Disney has announced that this year's Super Soap Weekend (Nov. 15-16 at Disney's Hollywood Studios) will be the last such event. Instead, ABC will embark on a "Soap Nation Tour" in 2009. That will be several events nationwide in different cities.

"The new year will bring new ways we will involve our stars in more events, in more cities, more often," Brian Frons, head of ABC Daytime, said in a release. The specific events listed are a three-day cruise (from Los Angeles to Mexico), contests with a trip to New York and Broadway Cares and participation in the CMA Music Festival. The release says more "fan experiences" will be announced in the new year.

Disney also released a partial list of stars attending this year's Super Soap. Cameron Mathison (All My Children) will be hosting. Others announced so far are Rebecca Budig, Aiden Turner and Thorsten Kaye from AMC, Erika Slezak, Michael Easton and Kristen Alderson from One Life to Live; and Kelly Monaco, Laura Wright and Jason Thompson from General Hospital. Complete lineups will be released tomorrow.

Super Soap Weekend will tout special clip packages honoring the 45th anniversary of General Hospital, the 40th anniversary of One Life and the 10,000th episode of All My Children.

The nightly street jam will continue and have a special musical number "that honors the final event."

The Web site for the aforementioned cruise is www.rockthesoap.com. I'm noting that some of the soap stars on board aren't even on ABC.

OK, full disclosure, I'm a bit boo-hiss on this development. Maybe that's just my inner Erica Kane. What do you say, readers? (And tune in tomorrow for the complete list of stars).

What a shame...Honestly is this really that big of a deal?

I mean Star Wars weekends is huge. Canceling that would be a big deal. but I just don't see a lot of people going to Disney for this.

That makes sense since they're taking one of the biggest venues for this (ABC Theater) for the American Idol Experience.

Meh. Not a huge loss here for me. Understandably, there are those who will be disappointed, but for myself, and probably for a good majority of guests, this is not a big deal. Thanks for the notice, though.

It is a big thing. People do make trips just down for that and make their own shirts and stuff. I went last year and got lucky enough to get a fast pass to meet the person I'd wanted to go for years to meet. I'm sad that I won't be able to go again but that day all I really did was walk in get the autograph and walk out since it was packed. I think this is a lot like the ESPN the Weekend event just for women and sorta thought it was cool that they did this for Soap fans. O well.

I know that it used to be very crowded at DHS during Soap Weekend. My mom used to take solo trips every year just for soap weekend...she met a lot of great friends through that.

Haven't been during super soap weekend in a few years, we've been arriving the day it ends...and this year we will be leaving the day it starts...so I really don't know if the crowds still come through for this event. It was a lotta fun though, and it used to get some goooood crowds. We have so many pics with all the soap stars, we have video from SSW 2000. Sad to see it go. :(

Speaking of which, There is no mention Of it in the DHS events page and thus far no announcement anywhere. Is this gone too?

Well, with the rumored name change over at WWoS, I wouldn't be surprised to see this head over there with a new slate of events and activities.

Have you ever been to Super Soap Weekend?

I'm a huge ABC soap fan and I've been going every since the first year, and each year the crowds get worse and worse.

Yes, it is that big of a deal to people who watch AMC, OLTL, or GH. :animwink:

Honestly, it makes sense that Super Soap was the first event to get axed. The guests are notorious for being difficult to deal with, and it doesn't offer the same merchandise sales Star Wars does or a nationally broadcasted cross promotional love fest that ESPN The Weekend is.

In future news, Disney is saddened to announce that ECV sales were down in fiscal year 2009. Analysts point towards a select weekend in which there was a drastic dropoff in ECV rentals.

In positive news, broken ankles due to ECV crashes are down!

Well, maybe that's a silver lining. If the crowds were getting worse and worse, then ABC scheduling a mini-tour with the stars, coming to you, will afford some people the luxury of scheduling a trip outside of that very narrow time frame. With Star Wars Weekends, at least the crowds could conceivably be spread out over the coure of 4 to 6 weeks.

And if this means some people don't go to WDW next year...GOOD! MORE PEOPLE OUT OF MY DAMN WAY!!!!
