runDisney Virtual Running Events

Have I told you lately that I 👍 you?
Another quick update: I just did another run on the treadmill kept it the same speed the entire time. Made it a bit faster to try and make the 16 min a mile pace.

30 Mins- 16:14 Avg Pace 1.85 miles (I guess) and I have to say I’m definitely tired out...hopefully I can push myself a little further but to sustain a 16 minute a mile pace I have to go faster and cannot slow down for any reason...

Maybe it’s my Apple Watch tracking out of wack...but I doubt that.

I’ll keep training but that was tough. Not impossible but tougher then I thought I know this sounds crazy for people who are serious runners.

I would be extremely fearful of getting swept in an in person race. I know I can push myself further though. Just trying to take this as serious as one possibly can.
Keep after it! About a year ago I finished a race after the sweepers opened the course to general traffic with about 1.5 miles left and had the bike medic guy encouraging me to stop. Me from March 2019 (when I couldn’t run a full mile without stopping to walk) couldn’t imagine how much better I feel now (and lighter!) and how much progress can be made by sticking to it!

The more you do it, the endurance and pace gains will follow. The Star Wars races last year were part of my return to running after not really doing it in 10-15 years and I was definitely scared of getting swept, but I think most runners will tell you, it’s better to try and get swept than not to try at all. Disney is about the most supportive place to get into the hobby and, I don’t think they use the sweepers on the 5ks, so that’s a good place to start when you’re ready!

Thanks! I really enjoy these virtual 5K’s so I can train and run on my own terms. Also, the themes are SWEET! It makes me even more motivated to run to earn those medals.

When my challenge medals come I will know that I really earned it. I hope one day, maybe I get to do a race as part of the WDW Marathon or possibly Star Wars Rival Run as those themes appeal to me the most!

I’ll keep posting about training updates...I’m getting very close to my 16 mile avg pace after I hit it I’ll do a few more runs and then I’ll do the first 5K!

Good for you @Surferboy567 ! As @Demarke said, keep at it. I started running 5 years ago and the more consistently (and intelligently) you do it, the more endurance you will build and the speed will come as well. My pace has picked up over the years and what would have seemed impossible to sustain 5 years ago is now a normal “easy run” for me.

They don't sweep the 5ks, but if it's 2 hours and you're still running.....

Oh, I didn’t know that...I thought they did. Considering I’ve already done two in the about the 50 min-1hr range then I should be good. Still aiming for that 16 mil avg pace though in case I choose to graduate to the 10K.

So I did an experiment today, sped up the treadmill even further (.2 faster then yesterday to be exact)...very fast for me was extremely tired out and only made it 16:46 Mins but I did find something out.

That speed yields a 15:39 Avg Pace per Mile.

When I take a quick break I’m doing to do another 15 minute test on the treadmill and lower the speed by another .1

If I’m correct I should still be at my 16 Avg Pace per mile but it should be a lot more doable. If my thinking is correct...that is the speed I will use.

EDIT: Weirdly enough I went for another run out the treadmill this time lasting 15:36 .1 SLOWER and got a 15:27 Avg Pace. I guess I’ll have to be running around that speed.

Kinda strange putting the treadmill SLOWER makes the pace go up...but at least I have an idea of what to do.

I‘m probably going to do a gradual cool down toward the end. This way I can hit the pace but gradually give myself a rest.

Just finished my first virtual 5K Mad Tea Party! I plan to do one a month to keep myself looking forward to the next race. 2 more to go!

The entire time I watched Mad Tea Party and Alice in Wonderland attraction videos to match the theme. This included history videos, ride POV‘s, and soundtracks.

Did you know the ride at Disneyland features a goofy laugh?

Time: 49:29
Avg Pace: 15’44 (I did it!)
Distance: 3.14 mi

Anyone think we should just make one big dedicated thread for all RunDisney virtual races and try to get it pinned? Instead of having all these fragmented small threads pop up.

Virtual running I’d argue is just as important of an event when taken seriously. It could also be a nice thread to talk about all virtual running events.

This includes virtual 5K’s virtual half marathons and whatever Disney comes up with next. It could even be a place for people to share times and finisher certificates.

Thoughts on this? Would be more then willing to create if this gains enough traction. Or maybe someone more seasoned does it. Doesn’t really matter.

I think that makes sense, we could always retitle one of the existing ones too.

While we’re at it, I think it would make sense to replace a couple of pins for races that aren’t run anymore and pin the existing Star Wars and Paris running weekend threads up there

(Not that I have the power to do any of the above 😁)

I was thinking the same exact thing maybe we can get a mod or something to clean some of threads up.

Avengers
Tink
Disneyland

All these races don’t need to be pinned. Disneyland is the wild card unless that comes back...but everything else can probably not be pinned. As they don’t seem relevant anymore. Could be wrong though...

In this hypothetical thread though, should we lump all virtual events together...I would say yes. Since that would reduce the amount of threads being created. As well as keep all virtual runners in the same place. But then all virtual Star Wars talk would happen in the run Disney virtual run thread and not the Star Wars one.

Another thing, starting a new thread is probably better then a pre existing one. Since we don’t have the power to change the thread titles. It would also enable the thread to start fresh and be better organized.

Hyperlinks could be added whenever a new virtual race/series starts in the first post. This way no new threads have to be created.

Just a thought. My thoughts could be totally wrong but I think this is a good jumping off point.

EDIT: Oh and the thread tracking the runDisney miles should definitely be pinned.

I'm for keeping the SW Virtual half in the SW race thread as it's part of one of the challenges for the on property races.

The OP can change the title of the thread he/she created. We really don't use the SW thread @wdwmagic created a while back and we could ask Steve to close it.

That sounds like a great idea. It would reduce new thread creation to only one.

Then we should:

1.) Make a virtual RunDisney dedicated thread (for the 5K’s or other challenges that get released that are not linked to on property events).

2.) All virtual challenges linked to a on property event (like Star Wars) should stay in their respective threads.

3.) Change Star Wars Thread title

4.) Unpin some threads (Avengers, Tink, Disneyland)

5.) Pin some threads to replace them (Disneyland Paris, Newly named Star Wars thread, virtual running thread, as well as the RunDisney miles tracker).

How does this sound for everyone? I think it could make this a lot more organized and streamlined. Of course, though could be wrong.

We've been using the Rival Run thread @DznyGrlSD created. My recommendation is we continue to use that thread for all WDW SW races, whether on property or Virtual.

And pick one of the existing virtual threads for the summer 5Ks and the virtual 10K in the fall. Then ask the mods to lock the others.

Also encourage people with questions about existing races to use the existing threads, rather than creating a new one.

Just MHO. 😁

Cool, I’ll ask @DznyGrlSD to swap the name out. So it can be used for all Star Wars events including virtual. Maybe we can get a mod to pin it.

Let’s all decide on which thread to pick for our main RunDisney virtual thread.

Try to get the other relevant threads pinned.
