Is project Gemini worth turining Spaceship Earth into a roller coaster?

You're right, it IS a classic
But alas, it will be leaving the building...and it won't be a roller coaster.

This is the same problem I have got LOL. I have various descriptions that make me think its a coaster type ride, then some indicate EMV, and some Test Track, and also some new thing we havnt seen before.

Seems like moving an updated SE ride into the UoE building would make everyone happy. I am sure the dinos would be happier at AK anyway. Just a thought.

I have'nt voted in the poll because my choice isn't there. I'm hoping they change it, but keep the history of communication theme. I've been sitting here hoping for a Journey to the Center of the Earth type ride for over a year. I have'nt seen Journey in person and I never will, so I'd love to see the ride system at WDW. It goes slow for a while but it has a pretty big drop for some thrill. Putting the Journey ride system inside SpaceshipEarth has so much potential it's scary.

The only real problem I see is location. Why Disney put Epcot's signature attraction 20 yards from the turnstiles is beyond me. It already bottlenecks in the mornings. I'm afraid of how bad it will be in 2007.

Cheers

Welcome to WDWMagic!

However, I still think we need an energy pavilion - the topic of energy is often in the news - despite its 100% relevance in every move we make! :)

Interesting info, Lee...

All I can say is that I too hope that the attraction does not overuse screen technology (i.e. keep the Audio-Animatronics®! )... Just keep the quality, Disney! A screen is 2-D, no matter how fast the attraction vehicle is moving...

That is, unless of course, you've found out a way to make screen technology 3-D, that doesn't involve Guests needing to wear special glasses... ;)

Alas, as people have said in posts above, Time Will Tell ;) (pun intended) ;) :)

Spaceship Earth: EPCOT's Prelude

It seems that most of us are in accord with one notion - - that Spaceship Earth should receive an update, yet retain its quality standards of showmanship. This idea resounds in the narration and story; eye-catching historical, artistic, and sensory details; and effective use of audio-animatronics and intimate sets to tell an inspiring, timeless tale.

It's no coincidence that Spaceship Earth was intended to be one of the first attractions guests experience. By standing at the park's forefront, Spaceship Earth stands as the definitive prelude to the EPCOT experience. . . showing guests what lies at the heart of the park. Spaceship Earth, regardless of the fact that it has been around for nearly 21 years, has always encapsulated the changing spirit of EPCOT. It houses a *now* one-of-a-kind audio-animatronics experience, which should be long celebrated for its effectiveness and its homage to Walt Disney, as well as relates the message which continues to unite the park. . . the vitality of global communication as the force making mankind tick since the dawn of recorded time. The attraction, rather then solely rely on thrills or repetitions of other WDW experiences, reveals what has always thrived at the heart of "Walt Disney's EPCOT" - - both in its theme and the means used to convey this message to park guests of all ages.

At this point, we can only hope that the attraction's update will satisfy the park's need for an exquisitely appropriate "prologue." The Time Racers rumors have not, as of yet, indicated that such an experience will continue into this new millennium. In order to help prevent Spaceship Earth and its meaning from receding into the dust of the ages, we all must take proactive roles in writing to AT&T and Walt Disney World Operations. As grizzlyhall has suggested, AT&T must know how vital its support has been in conveying inspiring messages to EPCOT guests. WDW must also know that we are concerned that Spaceship Earth's shoes may not be properly filled.

Our concerns must be actively voiced. . . after all, we have learned the persuasiveness of substantial guest comments (i.e., JIYI). As the "grand and miraculous spaceship" which stands as EPCOT's symbol in more ways than one, Spaceship Earth and its message must continue to be effectively conveyed throughout Century 21.

Actually....
WDI has some CAVE technology that pretty much does just that.
Keep your eye on DCA's ToT next year, that could be the first application of it.

That's actually what I had in the back of my mind when I wrote that! :)

Time will tell.

By no means did I mean to convey the thought that any replacement would be automatically considered sub-standard. However, I don't understand the need to replace a classic ride with something else. There are other areas of the park that could do with some park development as oppose to removing SSE in it's current form. What I have read of the proposed replacement is vague, and while it does sound interesting I don't see any benefit in removing the ride.

I agree, Discoveryland is the name of Tomorrowland in Disneyland Paris. I prefer future world

Do not take away Spaceship Earth!!! This is the icon of Epcot and truly represents what the park is all about. I'm all for change but some things need to be left alone or just updated.

You know, I'm kinda down the middle on this one... Like most everyone else...

I'd like to see some type of new ride, but with the same topic, communication. Although I don't think we need a roller coaster... even though I'm a huge fan of em. Let's keep the ride that we have, update the ride system and Audio Animatronics, and give it some 'thrilling points' but nothing to the point that it is too thrilling for the whole family.

Personally, I think the ride system is close to a state of disrepair... Even if it was rehabbed, it's still 20 years old... and it will probably still have those nice 'bumpy' parts.

My point... Let's update this baby... give her some type of new ride vehicle, keep the main gist of the ride, and make it technologically advanced.

I actually think its not such a bad idea....
Maybe us (the nutter fans) want things as they are but if disney are slowly losing visitors because of the lack of thrills I think we should accept new changes. I'm sure U all don't want EPCOT gone and if Disney thinks thrills will save the park we should give it a chance!!!

Look how Mission: SPACE is turning out!!! I haven't read about even one disapointmant even though it replaced one of the parks first rides!

So I say....................
Lets give the new Spaceship earth a chance!!!
And after all the thrills will be in the park EPCOT will be able to go back and make nice family rides!!!

I have NO idea what "Time Racers" will be.

But the current Spaceship Earth DOES has two major "issues"- a rickety ride system and a few "dead" scenes.

I'm all for Omnimovers, but the SSE system is a piece of junk. The cars are too small, the noise drowns out the show, and the descent to earth can be downright painful.

So yes, SSE does need a vehicle update.

Also, as great as MOST animatronic scenes are, there are a few unimpressive "dead" spots that would make a great canvas for creating new experiences. In particular, the entry tunnel and caveman projection wall, the Phoenician merchants, Michaelangelo's chapel, the internet light tunnel, and the last portion of the descent.

I'm envisioning the "film" portion of Time Racers to be put in these "transition" areas, and I'm picturing that film to be similar to the old World of Motion "speed rooms".

Such changes would give Spaceship Earth better pacing, new marketability, and yet still keep its original charm.
