fast paced...flying...unexplored adventure...

:lookaroun

I think that using Verne stories makes it much easier to appeal to the masses, leave things open to interpretation instead of what diehard fans (or creators) expect, and there have been so many adaptations of the stories that the possibilities and directions are endless.

Oh, I understand. I brought it up because they were good examples that even less popular/more obscure stories could make great and popular attractions. Like Mysterious Island. They didn't need to be mega movie franchises to invest in them.

I guess my original point was, even if Avatar fades into obscurity, if AvatarLand is awesome, people would still want to see it.

You're probably right. But, I suspect if you polled 100 people, you'd be surprised at how few probably know who J. K. Rowling is either. However, I'd propose that products from both authors are well recognized.

He played J. Jonah Jameson in the Spider-man movies, right? ;)

I'll take that bet. In fact, I'll go all in. All I have to do is find one person, three years from now, that still remembers Avatar. Pretty sure I won't have to leave whatever room I happen to be in when I remember to check.
